Lots of German and Czech immigrants came in that way. But from the east, they would probably have come by wagon. What happened that increased population was the end of the Texas Revolution for independence from Mexico in 1836, and then the decision of the Texans to become a state of the United States, in 1845. Before statehood, Moses Austin and his son Stephen led families in under Mexican approval to start settlements. These primarily came from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee (1820-1830).
