It seems to me that the South REALLY suffered after the War. My families were all farmers but after the war they could not pay the taxes and had to give up their land and move to the towns and cities. 99 percent of my family ended up working in the mills in Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL. I guess the other alternative would have been to move on west if they wanted to stay on the land.
