This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FR.2ADI/107 Message Board Post: Hi Everyone, Here is a wonderful source of information on slaveholders. Good Luck, Ramona http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ajac/ "LARGE SLAVEHOLDERS OF 1860 and AFRICAN AMERICAN SURNAME MATCHES FROM 1870 by Tom Blake, 2001 and 2002 Introduction. Published information giving names of slaveholders and numbers of slaves held is almost non-existent. It is possible to locate an ancestor on a U.S. census for 1860 or earlier and not realize thatancestor was also listed as a slaveholder on the slave schedules, because published indexes almost always do not include the slave census. The last U.S. census slave schedules were enumerated by County in 1860 and included 393,975 named persons holding 3,950,546 unnamed slaves, or an average of about ten slaves per holder. The actual number of slaveholders may be slightly lower because some large holders held slaves in more than one County and would have been counted in each County. Excluding slaves, the 1860 U.S. population was 27,167,529, with about 1 in 70 being a slaveholder. It is estimated by this transcriber that in 1860, slaveholders of 200 or more slaves, while constituting less than 1 % of the total number of U.S. slaveholders, or 1 out of 7,000 free persons, held 20-30% of the total number of slaves in the U.S. The process of publication of slaveholder names beginning with these largest holders will enable naming of the holders of the most slaves with the least amount of transcription work. Transcribed names. I have begun a process of transcribing names of some of the largest slaveholders and matching the surnames with numbers of African Americans on the 1870 census. I have compiled name lists that can be linked to through this page. The names on these lists are slaveholders who were some of the largest slaveholders in the listed County in 1860. The surname is only listed one time per County, even though in some cases, more than one large holder in the County had the same surname. For each County I have transcribed, you can find a report on slave holding statistics in 1860 with the full names of some of the largest slaveholders, and also information on African Americans on the 1870 census with the same surname as the holders. Surname matching of slaveholders with 1870 African Americans is intended merely as suggesting another possibility for further research by those seeking to make connections between slaves and holders. Updates. This list was last updated May 12, 2002. There are no current plans for further updates. There are currently 5,676 surname/County combinations on the large slaveholder lists, representing a total of 621,544 slaves in 121 Counties (Parishes in Louisiana) in 6 States. This total represents 47.32% (approximately one half) of the slaves that were held in these Counties, and 15.73% (approximately 1 out of every 6) slaves held in the United States in 1860. The Counties and Parishes 1 out of 3) of the slaves held in the United States in 1860, and almost one half of those were held by the slaveholders listed at this site. The Charleston County, South Carolina links below include 2,653 small slaveholders, holding 19,975 additional slaves, in addition to the 200 slaveholders who held 40 or ore slaves. These additional Charleston slaves have been included in the above slave calculations, but the additional 2,653 Charleston slaveholders have not been counted in the above figure forsurname/County combinations or total number of slaveholders. Hi Ramona and everyone No everything on Ancestry.com doesn't require that you be subscribed. I had used their articles/columns maps and census extraction forms before I ever subscribed to the Census Images. However to access the Slave Schedules at Ancestry you must be a subscriber to their Census Images online as I noted in my post. I was answering the question asked by another Southern Plantation subscriber on the list about how to get to the slave schedules. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. The article that I mentioned, UNRAVELLING THE 1850 & 1860 SLAVE SCHEDULES, is not at Ancestry and may be of use to anyone who is researching the slave schedules. I am not researching any slave names so far. My gr gr gr gr grandfather Peter Luna, who lived in Marshall Co. TN until his death in 1851 owned some slaves. I have a copy of his will but it doesn't mention them by name in the will. It might in court documents following his death. I've not had the opportunity to check. I have transcribed the 1850 & 1860 Slave Schedules of Van Buren Co. TN and have them online at the urls below (You will probably need to copy and paste into browser as they are long urls) 1850 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rmbeckman/census/TN/vanburen/slave1850.html 1860 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rmbeckman/census/TN/vanburen/slave1860.html Thanks, MarieB At 06:09 AM 9/1/02 -0400, you wrote: >Good Morning Marie and All, >Marie to do research on Ancestry.com one must be a paid member; isn't this >true? >On the list we should help one another freely. >So with that in mind the list is researching: >Bigelow >Bass >Ball >Malloy--SC. >I will write the slave researchers who post free info on other Slave lists >I admin or host and see what we can find on these surnames. >Marie what slave surnames are you researching? >Thank You, >Ramona > >------Original Message------ >On Sat Aug 31 21:02:06 2002 >rmbeck@bellsouth.net wrote: >If you are subscribed to the US Census Images online >The Slave Schedules for 1850 & 1860 Census are >available once you have selected State and County >You will have the option of Townships/Districts or >Slave Schedules if there is one available. >The Slaves gender and age range in census >records prior to 1850 were listed in the household which >they lived in. >There is a very interesting article >UNRAVELLING THE 1850 & 1860 SLAVE SCHEDULES-By Spencer McCall >http://www.webarchaeology.com/Html/slavschd.htm >Ancestry Census Images Online (US) >http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/usfedcen/main.htm >U.S. Federal Census Indexes >http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm >U.S. Federal Census Indexes - List of Databases >http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/censuslist.htm >Hope this helps >MarieB
Good Morning Marie and All, Marie to do research on Ancestry.com one must be a paid member; isn't this true? On the list we should help one another freely. So with that in mind the list is researching: Bigelow Bass Ball Malloy--SC. I will write the slave researchers who post free info on other Slave lists I admin or host and see what we can find on these surnames. Marie what slave surnames are you researching? Exactly what do you go to on ancestry.com to get slave schedules?
Marie, I did the "drill down" and found slave schedule info. I just never knew it was on the site. I went to search link below to index listings but can't find any Bigelows. I know this is incorrect because Roderick Bigelow is listed in the 1810 Warren County, NC census with 350 slaves which I have a copy of. I'll go through Warren County page by page - there's only 100 +/-. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marie Beckman <rmbeck@bellsouth.net> To: <SOUTHERN-PLANTATIONS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 1:33 PM Subject: Re: [Southern-Plantations] SLAVE SCHEDULES - NORTH CAROLINA, Craven, Warren, ... Thanks for your reply Denise, but I would like to have a hard copy of the 1870 census of South Carolina. I know the book exist because I saw it at the SC Archives and History. I have found ancestry.com very, very limited on any African American research. Sometimes you can get leads from their message boards. I have subscribed to the census and most of my people are listed in the census but when I put their names in ancestry.com, I get nothing. I still have to go to the library. I have received no new info from ancestry.com except the message boards.
I'm looking for Bigelow (Roderick Bigelow) owned 350 slaves in 1810 census in Warren County. He left estate to Thomas Bigelow aka Thomas Pattillo (Roderick's stepson) in 1819. Thomas Bigelow aka Pattillo lived in Warren and Caswell Counties. I do belong to Ancestry.com but I can't find any slave schedules - just slave narratives - I must be looking in the wrong place. (Slaves are Betsey Bigelow mother of Mulattos: 1. George Bigelow - 2.William Bigelow 3. Albert Bigelow, 4.Lewis Bigelow 5. Zachariah Bigelow 6. James Bigelow . 7. Elizabeth Bigelow, 8 Mary Bigelow 9. I don't know about the how or if the North Carolina Slave schedules are listed but the Tennessee Slave schedules for the yrs 1850 & 1860 are listed just as if you were going to look up the reg. census. Example of Tennessee 1850 U.S. Federal Census - Tennessee - White Please choose a Township: - Slave Schedules - Unknown Townships (AIS)Slave schedule index listings can be found at http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm With a list of what is indexed in the AIS index at http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/censuslist.htm Just checked on Warren Co. NC and it is listed the same as TN 1850 U.S. Federal Census North Carolina Warren Please choose a Township: Land Creek Division Slave Schedules Nutbush Warrenton You would just need to click on Slave Schedule. Not sure of where a NC Slave Schedule index may be.....I did notice that SC and TN are listed on AIS but didn't see NC. Prior to 1850 the slaves and free persons of color were listed on the census records in their own category with age range & gender http://www.ancestry.com/save/charts/census.htm Hope this helps --MarieB
