My sister over in the MO boot heel says they don't have hardly any bees either..>Even the carpenter bees...look like bumblers and drill holes in rafters, etc.. are missing...No honeybees, few bumblers......We are still getting mostly shriveling squash, as they aren't being pollinated.....We pick them as soon as they bloom....Bean blooms are falling off because of the heat OR not being pollinated.....Theres a clover patch at one end of the garden and we saw 5 or 6 honey bees there yesterday morning...all at one time.......Don't know why they couldn't fly a few yards further and pollinate our squash..I told hubby to tap the cornstalks gently to pollinate the silks...Each silk must be pollinated or you get skips in the corn cobs 'rows'....I also told him if a cornstalk shows no sign of an ear and is tasseling, we might just as well take it out...If an ear comes on later and the tassel has already shed all it's pollen...it's a lost cause...Am I right ? Theres a tall Abelia hedge in front of the house and plenty of insects are visiting it...but mostly bumble bee types, and those hummingbird moths, I think they're called...Look like a cross between a bumble bee and a humming bird......
