I learned to make baked apples in the cooking class in the 8th grade. I think I still have the recipe that we had to copy. I never make them any more, just never think about making them in the microwave. They would be good on a cold day though. Apples ! Apples! Apples! Back in October 1978 we were on our trip back to Georgia with our new 5th wheel. We were spending a few days with an aunt in Hartwell, Ga. She had given us at least two or more bushels of those special crispy and juicy North Georgia mountain apples, I don't know the name offhand. Well, we continued our trip and gave apples to other folks along the way back to California. We ran into a rainstorm near Van Horn, Texas. Found a park where we could get out of the weaather. It rained pretty hard through the night and next day. We became aquainted with the folks parked next to us. I showed the apples and I was afraid I would lose them at the Barstow, Ca. inspection station. I gave her quite a few of them. She suggested we peel and sliced and put them in lemon water in all my plastic containers and put them in the bathtub. She and her husband cane to help and we washed, peeled and sliced until the wee hours. We filled all my containers and bags. The rain had stopped and we were able to be on our way. Guess what? When we got to Barstow, Ca. the inspection station was closed.!!!!!!!! But my apples were all readt for pies, sauce, and whatever. What a funny story. When my husband and I went on a trip thru California, we came to the inspection station between Oregon and California. We had bought either apples or oranges (can't remember which) from a store so they weren't home grown. Of course we had to declare them at the station. We were told we couldn't bring them into the state. We had 4 or 5, we had planned to have them for snacks along the way. Of course we couldn't eat all of them right there so we had to throw them away. As we were pulling away, I told my husband those men just wanted some fresh produce to eat. Sure enough, I looked back and one of the men was digging them out of the waste basket.
