'Buzz' is a great little helper in the yard, and you usually only have to show him something one time and he has it....of course being a clever young man he notices what other folks do also....I was down in the garden using the hand held nippers to trim some bushes when I noticed him coming across the yard with Papas BIG pruners.....Whacking them into the ground every little bit didn't do much for the mossy grass OR the pruners, but I thought it was worth it to keep him busy till Papa could catch up to him...He walked up to the peach tree and before I could say 'Don't do it ! He had snipped off a low hanging limb..I watched in amazement and heard him say '' There. That's out of my way." Sure enough, he could now walk under it with all ease....THEN he wrestled the pruners into position and snipped off a rose branch ! Realizing that my beautiful climbing rose bush was about to become a ground cover I lunged up the hill just in time to stop him from cutting off a large gracefully arched rose cane......In spite of Buzz angrily explaining to me how that thing needed to be gotten out of his way I confiscated the pruners.....and returned them to Papa where they belonged....Then I went back to the garden and put the peach branch and rose cuttings with the apple tree limb Buzz severed the LAST time he got the pruners....Yep, that boy is a great help in the yard.....................................................Jeannie T
You reminded me of the time I pruned my mother's rose bushes, but I did it on purpose. She lived in southern California. I don't know know if she hadn't pruned them yet or didn't know how to prune the bushes to get the maximum affect. They were quite large and I had learned how to prune rose bushes to make them come back better. I was out there pruning her roses, cutting them close to the ground when she came outside and saw me. She told me I had better not have killed her rose bushes (she had some pretty ones) or I was in for it. I told her I knew what I was doing. I had pruned them down to about one foot above the ground. Sure enough they came back prettier and more bushier than before, no long branches to avoid. After I married, we bought the Encyclopaedia of Gardening and I devoured those books. That was one of our good investments.
