    3. In October 1965 one son was on his Navy ship off the coast of Viet Nam.His younger brother was in a terrible auto accident in Northen California, not expected to live. I called the Red Cross to ask if they could get in touch with the Navy brother. A very curt, nasty male voice said, "When he dies, call us back and we'll see what we can do! and slammed down the phone before I could say another word. The brother slowly recovered from the accident. When my boss told me they were going to deduct so much money from our paychecks to donate to the Red Cross, I let him have "it" and gave my notice, so did another gal in the office.I was planning to leave before the end of the year but this gave me a good opportunity to have my say on the matter of donations, etc. Belle Belle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce Ragels" <jragels@comcast.net> To: "ETM" <ETMaddox@verizon.net> Cc: <MEMORY-LANE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 8:32 AM Subject: Re: [ML] THE SUBJECT IS Relief organizations > Many are just big corporations that operate under different rules because they are charities. When most of the money received goes for administrative and operational costs, there is just something wrong with that picture. If they can't give away the majority of what they receive, I don't consider them a charity. Just for grins, try reading one of their financial sheets. > > I have the most respect for the Salvation Army and always give to them. > > The Red Cross is not what it should be. When my husband first joined the service, his pay got all messed up and he didn't get paid when he should. He came was a dirt poor family so had almost no money with him when he arrived. He went to the Red Cross, told them what happened, asked to borrow $20 until he got paid for toiletries. The not only told him no, but said they couldn't help him get any either. He was not the only American soldier who got screwed by the Red Cross. He swore that for as long as he lived, he would never give them not one red cent, and he didn't. Because of his experience, neither will I. > > J > > Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. - Marcel Proust > http://community.webshots.com/user/jragels > > > > The subject is > > > Relief organizations > > > > > > > > > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mbousman1/memory.htm > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MEMORY-LANE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
