Many, many years ago, I would pack the picnic basket with sandwichs, fruit, cookies, drinks, erc. and take my kids and sometimes aneighbor and her kids and head for the nearest park or the beach when we lived in California. In later years, I haven't been able to go and the parks and beachs have become too dangerously populated to even attempt a pleasant picnic. I go back to the time when we had "All Day Singing and "Dinner on the Ground" . A sort of picnic affair. People would gather at a small country church, all bring their tablecloths and food items. They would spread them out on the lawns and under the trees. All atteding were welcome to help themseles to anything that was offered. There was always plenty of items offered. Fried chicken, sliced ham, potato salads, cole slaw, pickles, breads, cookies, etc. Always gallons of tea and lemonade. I loved to wander through the area and pick out what appealed to me. No one ever went home hungry. It was agood time for all to catch up on all the news of the area since there were no phones.Births, deaths, marriages, etc and a good time for the young ones to meet and get aquainted. One didn't have to be concerned about the small children walking aroundamong the area. Part of the 'good old days'.
