    1. [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Vegetables are so expensive...
    2. I priced tomatoes at a little roadside produce stand today ..Tomatoes were $1.50 each! I must tell hubby to keep picking the little tommy toes in the garden...He's about given up on it...I don't think the prices ever did go down in the store...Making me wonder what they will be this coming winter...Brrrrrrr...HATE to think of it. I got sweet potatoes for 50 c a lb...not too bad except Tenn. produces a LOT of sweet potatoes and they are usually cheaper in the Fall..I saw some of those long necked, striped Cushaws for $3.00...[a temptation, but already bought a pie punkin to fry..].They are in the winter squash family, by the way, sometimes known as potato pumpkin...Sometimes solid white. VERY tasty cut in chunks and fried with brown sugar and lots of butter... Talked to my slightly younger brother last night...He lives in Aurora, IL , near Chicago. He said all kinds of black eyed peas Volunteered up in his garden this year, and so many tomatoes he had to hoe lots of them out. He left a long row, thinking they would all be the little 'tommy toes', but there were big red ones, black heirloom ones, yellow pear, etc. He has a big garden and cans and freezes food himself for the two of them ...Has always done that.[ Another brother now deceased canned food too...Unusual , I think .} He works , even though he is 72..drives a little delivery truck for car parts around Aurora. Retired, but it didn't stick...Got tired of golfing, can play the stock market after work, etc. Must be nice. He was such a pest growing up...wanted to fight all the time...Luckily we get along better now.... By the way, he said he wrapped the roots of a tomato volunteer and a hot pepper plant together and planted it in one hole to grow up together. He said that was supposed to make the tomato taste hot. It didn't taste hot as you ate it but then you tasted the heat..not really bad but good for someone who likes hot stuff. I'm sure hubby will want to try that next year. OUR volunteer tomatoes plus some we grew from seed died in the hot baking sun....He said Aurora had LOTS of rain...Just can't figure black eyed type peas volunteering ....even in the South....
