Several years ago, I had some cherry tomato plants in amongst my roses. There was a field behind me and the kids had a path that they walked all the time. One time I saw some boys eye my tomato plants. I went outside and told them, if they wanted some tomatoes, to ask me and a I would let them pick some to eat, but not to throw at each other. I let them take a handful each. LAter, they did come assk me if they could have some and I told them yes. I'm sure I averted losing a lot of tomatoes by talking to them.
