At the time I wrote about Daddy wrapping the apples up the two older boys slept across the dog trot hall in an unheated bedroom...In beds loaded down with Mama's handmade quilts..made it hard to turn over !Common back then..jail time now ! The baby slept with Mama and Daddy in the front room where the fireplace was located, and us 3 girls slept in a big bed in there too...Eventually there was 9 kids...4 boys and 5 girls... What did we eat on Christmas day ? That's an easy one..I remember seeing Mama sitting at that big homemade table all alone..NONE of us kids ate breakfast..just candy and fruit. We didn't have any special food except all the cakes and stuff we had readied in the last few days...Coconut cake made with the 'milk' poured on the layers and freshly grated coconut ...Chocolate cake with thick icing, fruit salad, boiled custard. etc. Oh yes, we ate GOOD on Christmas...Mama was such a good cook, and had a 'sweet tooth' too...
