If you don't use oil in baking what do you use? Don't tell me you use lard. I cooked with olive oil for a while. The taste is a little different but you get used to it. An Italian restaurant in town has oilive oil and spices (I think garlic bits) for your appetizer to dip your bread in. I'm not crazy about that but when I go there, I do dip my bread into the oil/spices. I wonder if you asked at a restaurant where you frequent often if they would save you some bacon grease if they would do it for you. It would be worth trying anyhow. Paula and Jen, I got my flu shot yesterday when I was volunteering at the hospital. That's one of the perks that we get! I thought my arm would be sore this morning, but it wasn't. I've always taken the flu shot and did take the h1n1 shot last year, with no side effects... I didn't let her continue the sniffing if I saw her, took markers away. Also talked to her parents about it. Kay In a message dated 10/11/10 21:32:05 Central Daylight Time, AZJen@npgcable.com writes: I realize there wasn't much you could do. However, would there have been any way you could have told the parents about what this child was doing & how it made her feel? That's so young to start in with something like that & it breaks my heart to think of a 5 yr old sniffing markers & saying that the smell made her feel good. That's one reason that children get into things at such an early age nowadays. That's one reason why I have second thoughts about young children being given marijuana for medicinal reasons. We have neighbors several streets north of us & they are always out gathering marijuana. They claim that they are gathering it for folks who need it. However, they both are heavy smokers & I have gotten so I won't go over to their home b/c their place always has so much smoke inside of it. I used to have a friend who I worked with..who had a son who claimed that marijuana was better for him than cigarettes. Mike had taken up smoking marijuana & claimed that he would live to be older & would be more healthy than his friends who smoked cigarettes. Marijuana may not injure your lungs like cigarettes do..but I do feel it's a catalyst which can get a person involved into different drugs. When I was teaching, I had many conferences with parents over things which their children did. Many times I would observe certain actions & would advise the parents of these actions. There was one little boy, when I was teaching 3rd grade, who was constantly going to the rest room & was always drinking so much water. I suspected diabetes & was glad that I talk to Jim's Mother about him b/c she took him to the doctor & he was diagnosed with diabetes. I can only hope that I was able to catch this problem before it became worse for this little boy. I still find it 'interesting' that his parents never noticed his behavior. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 6:32 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Flu shots > Talking about sniffing ??? Mama used to send us out in the yard to get a switch so she could give us a dose of 'peach tree tea!' You should a kept that old black pan...They get seasoned like an iron skillet over the years, and things brown on the bottom better cooked in them. If you use an old blackened pan under a bought pie crust it will cook the crust and it will be brown and homemade looking. Jeannie T., After I had been in & out of hospital for between 8-9 yrs, I was placed in a rehab hospital where I was suppose to be walking on a regular basis. However, they seldom had time for me. B/c of that, I now have flat feet & have to wear orthonics. I have had to get rid of all my shoes b/c all I can wear are Natural Balance Shoes or orthopedic shoes with the orthonics inside of them. As long as I'm fit well with a shoe, then I'm pretty good. I have a very narrow foot..or should I say heel. I think I have triple a triple a heel..plus, all my shoes have to be narrow. I cannot get away with a medium shoe. I just had my cortisone shot in my knee. I didn't expect it to help me & it didn't. I finally was given pain meds after I begged them to do something about the pain in my knee. They found out that my knee cap was fractured & due to many falls, my knee cap was nearly sheared off. I will probably need knee surgery. Cannot get into to see the surgeon unto 10/18. At least I now have some pain meds, so I cannot complain. I think when they realized how bad off I was, they figured they should give me something for pain. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 10:19 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Oh my aching feet ! /cortisone shots. > I got my flu shot at Kroger Pharmacy, but am still wondering if I should > have waited. Don't know if I mentioned it or not...but my rt knee had been hurting me a great deal lately. I ended up going to our orthopedic surgeon up here. I couldn't get in to see him, but I could get in to see his PA, James. I figured that James would be okay b/c the surgeon who I have seen before, for surgery, had told me when I broke my ankles that as far as he was concerned, whatever James would do, would be what he would do. Well, I told this man how much pain I was in & he really didn't seem to think much of it. He took an X-Ray of my knee & leg. Said there was a spur in the bones that attached to my knee. Then he said that my knee looked pretty messed up. ! He gave me a cortisone shot. He didn't even ask me if I wanted to shot...just took out the needle & jabbed it into my knee. When we left his office, he said to wait around 2 days & then the pain would subside. Well, after more than a week I was begging him for pain medication & he refused to give it to me...telling me that I hadn't waited long enough for the cortisone to help me. I got rather upset b/c the knee was hurting more each day. Finally he wrote up an order for me to have a MRI at our local hospital. The results came back that I had a fractured knee cap. Paul had gotten very upset with his office b/c they wouldn't do anything for me. I was awake for nearly a week due to the pain. After they got the results back in...the gal who is in charge of the office called & asked if I wanted to change my doctor to the surgeon rather than the PA. Paul talked to her & they got things pretty much straightened out...& I will be seeing Dr. Caulkins when he returns from ! his vacation on 10/18. I'm sure that there will be something said abo ut the treatment which I received. I have had many falls in the past few years & I wouldn't doubt for one minute that I haven't damaged my knee cap due to all the falls which I have experienced. What got me is that I was in so much pain & yet this fellow refused to prescribe any kind of pain medication for me. Now I really do have to get to work around here. Paul came in & went out. I heard him say good-bye & I haven't the slightest idea where he has gone to. Guess I better get ready to go & get a flu shot if that's what he wants to do. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Talking about sniffing ??? There was a 5 year old girl in my kindergarten class who loved sniffing markers. Said she liked the smell, made her feel good. I realize there wasn't much you could do. Paula, We have been getting them ever since they came out. B/c I have been sick off & on for so long, I didn't want to chance getting sick..b/c I wouldn't have the resistance to beat whatever I might get in my system. My sister just got over a bout with the flu. She said she was in bed for around 3 days & hadn't felt that bad since she was little. I can remember getting the flu when I was little. All I got was 7-Up & paregoric. I had to lay on my side..either right or left. Otherwise, I would get sick to my stomach. We will probably go down to Walgreen's & get one tomorrow some time. Seems like just about everyone in town is giving the flu shots this year. I remember last year when they wanted you to get those "questionable" shots..and I refused. Mainly b/c I wasn't about to have anyone order me to get a shot. I still feel that whole deal was a hoax & I'm glad that I didn't get the shot. We have been getting flu shots since they first came out. 8-9 yrs ago when I got so sick..they thought maybe it was due to the flu shots. Finally turned out to be aspiration pneumonia. When I would go to bed at night, I would end up sleeping sitting up. My food was coming up into my lungs. By the time I got to the doctor I usually was in pretty bad shape. I've lost track of how many times that the doctors told Paul that I wouldn't be alive the next day. Regarding the cortisone shot, that's what this PA said & I knew that they hadn't helped me in the past. After a week of constant pain, I finally told the PA that I simply couldn't take the pain any more. I spent nearly a week awake & crying. Paul finally called & asked why they wouldn't give me anything for pain & he was told that I should wait for the cortisone to take hold. Well, I waited for a bit over 1 week & I felt that was long enough. Yes, I'll be glad when the surgeon returns on 10/18. What scares me is that I may need surgery. I was also scheduled for back surgery down in the Valley & I haven't even gotten the tests done for that. I figure that I better be able to walk before my back is operated on. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 3:30 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Emma & Paula, P.S. > No flu shot for me. I got the razor strop. Guess that tells you how serious Mama thought my infraction was. <g> Emma > Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2010 15:24:06 +0000 > From: freckletoes@comcast.net > To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Biscuits/cluttered table/fly swatter > > I try to keep the table clear but it doesn't seem to ever get that way. To me, it's more "homey" to have a table with goodies and stuff on it....let's me know that someone actually lives here as opposed to just passin' through. MaKettle's table was always loaded so we ate at a make-shift counter that at one time had been a wall. There was always a fly swatter handy too at Gramma Ruth's. No one ever thought any thing about swattin' a fly and just flickin' it "where ever" - on the floor or out the door. sometimes one of the dogs would get it before Gramma did. And fly swatters were always useful for whappin' at kids' legs when they were being onery.....(uh,,,, don't try that now cuz it would be jail time fer shure!) > > paula in sw fla usa.....and that dang fly swatter could sting! > xoxoxo > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Roses" <roses4831@msn.com> > To: "southern-chat" <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 10:55:21 AM > Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Biscuits > > > My Mom used to keep certain things on the table at all times too, but, like you said, covered up with a small cloth to keep the flies away. Now, no one thinks of keeping anything on the table. Everything has to be put away in its place. > My niece in MS keeps her table set with placemats and napkins, ready for the next meal. Not at my house I don't. My poor table is always so piled high with stuff I'm doing good to keep my placemat clear so I can see it. > When you have that blackberry cobbler, be sure to let me know and I'll be there Johnny-on-the-spot. > Emma > > > Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2010 11:31:22 +0000 > > From: freckletoes@comcast.net > > To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com > > Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Biscuits > > > > Seems like those old memories are the best of all. I sure miss those days....everything made sense and if not I sure didn't know! Gramma always had a couple of biscuits and cornbread and cobbler or pie and sausage and bacon ..... on the table covered so the flies couldn't get at it. Just had to come in and peep under the tablecloth to find a goody. Dirty face, dirty feet, dirty hands....grab somethin' and run back out the door. No gettin' scrubbed down with alcohol for fear of some unknown virus or bacteria! > > > > paula in sw fla usa.....thinkin' about blackberry cobbler.... slurp slurp slobber > > xoxoxo > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I plan to get one. Should have gotten one the other day when I was at the doctor's office but I forgot to ask for one. I always get one and so far, haven't had the flu or a bad cold. I know that people have different opinions on them...I'm just curious b/c we haven't decided what to do yet. We were going to go today..but my knee is really hurting me. > >
