Sounds as though you'd had a lot of nice collectable's over the years. But we all reach the point we don't need any of the "stuff" we've accumulated. I just hope my family wants to hang onto a few items. Kay In a message dated 10/13/10 12:19:41 Central Daylight Time, AZJen@npgcable.com writes: One can never tell. I do want to polish up the coffee urn before we take it there though. I have a set of sterling silver deer. They belonged to my Grandparents & I have always loved them b/c they were always at their home when we would visit them. At Christmas time I used to put red ribbon around their necks. I'm sure they would buy them for the silver value...but the fact that they have so many memories attached to them would stop me from selling them. I have already sold all my sterling flatware b/c I never used it. Now of course, the price of silver has really gone up. We did get rid of quite a few coins & such. Paul wants to keep the few items which we have left. He has his Kennedy Half Dollar Set which he put together & I have my Eisenhower Dollar Set which I put together. At one time we were really interested in coins & used to save many sets. We also used to go metal detecting & found a lot of neat things. I really wish I could find the silver Mickey Mouse Ring that I found over in a school yard near where we used to live. I also found a Barber Dollar or Quarter. It was very old & when I found it, I thought I had found a button from a Civil War Uniform. Paul kept that with a bunch of coins which he has on display. We took many of our coins to be sold in a shop here in town & Sue, the owner, had a fellow who was working for her, & he was helping himself to the coins which we took in. I had found a 1944 Half Dollar over in a park where we used to live. I was so proud of that half dollar b/c that was the year I was born. I don't know if you know it or not..but when you find silver in the ground, it looks brand new. It doesn't tarnish..it's as silver as if you had put silver polish on it. We would go out in the early spring once it got nice out & we really got the exercise. The only thing against it was that I was using muscles in my legs which I wasn't use to & where I worked, I always used the stairs b/c we were on the second flood. We had an elevator..but I felt it was better exercise if I walked up & down the stairs during the day. Let me tell you, my legs really hurt after we had been out metal detecting!! We sold our 1 metal detectors to someone up here. We have a radio show called "Trades & Sales" & if you call in & offer something for sale, you usually can get a buyer for it. I felt I was asking a reasonable amount for the metal detectors. They were White Detectors & those are about the best you can get. The first caller offered us $80 & Paul said to take it. I really thought that was too cheap..but he said that as far as he was concerned it was a good price. Naturally, afterwards, we had at least 5 more calls & these people would have paid our price for them (I wanted $100 for them). All I can say is that we got plenty of use out of them & have many fond memories of our metal detecting. There are still a few items which I feel we are missing. However, Sue sold her business very quickly & one day when we stopped by, we were told by the new owners to remove our items immediately. She had a number of antique books of mine & they had all been moved next door & were literally stacked all over the place. There was no way I could locate what I had taken in, so I just let her keep them. She had been good to us. She had sold a number of items for us & never had charged us commission for having them in her shop. I still have quite a bit of very old Indian pottery & I wish I could find someone who would buy it. This is the real thing. A friend of my husbands had gone to different Indian Reservations & had bought quite a bit of pottery from the Indians. Technically, it's not legal to do this...so I guess except for the few items which we sold, we may be stuck with many items which we still have. I have a friend in the Valley who visited us some time ago & she was really interested in what we had. I just may end up giving some of it to Joanne b/c she seemed to really appreciate it so much. (I have a picture of the cabinet which we have some of this pottery store in..if I can, I'll try to send you a picture of the cabinet & what's inside it. We feel as though we will have to sell this piece of furniture if we go to move b/c it's so heavy & takes up so much room.) ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 9:33 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Emma & Paula, P.S./flu shot > Jen, going to the Road Show sounds like a lot of fun. Turned out it wasn't really a "Road Show" like it was advertised as...People were sitting around with brochures which they had filled out. I asked the woman next to me if I could read her brochure & didn't see where they came from. They were mainly interested in gold & silver. They mentioned other things..but I don't think they really wanted to give you what your item was worth. They said if you couldn't bring it in, then to take a picture of it & bring it in. They would put it on the Internet & see if someone was interested in it. The urn which I have was made in circa 1805. I have papers from where it was purchased; however, I bet they wouldn't give me what it was truly worth. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 9:33 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Emma & Paula, P.S./flu shot > Jen, going to the Road Show sounds like a lot of fun. Kay, I just wanted to go by the place & see what was going on. Turned out, they just called it a "Road Show". I was expecting to see people standing in line waiting to talk to people to find out how much their item was worth. We had to go all the way around the building & then there was no place to park. My knee has really been hurting me today & by the time I got up the stairs & into the building, my knee was really hurting. I asked one person where this group had come from? (The group was supposedly appraising items & buying them.) As it turned out no one really knew what was going on. >From what we could tell, the main thing that they were in was silver & gold. I have quite a bit of gold..but Paul wants me to keep it. We had already sold quite a bit of it before the price went up as high as it is right now. I figure I will wait until the prices settles back down. I think I told you that I had read where if you sold something worth over $600, you had to file a form with the government & pay taxes on it. Doesn't look like we can do too much without telling our government about all our moves. When we first moved up here, Paul bought a used vehicle & then wanted a newer one. We had quite a bit of silver & gold & he sold it all so he could buy a new car. I didn't argue with him b/c he really deserved a new car. I had my own car & I ceratinly couldn't begrudge him getting his own vehicle. I seldom drive mine..and he had been talking about selling my car. I'd just as soon keep both vehicles for the time being. Actually, I like his car better than I like mine. On well, only time will tell as far as what we plan on doing with it. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jen LaBonte" <AZJen@npgcable.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 10:19 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Emma & Paula, P.S./flu shot > One can never tell. Belle, Do you put BOTH 'nacho cheese as well as salsa sauce on the cornbread at the same time? We went out to eat at a new Mexican restaurant the other night. I'm not one who likes really spicy food. I had quesidillos (sp) with beef & cheese. I was surprised that they didn't provide the sour cream & guacamole (sp) with it. We have a number of Mexican restaurants here in our town & my husband really enjoys them. I would just as soon stay home & make my own Mexican food. ~Jen in Payson, AZ P.S. Have been watching TV off & on today. It's amazing that they got all 33 of those miners out of that mine alive in Chile. Of course, they don't know what kind of things they may experience afterwards. However, they had a great boss who really organized the job. My husband, Paul, was like that when he was in charge of jobs. They also had the President of Chile who was right near that mine the whole time that they were getting the men out. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Belle Shepherd" <belleshep@cox.net> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com>; <KYHeritageFolklore@yahoogroups.com>; <homespun@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 5:11 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Cornbread. > Have any of you tried your fresh baked cornbread with 'nacho cheese > sauce and salsa? No, but I love Mexican cornbread, where you add grated cheese and hot peppers in the middle of the cornbread batter. I like this a lot but seldom make it since it makes a large pan full and I can't eat that much by myself. Have any of you tried your fresh baked cornbread with 'nacho cheese sauce and salsa? I like the 'hot' flavor. Belle
My mother bought good quality shoes for us and made me wear corrective shoes all the way through high school Oh, how I hated those ugly things. Had fallen arches and never could tell the shoes made any difference or helped my feet in any way. But, maybe they would by worse if I hadn't worn the corrective shoes. Kay In a message dated 10/13/10 01:11:50 Central Daylight Time, AZJen@npgcable.com writes: Kay, I got my Buster Brown Shoes from a store that had that kind of machine. It was so neat to look through & see the bones of your feet. One good thing, my parents didn't buy me shoes which didn't fit me correctly. Nowadays, I guess shoes are throw-away items. We used to take our shoes to the shoemaker in town to have them repaired & that meant they would last longer. Nowadays, people just throw them in the garbage & buy another pair. Either that, or they go to a garage sale & buy shoes. If the shoes are for an adult, that's one thing. However, if I were buying them for a child, I would be careful. Children need to have shoes which fit them correctly. They don't have to be the most expensive shoes in the world, but they should fit & last for a while. (I too have wondered why they don't have those machines in shoe stores any more!!) ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 10:12 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Oh my aching feet ! /cortisone shots. > That machine looks great! > Remember back when we were kids and put our feet in the machine to > determine shoe size? Jen, going to the Road Show sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe item will turn out to be very valuable. I love watching the show and am amazed at the worth of some of the "found" items. Well, hope to get go & get it tomorrow some time. Don't know how many of you watch "The Road Show" but it is up in our town from today 10/12-10/16. I have some things which I might take over & see if I could get a buyer for them. I need to clean this coffee urn..it's Sheffield silver from England & is over 200 yrs old. I had 2 cans of Hagerty Silver Cleaner which exploded in my laundry room cabinet. So now I have to go out & get some silver cleaner to clean the urn if I take it over to "The Road Show". Paul says not to clean it up, but it really does look much better when it isn't tarnished. Being Sheffield Silver..the copper does show through..but it really is tarnished too & I feel that people would find it more attractive if it were not so tarnished. One can never tell. I wondered about that. I have had so many X-Rays in my life time that I'm sure you can see me radiating a mile away. I thought those machines were pretty good. When trying to fit a small child for shoes..they cannot always tell you whether or not something fits. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 9:39 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Oh my aching feet ! /cortisone shots. >I think THOSE machines of days gone by used X rays to determine if shoes > fit...Too many other X rays being given now, and they finally realized > all those x rays were harmful....JneT > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > On Tue, 12 Oct 2010 12:12:40 -0500 jkaywojack <jkaywojack@aol.com> > writes: >> That machine looks great! >> Remember back when we were kids and put our feet in the machine to >> determine shoe size? Jeannie T., My b-i-l in N.C. was having much the same trouble with the VA. He was able to work something out, so he was getting what he wanted from the pharmacy & wasn't paying as much as the VA wanted. I'm not sure if he was getting meds from both of them..but I know that by the time he ended up, he had enough pills for a whole month. I'll have to ask my s-i-l, Rose, next time I talk to her. I agree with you about how they run people through doctor's offices nowadays. This PA knew I was in pain & yet he refused to give me any relief. He was too busy to see me, but while my husband & I waited to see him, he stood out in the hall & flirted with the nurses. That's how busy he was!! He got kicked out of the nursing home b/c he was having an affair with one of the nurses over there & her husband found out about it & wasn't too happy. So, no one could see me when I was in the nursing home after I broke my ankles. They wouldn't let, James, the PA, in the door. You probably have more problems with your feet than I do. If I shop around I can find place that specializes in narrow shows with narrow heels. I have a whole bag of shoes sitting in the garage that I'm going to give away to someone who can use them. I cannot wear them any more b/c my feet are flat from lack of rehab. I was bedridden for over 2 months & I was suppose to have someone helping me walk each day. I was lucky if I got someone to get me up & walk with me 1-2 times a week. Makes me angry to think that I really didn't have to have these problems...but I have them now & I have to live with them. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 9:48 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Oh my aching feet ! /cortisone shots. > Son has trouble with the VA giving him enough pain meds to last his a > month. Kay, I got my Buster Brown Shoes from a store that had that kind of machine. Glad you specified that, Paula!! When we came home tonight we had a skunk in back of our house again. I was surprised that Paul smelled it before I did. My first thought was that our dogs were lose in the house & they could come & go out of their doggy door. At least they hadn't picked up on the skunk & were just as good as could be when we got in the house. They both got sprayed in the face some time ago. Poor Cricket was really hurting...I felt sorry for her. Now that's an instance where she shouldn't have smelled something!!! MaryClyde, We went out to a new Mexican Restaurant tonight & afterwards we went by Wal-Mart to return something. I told Paul that we should then stop at Walgreen's & get our flu shots. I had totally forgotten that he wasn't carrying our medical information on him, so neither of us could get our shot. I'm watching them bring the men out of the mine shaft in Chile. So far they have done very well. Am praying that the rest will get out without any problems. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "MaryClyde" <maryclyde@comporium.net> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 9:03 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Emma & Paula, P.S./flu shot > Paula and Jen, I got my flu shot yesterday when I was volunteering at the > hospital. When we left >>> his >>> office, he said to wait around 2 days & then the pain would subside. >>> Well, >>> after more than a week I was begging him for pain medication & he >>> refused >>> to give it to me...telling me that I hadn't waited long enough for the >>> cortisone to help me. I got rather upset b/c the knee was hurting more >>> each day. Finally he wrote up an order for me to have a MRI at our local >>> hospital. The results came back that I had a fractured knee cap. Paul >>> had >>> gotten very upset with his office b/c they wouldn't do anything for me. >>> I >>> was awake for nearly a week due to the pain. After they got the results >>> back in...the gal who is in charge of the office called & asked if I >>> wanted to change my doctor to the surgeon rather than the PA. Paul >>> talked >>> to her & they got things pretty much straightened out...& I will be >>> seeing >>> Dr. Caulkins when he returns from ! >>> his vacation on 10/18. I'm sure that there will be something said abo >>> ut the treatment which I received. I have had many falls in the past few >>> years & I wouldn't doubt for one minute that I haven't damaged my knee >>> cap >>> due to all the falls which I have experienced. What got me is that I was >>> in so much pain & yet this fellow refused to prescribe any kind of pain >>> medication for me. Now I really do have to get to work around here. Paul >>> came in & went out. I heard him say good-bye & I haven't the slightest >>> idea where he has gone to. Guess I better get ready to go & get a flu >>> shot >>> if that's what he wants to do. >>> >>> ------------------------------- >>> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >>> SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without >>> the >>> quotes in the subject and the body of the message >>> >>> ------------------------------- >>> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >>> SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without >>> the >>> quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without >> the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > SOUTHERN-CHAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Also talked to her parents about it. Kay
Olive oil is a little strong, but a small amount of butter cuts the strong olive oil flavor. Adding herbs and spices, especially garlic makes it reaaalllly good. But I agree, nothing is better that veggies seasoned with bacon grease. With all the cholesterol problems, not many people choose to use animal fat for seasoning any more. I cooked with olive oil for a while. The taste is a little different but you get used to it. An Italian restaurant in town has oilive oil and spices (I think garlic bits) for your appetizer to dip your bread in. I'm not crazy about that but when I go there, I do dip my bread into the oil/spices.
