I was just going to post and ask for some prices around the list. I see things edging up day by day. Gas here in SW Florida is $3.00 / gal for regular. Found a bargain at WallyWorld on 4 cans green beans/$2.00. Also same for Campbells Tomato soup and Chicken Noodle. That was a sale though. There are no canned goods here less than $1.00/can (or very close to that) and most are $1.25 and up. No better prices at Save-a-Lot or Big Lots either. Have to go out for deli meat today and will record some of the prices. Just read a good article then saw program on history channel - to be prepared for power failures. We may just be getting warned in a subtle way. If the price of gas keeps going up that means diesel fuel will go up. Diesel fuel goes up that means the price of moving food will go up. Price of moving food goes up then the price of food will go up. FedEx (hubby's work - so far) has all ready put in a rate increase and I'm sure they are not the only ones. paula in windy, warm, (but not for long) sunny sw fla usa xoxoxo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ladonna Pipkin" <fromtheghetto@rocketmail.com> To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2010 10:05:20 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] PRICE ALERT SHOPPERS IN TISHOMINGO, 0KLAHOMA THE PRICE OF CHERRIES $8.99 PER LB. 3. Ladonna, Honestly, I wouldn't know..are those good or bad prices. My husband does all the grocery shopping & I know lately that he has been saying how the prices are going up. He noticed it quite some time ago at Wal-Mart & mentioned it to one of the managers & he/she denied it. Well, I guess now they are not even denying it any more...mainly, b/c all the prices are going up all over the place. We probably noticed it more than most b/c we are on a fixed income & only have just so much money to spend on groceries. I guess those who are receiving a daily paycheck are willing to pay the shelf price. I hope that others have started to put aside groceries. We have done quite a bit...but I think we need to do more. I also want to make sure that we buy some walkie talkies. We are located in such a remote area of AZ...if something should happen where we live, we would be sunk. Our Tea Party has already organized themselves with those in the group who are ham radio operators. However, I cannot see how using a ham radio can help us b/c we don't have one. We have friends who have walkie talkies & they are able to talk to one another throughout our town. When we originally talked about this, the walkie talkies were not that expensive..maybe $45-$50 for a pair. However, no telling if the price has gone up on them. ~Jen in Payson, AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ladonna Pipkin" <fromtheghetto@rocketmail.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2010 7:05 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] PRICE ALERT SHOPPERS IN TISHOMINGO, 0KLAHOMA THE PRICE OF CHERRIES $8.99 PER LB. We haven't done anything with our house yet. Mainly b/c my husband had some more problems & then I had my knee replaced. We figured that we are going to shoot for the beginning of March. That's when most people start coming up here to the mountains. We have also been told that there is going to be another AZ University built up here..so there may be people up here looking for homes. Take care & don't be a stranger. It's always a pleasure to hear from you. 2. Thought y'all might enjoy this article...author unknown,....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down there. With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said, 'Class is over, I would like to share with all of you, a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important. Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is GOD's way of telling us that we must make the most out of every single day. Her eyes, beginning to water, she went on, 'So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn't have to be something you see, it could be a scent, perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone's house, or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground. Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound trite to some, these things are the "stuff" of life. The little things we are put here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted.' The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester. Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we all overlook. Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Go barefoot. Or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off on the way home tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn't do. ____________________________________________________________ Globe Life Insurance $1* Buys $50,000 Life Insurance. 3. That's very true, Jeannie T. Believe it or not, I had a teacher in High School which said much the same things. I went to a private boarding school, so we were limited on what we did & where we went. It wasn't until my senior year did I really get a chance to spend much time off campus. That's when I realize how much fun it was to be out & about on my own. ~Jen ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <SOUTHERN-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 9:01 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] The world around us.... > Thought y'all might enjoy this article...author unknown,....Jeannie T > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > "I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband > died suddenly of a heart attack. 3. That's a shame. We did end up cutting a very large maple tree on our property back in IL, but there were more reasons for doing it than to avoid raking leaves. We had many leaves in our yard & we always raked them in the fall. The only bad thing was that we couldn't burn them b/c people complained they had asthma, etc. We used most of ours for compost. The ones which we knew had a lot of acidity in them, we bagged them with bags which we bought from the city & they picked them up along with our other things which we could recycle. We saved when we recycled...mainly b/c we had a big compost pile & put much garbage in there. Heading toward bed...Paul I know is getting anxious for me to call it a night. ~Jen ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 03, 2010 10:24 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] We're kinda squirrely... > My computer was down 2 nights running so I'm a bit late answering my > mail....Loved reading about your trees and their denizens...Sister Reba > got me interested in trees, and I still am a tree watcher even though she > passed away a couple years ago.....Trees are like husbands...can't live > with em, and can't do without them. 3. Jeannie T. We have a beautiful maple tree on our neighbor's property..right along our driveway. Paul was going to have this one fellow come over & clean up the yard b/c he has been so busy doing everything else. I told him to wait until the tree dropped its leaves. So far we have been waiting for over a month & that dang tree just sits there. Too bad we are not strong enough, or we would go over & shake the leaves off the tree...only thing, it's a pretty good sized tree. Our neighbors are gone for the winter. They have another home in Phoenix & go down there once it gets cold up here. So it's up to us to get rid of all the leaves from their tree which fall all over our property. They also have a few others which contribute to the mess in our yard as well. When we lived in IL, we had big pine trees which grew up & down our driveway. We had many cardinals which nested in them & it was always so much fun to watch them coming & going with food, etc. Naturally, we had feeders in front & back of our house. My Mother gave us a feeder that if a squirrel would get on it, it would flip the squirrel off b/c of its weight. My husband even built feeders which attached to our windows in our family room & we could see the cardinals when they came to get their feed. They liked sunflower seeds the best. I have to admit, the following spring, all my gardens under those windows were a complete mess. I told Paul that as far as I was concerned, we need not do that again. It was fun watching the cardinals up close though. We also had a big maple behind our house & it was right over our house. When you came out on the back porch, if anything was up in that tree it would start to carry on. We had a squirrel build a nest up there & Paul was always afraid that one of us would startle it coming out of the back door & it would jump down on top of us. We tried moth balls up in the tree & that worked for a little while; however, the squirrel kept coming back. The tree was also a very messy tree & it dropped sap on the sidewalk that we used to walk up to our back porch. We would have company on Friday...Paul's friends would come over for a poker game & they would park their cars in back of our house. By the time they got back in their cars, they could barely see through the windshield b/c of all the sap that dropped on it. We finally had the tree taken down to the tune of around $900. It was a wonderful shade tree..but there were many other things about it that we were not pleased with. The previously owners had let their children plant their trees any where they wanted when they brought them home from school after celebrating Arbor Day. That maple tree, if lightning had ever hit it, it would have fallen straight on our home. The previous owner came back & the first thing she noticed was that the tree was gone. I think that Paul told her that it had gotten hit by lightning & we had to take it down. We took down so many trees in that yard. I guess the Mother didn't care where the kids planted them. One good thing, they planted the pine trees in groups & this is usually done up in WI., so if you lose a tree, you still have some left. Out back we had a cluster of around 4-5 pine trees & we planted all sorts of interesting things under those trees. I really enjoyed my Wild Ginger & my Jack in The Pulpit. If I still have it, I have some information regarding fried squirrel. A friend of mine outside of Payson is quite into CA news, etc. & he sent me this. He told me not to turn up my nose until I saw the picture (of the plate). If I have it, I'll forward it to you. ~Jen in Payson, AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <SOUTHERN-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 2010 11:34 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] We're kinda squirrely... >I have no curtains on my front bedroom windows, just a screen of assorted > cobalt blue bottles..Nobody can see in , but I can look out and enjoy the > huge Maple tree between our house and the street....I can lie in bed when > I wake up each morning and watch the beautiful red cardinals and other > feathered friends flit around in the dark green streamers of ivy that > clothes the entire trunk of the tree...This morning I was lying there > drowsily planning my day and I saw a blur of movement as two gray > squirrels had a little wrassling match on a high limb....I saw a squirrel > taking some nesting material into the ivy awhile back , but haven't > spotted the nest yet...Tall trees around the yard and woods edge are well > populated with the leafy 'nests' but am guessing our resident joker is > building his nest a lot closer to the ground. > > I blame my niece, Little Jeannie, for our prolific squirrel population, > as I encouraged her years ago to release her pet squirrel over here when > it got old enough to fend for itself. 3. Jeannie T., I am trying to take each day as it comes. I have told the therapist that I had broken both my ankles a short time ago & also, I had back surgery & may be having more when I am done learning how to walk with my "new" knee. It aches a lot & I just hope that the doctor won't cut me off pain meds. I try not to take them too often...but sometimes I wake up at night in so much pain. I doubt if you will experience what I am experiencing right now. You have Buzz to keep you young. I have 2 little West Highland White Terriers...& they are getting old just like Paul & myself. Otherwise, we don't have a young person around to keep us going. ~Jen ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 27, 2010 10:30 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Jen's back ! > Glad your fingers are still working ! 3. Those McDonald Playlands are really something else. Usually (when we were still going to McDonalds) we would make it a point to sit as far away from the play area as possible. The kids really love playing there & as long as they aren't in my lap or table, I can sit by & watch with a smile on my face. You really can see some real unusual goings on with parents & children. (We don't go to local McDonald's any more...b/c most of them up here & in the area are franchises run by the same man. The majority of his help are illegal aliens. They hauled out 10 illegals out of our local McDonald's about a month ago. Also hit Del Taco & one illegal alien had 8 Social Security Numbers which were all stolen.) ~Jen ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <SOUTHERN-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 27, 2010 11:17 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Bye, Buzz.... > Say what ? 3. My sister hit a neighbor boy in the face with a rubber arrow as he was walking through the alley next to our house. Raymond (the guy she hit) grabbed her & put her over his knee & gave her a spanking. Well, per my "perfect" sister..no one was suppose to spank her & boy did she scream her head off!! If it had been me, then she would have laughed at me & said it was too bad & I was stupid..or something like that. Thankfully, my parents told Raymond he was right in spanking her & that even made her scream louder. That's just one of maybe 3 times that she got spanked. She was always "Miss Perfect". She would stand next to her Grandmother with her big bow in her hair & would always have this angelic smile on her face. She was a real phony & it's too bad that no one ever told me that they thought she was just that while we were growing up. I always thought I was the one who caused the problems...but my sister was in there making sure that I looked bad & she always looked good. Even my husband said after he met my sister, that he thought she was a phony. It's too bad that others didn't have the gumption to say that.
