I bought two rosebushes today...and hope for the best....The top growth is entirely different so hope it doesn't turn out like the last time I bought cheap roses...All of them are the same color! I happily shopped through a brand new shipment of roses that time , picking out a white climber, a red Blaze climber, a couple of bush roses...ALL turned out to be a rather odd pinky flower.....NO climbers....One of the roses I got today purports to be a Mr Lincoln ...favorite rose of my two deceased sisters....The other is an antique rose...don't remember the name now....All rose are beautiful, so I won't complain too much if they are mis named....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.... Stella, I can't believe you've remembered that story. Somewhere along the way, I learned how to prune rose bushes, a lot of it by trial and error. If someone wants to plant a beautiful rose, plant "Double Delight". It starts out red with white unfolding inside, but it could fold out to all red, all on the same bush. It smells like a rose should too. Yeah, it has thorns but sometimes they're worth it. It is a hybrid tea rose. Go to google and type in it's name so get a lot of hits to see what it's like. I think it's beautiful.Emma > From: busmar1852@webtv.net > Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 12:06:24 -0600 > To: Southern-chat@rootsweb.com > Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Spring Flowers > EMMA....I always think of you when it comes to rose > pruning.I recall your tale of cutting your Mother's rose bush so close > she thought you had killed it, but it came out with a bang! Hi everybody! I enjoy, so much reading your posts on the bulbs, other yard work etc. I too, have wonderful memories of the flower gardens of my past. I am unable to do it now...I have to face that fact, this year. But I am now looking for someone to pay,to clean out from winter, put fresh soil and mulch flower beds. EMMA....I always think of you when it comes to rose pruning.I recall your tale of cutting your Mother's rose bush so close she thought you had killed it, but it came out with a bang! I think I will do these four big pink antique roses that way this year. They are straggly (Is that a word?) Probably misspelled. The gardeners (lawn people) cut then back in December last year...causing a lot of dead growth this year...they look really bad.Too tall in places...too bare in others...I am gonna risk it and cut about 8 inches from ground. Sounds like your parents surely did have a pretty homeplace !We've planted everything on this property except a pear tree, an Abelia hedge and a forsythia bush..oh yes, a Blaze rose out back.....The place we owned before this was a case for the landlay...The woman asked for 1 month to move so we rented an apartment...During this month not only did Earline dig up all the plants and move them but she took the rocks from the flower bed and I don't know what all ! Hyacinth bulbs are notoriously short lived ...but someone forgot to tell these from Ma's house! The pink ones have been steadily multiplying...slowly, but steadily, but this year only half came up...I think I'll start digging on the bare side and very carefully dig up to the bulbs and see if I can find out anything....As far as I know theres no more hyacinths or tiny sweet smelling jonquils growing at Ma's home place....LOTS of daffodils, etc....It's one of my favorite "Memory " flowers...along with Uncle Louis's purple hyacinths...Then I love Miss Mariney's Peony...Brother Robert's Yellow Rose of Texas that he dug up for me...Oh yeah..It's a walk down Memory lane when I go walkabout in the yard....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sun, 20 Feb 2011 16:55:03 -0800 "Jen LaBonte" <AZJen@npgcable.com> writes: > Jeannie T., > > I always thought that bulbs had to be dug up every few years & replanted. > I know I really nurtured hyacinth plants...guess they would be a bulb too. I got so upset with my mother's landlady when I went down to pack Mama's things up to move her back to Arkansas. I had taken my 2 week vacation and had packed the things she wanted to take with her, had a moving sale, cleaned her house for leaving it, and literally wore myself out. We had moved to that house in 1942 and here Mama was leaving in 1973. There were two fig trees at the back of the yard and a persimmon tree just outside the bedroom window. It was a one br house on a 55' x 300' lot. Mom and Dad had planted lots of flowers around the yard, had planted fruit trees. They had chickens at the back of the property with a large garden between the chicken pen and the yard. The last night we were there, we stayed overnight at my SIL's house, she would later put Mama on the plane. Before I left to head back to Oregon, I told Mama, let's go back to the house and just walk around it. We were walking around the yard, just reminiscing, when here came the landlady and walked with us. This was my time with my Mama, I didn't want someone else intruding. Mama said later that the landlady probably thought I was going to dig up a bunch of the flowers to take home with me and she wanted the yard left nice to rent the house out again. Technically everything that was planted on the property had to be left there, but Mom and Dad had planted everything that was there for her to have a nice yard to show. I had already gotten some starts of some of her flowers. She had gorgeous irises that I got a start from. When I've gone back to Bakersfield, I've driven by the house. It didn't stay the same for very long.Emma > To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com > Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2011 23:29:40 -0600 > From: askgranny@juno.com > Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Spring's about to get 'ice winders'..... > ....LOTS of daffodils, etc....It's one of my favorite "Memory " > flowers...along with Uncle Louis's purple hyacinths...Then I love Miss > Mariney's Peony...Brother Robert's Yellow Rose of Texas that he dug up > for me...Oh yeah..It's a walk down Memory lane when I go walkabout in the > yard....Jeannie T > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jeannie T., I always thought that bulbs had to be dug up every few years & replanted. We used to do that with the tulip bulbs we had along our sidewalk in front of our house. Think we did that with iris bulbs as well. The iris we would have to divide or split. We would share those with friends. Same with all the hosta or plantin lilly plants we had around our place. I know I really nurtured hyacinth plants...guess they would be a bulb too. I loved the smell of them so much!! For some reason, they didn't do much for me. I know that my Mother always had them planted out in front of her home & she had no problems with them. We kept getting up grape hyacinth plants in our flower beds in back. I guess the woman that lived there previously liked that flower. No matter how many times I pulled them up, they still continued to come back the following year. I can remember planting snow flowers under our pine trees out in front & they always came up every year..they always told me that spring was on its way!! The people who bought our home tore up all my flowers & plants. Made me sad. However, they wanted the entire yard for their children. We saw the home they came from & they had absolutely NO yard!! The kids must be grown now & are out of the phase of camping out, etc. My sister sent me pictures of the front of their home. They had it professionally landscaped & it looked very nice. We were limited on our funds when it came to landscaping, etc. We would usually go out to the nursery & buy $100 worth of flowers in the spring. Then after Paul had those planted, I would find a plant or 2 on the back porch when I got home from work. I finally had to tell my Mother that we had no more room for plants...but she knew better b/c we had 3/4 of an acre. Since we have moved up here..I guess one would call it the "high dessert"..we have planted mainly perennials...and those which could go without a lot of water. We have beautiful Tx Sage along one side of our home. On the other side, we have butterfly bushes & they really do bring in the butterflies. (My husband has done all the planting...b/c of the steep grade, I'm afraid that I will fall trying to put plants in.) I guess what we do is called Zeroscape.(sp) ~Jen in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: <askgranny@juno.com> To: <SOUTHERN-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2011 11:10 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Spring's about to get 'ice winders'..... > Old timey buttercups are blooming here and there in the flower beds, and > some hybrid daffodils out front.......We're expecting a wave of cold air > tonight , so put extra leaves on the pink hyacinth that is a descendent > of some planted by Mamas sister that died in 1930.....Yes, I know > hyacinths don't live very many years........Shhhhh ! I just went to my spam folder & found where Stella was blacklisted. I haven't the slightest idea why or when that happened..but I now have her accepting mail from me. Had this out the other day regarding a friend in Phoenix. Of course my ISP said that this person was to blame & I said that if anyone was to blame it was "yours truly". I told him that the e-mails which I received from this friend were extremely important & I wanted her accepted again. The fellow, Ryan, said he "fixed" it for me. I guess he went into my spam folder..which he shouldn't have to begin with. However, I wanted the problem taken care of & he obliged me by doing just that. I checked it out today along with Stella & they are both "whitelisted" again in my spam folder. Please let me know if I'm blacklisting anyone. I will take care of it a/s/a/p!! ~Jen P.S. I always find it amusing when I type in the word "spam" & then do a word check on my message. Even today, "Spam" is capitalized...we have a few cans around here...just in case we need them in an emergency. Old timey buttercups are blooming here and there in the flower beds, and some hybrid daffodils out front.......We're expecting a wave of cold air tonight , so put extra leaves on the pink hyacinth that is a descendent of some planted by Mamas sister that died in 1930.....Yes, I know hyacinths don't live very many years........Shhhhh ! Glad you reported in, Eleanor. I agree with Stella, these two lists have been awfully quiet for a long while. I guess everyone is coping with the weather in their area. The paper said we could get thunderstorms this afternoon, we'll see. It's sunny outside now.I haven't been doing anything except watch videos/TV or talk/read the computer. I get so many political emails it's hard to keep up with them all so finally I end up deleting them. I need to drop a few of them.I keep telling myself I need to get all my receipts ready for income taxes but I keep putting it off. I needed a box to put last years receipts in so I found a box that had 2007 receipts in them. I had a shredding good time getting them shredded up to throw out. I have a small patio that I could have potted plants on but there's no water supply out there and I'm not carrying water from the kitchen, so, no plants.l I miss not having a garden altho it's been several years now since I had any plants.Take care everyone,Emma Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2011 11:38:59 -0500 Subject: Re: Hello From: ellorh@gmail.com To: busmar1852@webtv.net Hello everyone, I am still here. Emma...we never did anything but pour the hot bacon grease all over the lettuce and stir around. Didn't ever mix anything in. (We made salads of course, but not with this) The fried meat was on the side to eat with the bread. Stella
If you make a salad 'dressing' like I do , it will remind you of wilted lettuce, and is low cal too. Mix water, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper, and pour over your salad....NO oil. Just mix and taste till you get it right. I usually use half and half on the water/vinegar, then add sugar, etc. to taste. My memories took me back in time to the days when Mama made big bowls of wilted lettuce for my hard working Daddy..He LOVED it ! When he burned off the plant bed where he set out the scraggly sweet potatoes to make plants, he always burned off enough extra space so Mama could have a lettuce bed...She also planted lovely red radishes and spring onions....I'm sure Daddy kept a close eye on those little green sprouts, hungering for something green on the table to go with all those beans Mama cooked in that big black dinner kittle... One day he would come to the house smiling, toting a watering bucket just full of leafy lettuce and other things picked in the plant bed. Those greens had grown super fast in the rich black soil, and even the tender leaves of the radishes could be used, and there would be a bit of tender mustard greens...It didn't take long for Mama to fry up some bacon while Daddy was out by the well house washing up the greens....The bacon was put on the side after it was crumbled , and a bit of water was poured into the hot grease...We little'uns were warned away from the cabinet as Mama poured that hot grease all over that big panful of torn up greens...We didn't like it as well as Daddy did, but I'm sure each one ate their share. I make what I call ' Sissy ' wilted lettuce....Fry up some bacon and crumble when it cools..I pour most of the fat in the 'grease jar for later use, then mix in water, flour, salt and pepper and stir till it cooks thick. This is poured on the chopped lettuce, stirred in...and eaten fast....Not quite the same as my memories maybe, but MUCH better health wise..Since we don't have a plant bed I harvest my leafy lettuce at the local supermarket....Jeannie T ____________________________________________________________ When Banks Compete, You Win! Paula, my reasoning for my statement about a person's income......these houses are in some beautiful local... and on some choice lot, culdasac, or ocean front....and furnished by the biggest designers, etc. It was just a thought, that they couldn't afford anything with a negative outcome.Probably lots of rules.like certain people who won it, might not want to live there at all...and sell it to just anybody, for the money.....I feel that it is subject to not selling to anybody to get money...etc...I just think you would have to have income at least 150.000. maybe more...because sometimes it is a gated community...expensive looking to live. What we used to call the 'Country Club" set, when I was growing up.Makes me sad, there too....whatever happened to that group? I know, it went, like the middle class did...but that is a whole other story. I hope I can find time for some cooking today, since we are supposed to get some sun tomorrow.
