Let us know when that baby arrives. What's going on with me? Well, I need to lose weight (what else is new?). I'm glad warmer weather is arriving in our area of Kentucky because I do get more exercise when it's warm. Normally, we heat only three rooms of our house in the winter--kitchen, bedroom, hubby's office. So the work I'd do in the other rooms is neglected because it's cccccold in there. But I've been getting away from the computer more, with the warm weather, and working. Also, I'm already working in the yard. Sitting all the time isn't good for me, I know, but that's mostly what I do in the winter because I work at the computer. Anyway, I hope everyone is well and warm and has a great Sunday. Hi all, Many countries make quality merchandise and you don't have to be concerned about it. But we are all aware of the pure junk and dangerous items that China has throen at us. The only way to stop it is to close the market for it by NOT buying any of it. A few months ago I received as a gift a pretty housecoat. It was made in China. The front was ok but the back was what rhey call a "cheap cut." A straight cut panel ftom neckline to hem( avery narrow hen, less than half inch. The pockets in the side seams endedup on my backside and the front fasteners were bunched in a facing barely as wide as the snaps. It was in the$40 price range. Maybe some gal with no hips will someday pick it up at the Goodwill store, maybe a Chinese ? It is up to each of us to do our part in ridding the country of some of its problems that we have helped create by being apathetic and ignoring what was happening in our own front yards. Tome fell because of 'apathy.' Are we going to let the country fall apart? To all, Ithink we should avoid buying anything made in a foriegn country regardless of the need and cost. Every lost sale, enough of them will get the message through the blockhead store managers. No sales, no reorder, no incoming shipment from a foriegn country. When they realize that the unwanted goods is not selling, only taking up shelf and counter space that should be used for American made products. We need to have more "don't buy gas days." Wonder what the Saudis would do with all that oily sand should the glut hit the market and sales were cut back considerably? We all need to dowhat wecan, though it be in asnall way, to get this country back on its feet. Refusing to buy foriegn goods is a start. Driving less is another way. If each person across the country who drives would cut back on his gas purchases for one day, can you imagine how much less the country would have to buy from other coubtrys? Amazing how things add up. We no longer buy any part of those $10,000.00 cows or $5,000.00 pigs. We get along just fine without them. The chicken and fish aren't too out of reach, yet! I saw this price rise in items imported from China for myself today....As I watched a nearby stocker put some cute little notebooks on the shelf I noticed the ones she was putting out were marked $1.00 and the ones right by it..same thing, different picture on the front..were marked 88 c ... I asked if it was a mistake and she said 'no...the cheaper ones were from the last shipment!' Imagine, if there was that much jump in price for a little notebook, what are we facing ? Folks have been complaining about buying stuff made in another country...looks like it's gonna take care of itself....If China starts charging as much as USA made items we can go back to supporting our own country...They've geared their money to the Euro now instead of the American dollar.............Jeannie T
When I wrote this article Spring was just tippy toeing in....but it's really nice here now...Daffodils are in full bloom, and someone said they saw a red bud tree blooming....We've been working out in the yard a LOT today, and I had to get hubby to look at my back to see what was crawling...an inchworm had got down my shirt! I let him crawl around on my pants, too , then hubby's, because we both need new gardening pants.....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:06:51 -0700 "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> writes: > I'm sorry you're not looking like spring back there. Son loves to keep up on what's going on around the world and passes along some very disturbing tid bits....He does computer work for the military, etc. and has access to things before they are made public at times..I'm sure if he told me EVERYthing that he learns I'd be upset all the time....He SAW a 6 dollar jump on the dog food he uses while stocking up at Wal Mart.....Already things were unbelievably expensive....now...I don't see how folks with big families can make it....The 300 to 600 dollars promised by the Government in May will disappear in a flash.......I don't usually file taxes, but will this year...Getting it done free ..A couple different groups do that, but the AARP over at the Senior Center are already booked up till the sign up is over...Remember, YOU can get it if you file, whether you have enough income to qualify on a regular basis.... One bright note..if dog food goes up that much, maybe some of the folks in our neighborhood will get rid of those big, BARKING dogs......Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:56:58 -0500 Judy Arnold <judith@omuonline.net> writes: > Is your son an importer or what does he do, Jeannie? > I agree with you that we had better start watching out > for ourselves and quit depending on other countries > so totally.. > Judy > >

I'm sorry you're not looking like spring back there. Here in western Oregon, spring has arrived. The daffodils are out in full glory, and I see some bulbs are up about 3 inches. I think they could be tulips or hyacinths. I saw a tulip tree in full bloom. It was gorgeous. A lady here at the apts said she had seen azaleas blooming but I haven't seen those yet. The flowering trees are completely blossomed out and the weeping willows are completely green with the new leaf buds showing up. We're still having rain but not heavy, just enough to get the flowers started. I had to take a closer look, because cheek to jowl with those 'buttercups' was one of the sweet smelling little jonquils I thought had been lost forever already bl;oomed , lying on the mulch....It's wee bulb must have been tucked in with Mama's buttercups and has taken years to mature enough to flower..Or is it just a little 'hello' from Ma ? Awhile back I wrote an article about growing plants in containers , etc,and thought I would print it again in case we have new readers or forgetful people ! I added a bit...*grin* We have a big garden but don't use most of it so last week I got some rolls of black plastic to cover the unused area and plan to make planting holes here and there and plant gourds, punkins, melons, cukes, etc and just let them ramble. Beats mowing, I think, and if it's doesn't work out, not much loss. I was thinking I needed to prop up the plastic in an arc behind the holes to funnel rainwater coming down the gentle slope....Maybe use stacks of newspaper or flattened tin cans ? Bermuda grass is a curse, so can't use bare dirt ...Plus hubby hates to mow it and refuses to till it. *grin* Needs must....Any ideas to share ? We already have one area covered with plastic...the width of one of those big rolls....Put two rolls end to end..We set up a planting bed in the middle....cut out the plastic after several months and hauled in dirt to fill half of it and are working on making dirt in the other end with scraps, clippings, etc.... Since many of you live in the mountains or have little gardening space I thought you might get some good out of this article I wrote recently when someone asked me how you'd go about gardening or raising plants on rock, shale and clay . Theres several things you can do , such as ; Haul in woods dirt from the nearest place and make planting pockets among the rocks...Look around and see where weeds and grass are growing ... root them out and put in flowers or veggies...Grow vining veggies on trellises made of sticks wired and nailed together . Hook strings to nails on poles , buildings or trees if there is enough sun,and train beans up the strings...Or cukes, gourds, morning glories...etc. You can grow a lot of things in boxes of woods dirt.... You can buy bags of dirt and plant things right in the bag...Potting soil is best, but cheaper top soil or compost will work. Just lay it on the side where you want it to stay , make some slits around the bottom for drainage, and cut X's in the top to set out tomatoes, whatever...You'll have to keep it watered....Cover with leaves or other mulch to look better..If you embed some rag strips in the bottom before you set the stuff out, you can run that strip down into a jug of water mixed with a little fertilizer....Just re fill the jug when empty...Have a series of bags or 5 gal buckets of dirt in a row...walk along with the hose and water them all at once...Don't want to use a wick, just make a little hole in one side of the bottom of a milk jug, and set it at the base of your plant or bush...The water will drip out slowly and not be wasted....Mulch with anything that has ever been alive...shredded paper, old hay, leaves, grass clippings you have dried first...newspapers torn in strips....Tear them from top to bottom, with the grain of the paper...{Think it don't matter ? Try it...paper towels are the same way.} You CAN use whole sheets of newspaper , but must weight them down good... Set a few vegetables among your flowers if you have limited space...A border of carrots, onions, or strawberries looks pretty...Set clumps of asparagus in your flower beds....when you are through cutting for the summer it will grow into an airy beautiful plant..Grow garlic around your roses...helps them and is handy to dig when you need it...Rainbow Swiss chard is pretty growing, as are beets...Radishes left alone will get huge and grow tall plants with dainty pink or purple flowers on them. The seed pods taste just like radishes, and are mild flavored...They will keep growing and blooming till frost, usually... My cousins who live on a farm tried growing tomatoes, egg plant, etc. in a series of buckets and were well pleased with the results...The dirt out of them can be mixed with mulch and fertilizer and used again...OR , you can dump it all on a place you want to build up dirt....stack the buckets and start all over again next year. You could even paint the buckets, I guess...You could line those plastic milk crates with heavy plastic and use that...One cousin planted cucumbers in a childs plastic sand box...or you could use wading pools with a hole for drainage. All the grass underneath will be killed out...so don't set it in the middle of your lawn ! You can make your own dirt by hauling in bags of discarded leaves, spoiled hay, weeds, ,etc....If you can get the tree trimmers to dump their load of chips....Just mix with nitrogen fertilizer to break down the fibers and some dirt ...This works better the second year the chips are there..Sawdust is good,{ Again, use some nitrogen fertilizer to break it down }.. hen house debris...rotted manure ...Lawn services must dump the bags of grass clippings...If your place is closer than the dump.....well ! Your County extension agent might be able to help youfind sources ...Haul sand from a handy creek to mix with that clay...Also till in lots of leaves, sawdust, whatever...Garden on the shares with a neighbor...Wish I had someone to do that with...Have a big garden and just keep it mowed..Garden in corners here and here ... Oh me, I've made myself tired with all this work ! Gonna pour myself a big glass of tea and rest awhile ! Jeannie T ************************************************************************* *****
There was an article in our newspaper this morning that talked about the food issue, also. Anything made with wheat will go up in price. Of course we knew anything made with corn will go up since farmers will be putting their production into the ethanol products. I have already got a taste of the higher prices. I live alone. I did some shopping Friday and spent $55 for mostly just basic foods, no meat or anything spendy. And I went to a discount store so I wasn't paying high prices. I had just spent $101.00 just two weeks ago so there I spent $155 in just over two weeks on groceries. I have to go back tomorrow to buy the things I need to make an egg casserole for our church for Sunday, so there will go another $30 probably. Whooeeee!!! I guess the old saying "easy come easy go" still stands. Linda, I hope all is going well with the expectant mother. Sounds like great fun! I hope to take my grandkids to the fair--but I'm getting so down in my knees--it'll be a challenge. Ruth
WEDDED BLISS A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the girl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand. "That's a serious step," he said. Have you thought it out completely? "Sure," his young son answered. "We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It's right across the street, so I can run home if I get lonely in the night." How about transportation? the father asked. "I have my wagon and we both have our tricycles," the little boy answered. The boy had an answer to every question the father raised. Finally, in exasperation, the man asked, "What about babies? When you're married, you're liable to have babies, you know." We've thought about that, too," the boy replied. "We're not going to have babies. Every time she lays an egg, I'm gonna step on it."
