Yeah MaryClyde, I guess I was 10 before I knew it was Kerosene, I still have family's two coal-oil lamps, not sure how old, don't remember one ever breaking so they must be 1936 models. When I first moved beck from Michigan, I had a neighbor who told me about buggs... He said you see that mint growing by the creek-take it and twist till juice comes out and rub all over you before going to your garden.. I did just that and every bugg in the country just about eat me alive-they liked mint... And this man was a preacher to... I bet he was setting over at his house watching me slap every thing in sight...never did get evern with him... I agree with Bobby on the karosene and turpintine... Some one told me Avon Skin So Sofe was good to rubb on before going out side-but who wants to spend that much money on a jar.. If you get a chiggger just dab the spot with fingernail polish, it can`t get any air and dies.. Hey Stella, I seem to remember something about a coal-oil soaked rag tied around our ankles and one around each wrist outside the shirtsleeve cuff when we went blackberry pickin when I was a kid. Anybody else from the south remember anything like that ? I know coal-oil and turpinetine was used for lots of things that don't sound reasonable now. Blackberry cobbler was worth a lot back then, a few chiggers didn't hold us back from some good eatin. Stellllllllllllllla......Mornin' !! dormant oil is just an oily spray that kills certain types of pests before they can chomp anything...... I have made it using mineral oil / castile soap / water.... use twice as much mineral oil as water add some castile soap or any oil based soap. Or just look in garden section at wallyworld etc. for dormant oil. Sounds similar to you're using baby oil on the kids. My gramma used PineSol for everything and now the smell of it makes me gak.... puuueeee! paulette in sw fla usa.....it's housework day today.... another thing that makes me gak!! it's a good day to be alive On Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 8:54 AM, Stella Roper <busmar1852@webtv.net> wrote: > Paulette...Now...I have a ?????? Stella, I think several of us posted something about a back up supply of foodstuffs should be had by all. Storms, illness, power failures, etc. that can prevent a trip to the market. I like to feel secure in the knowledge that I have these things on hand. There are many non perishables on the market and some in one serving cans so that the lack of refrigeration isn'a problem. Some can be used right out of the can.jar with no cooking or other preparation is neccesary. One needs to choose according to the familie's likes Dried fruits are a good item to have on hand. I think nearly everyone likes baked beans. The instant cereals are a good choice if you have a way to heat water, There are many choices of things that will keep a long time if properly stored. From my own experience, I found that 'canned ' fruits and fruit juices have the shortest shelf life of other canned goods, so I now prefer the ones in glass. Once you start building your supply stash, you will find many things to add as you go along, a few extra things each shopping trip will soon give you a good backup. Don't forget the paper products. Iused to have a large garden at our place in Georgia, had much smaller patchs in othe places and usually had enough for our own needs. I california, had a 'very' small space but was determined to make use of it.I planted zuchini at the end of a planter box and trained it up on a small trellis. Well, Mr. Zuchini went traveling over the trellis and onto the block wall fence behind the three neighboring houses. I finally had to cut it out by the roots, it didn't want to give up. We all had our fill of zuchini that summer. My tomato plants did well in redwood tubs on the back patio. Bell , I believe there are a lot of people missing that no one cares about.. When I was a teen I lived with a woman who use to be in vaudville as a dancer -plus mixed with the Purple Gang mobb in Detroit.. Of course she was a christian when i lived with her.. She would tell me storys about her past.. One I remember was about White Slavery... Stealing pretty girls and useing them in Brothels, giveing them drugs and when there mind and bodies were wore out and useless.. They had a place the girls did`nt know about in the floor.. When they wanted to get rid of a certain woman who was useless.. This part of the floor would open up and she fell into a furnace-never herd of again.. So if they don`t want Jimmy Hoffa found He`ll never be found... Cruel World Is`nt It ??? About 20 years ago, I was living in Southern California. Rumors were going around that Jimmy Hoffa was buried in the foundation of a ritzy golf resort in Southern California. No one had proof and I doubt anyone really cares. Draining any lake , river, canal, etc. would bring up many things, not things we would like to see. CDC: Salmonella illnesses spread to 16 states The Associated Press 10:16 AM EST June 8, 2008 Salmonella food poisoning first linked to uncooked tomatoes has spread to 16 states, federal health officials said Saturday. Investigations by the Texas and New Mexico Departments of Health and the U.S. Indian Health Service have tied 56 cases in Texas and 55 in New Mexico to raw, uncooked, tomatoes. "We're seeing a steady increase," Deborah Busemeyer, New Mexico Department of Health communications director, said Saturday. An additional 50 people have been sickened by the same Salmonella "Saintpaul" infection in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Investigators are trying to determine if raw tomatoes also are responsible for the illnesses in those states, said Arleen Porcell, a CDC spokeswoman. The source of the tomatoes responsible for the illnesses has not been pinpointed, but health officials in Texas and New Mexico said none of them was grown in those two states. At least 23 people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported, she said. Patients ranged in age from 1 to 82. The rarity of the Saintpaul strain and the number of illnesses "suggest that implicated tomatoes are distributed throughout the country," she said. Interviews conducted with 73 people found the illnesses began between April 16 and May 27, Porcell said. Source of outbreak Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak, Busemeyer said. Also not associated with the outbreak are raw Roma, red plum and round red tomatoes from Arkansas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Association.
