I get organic home grown eggs from my grandson's store in Hattisbug Ms. Sometimes they run smaller...but are so good. Stella

Yeah, I've read stuff about telling the sex but I think instead of scaring them to death messing around "down there" I'll just wait for them to get a little older and see what they turn out to be. If they're roosters, I'll just give them to my grandson who's raising some game chickens... or maybe I'll keep them and use them for an alarm clock and maybe they'll wake me up before 9 am... lol MaryClyde ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 11:11 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Chickens... > My parents raised chickens and I had to gather the eggs too. The first Spring we lived here birds just about drove us nuts ! The open windows at night let us hear the birds very clearly...and theres a dense woods all along the back of the yards up here on the ridge...Since we had a heat pump put in hubby insists on keeping the windows closed all the time, so I don't get to hear as much of the little critters as I would like... Today as I walked down to the garden I noticed something moving in the wild tangle that is our neighbors far back yard...it was a wild canary busily tearing apart a thistle head to get at the seeds....We can't hardly stand the way they have let that area go to pot, but have truly enjoyed watching it revert to nature...One year one plant will dominate and the next year it's something else....Lots of narrow/curly dock this year....hoping critters/birds like the seed, but i dunno. One year ragweed dominated....next year...not a sign of it....Last year it stayed a mass of white flowers, as the little wild aster or flea bane flowered..This year it's a Dukes mixture...Wondering what next year will bring ! It no longer bothers us...Wild plum is flourishing, and where we fed the starving horse and goats peaches, peach trees line the fence...Oh yeah, Ma Nature is working on it.....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Wed, 25 Jun 2008 20:46:25 -0700 "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> writes: > Back in 1970 we moved to the country in central Oregon. Hey y'all, Did I tell you that I got 3 little baby chickens last week? Well I did and I'm gonna start, when they get old enough, gathering my own eggs. They are the cutest little things! When I got them they were just a little ball of fuzz... and now, a week later, they have feathers that reach almost to their tails and they even have tail feathers now. They're Rhode Island Reds and I hope they're all females!!! I remember, when I was a child, pretty close to a hunnert years ago, we raised chickens and I would love to run out and get the egg before it even got cold... sometimes they would still be soft. I live out in the country and have only one close neighbor... and he's my brother, bless his heart... he's all stooped over with osteoperosis (sp?). He's getting ready to turn 77 and I'll soon be 75. Wow! I can't believe it... seems like only yesterday we were little tykes sneaking off with some potatoes that we dug and a bucket and going to the branch way back in the woods and building a fire and boiling those taters... and boy were they good, even if we did forget to bring any salt!!! We thought we were something... it's a wonder we didn't set the place on fire! Man, I'm wound up tonight... Take care all... MaryClyde

On warm summer nights you can hear the frogs croaking in the side ditches and down in the shallow pond among the cattails...Listening to the wee peepers and the 'belly deep' croak of the bull frogs is one of my favorite memories. It seems like they all croak in their own key, making up a wonderful country chorus , with Katydids , crickets and other bugs adding courting calls in the background ...Lightning bugs flicker down in the pasture signaling to their mates hidden in the tall weeds and grass..and June bugs keep banging against the screen trying to get to the lamplight...Till the cats catch and eat them.... Remember when just about everyone ate all the eggs they wanted ? Bacon or sausage and eggs cooked to order to go with the milk gravy and biscuits was a normal breakfast for hard working farm folks....There was always molasses on the table, and preserves of one kind or another....While we were enjoying this feast we often heard an old hen outside that had just replaced one of those eggs in her nest and was proudly telling the rooster and the world of this feat... Remember how those hens used to amble around the yard 'singing' sometimes ? Just so they didn't start crowing ... That meant a pot of chicken and dumplins for sure ! We can't go back even if we wanted to, but......we have our fine memories ...Life is good.... ruling that it would violate the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. What about that poor child??? Wasn't THAT cruel and unusual punishment??? I don't understand how a person can be so mean as to rape a small innocent child... This Supreme Court needs to wake up!!! They're not getting my guns!! Even if I DON'T know how to shoot them... Gotta do that one day soon... Good luck ! Sometimes I don't know why I do what I do when cooking, but it just seemed like a little thickening would make it more like regular dressing, and stick to the leaves....I also make a low cal salad dressing type deal with just vinegar, water, salt , pepper and sugar to taste. IT reminds me of wilted lettuce just a bit...No oil....Could use sweetener....Can't get much more low cal than that.... Remember back in the day, boys played at farming, and girl's had play house ?....That is if they were 'normal' kids...Mama told me years later that she finally gave up on getting us interested in play houses...she would set them up for us, look out awhile later to see how we were doing and we would be climbing trees, etc....An 'elderly'{ At least 35 or 40 } neighbor lady that didn't know about this helped us set up a playhouse near her driveway once...nice ditch , bank etc...She put dry dock seed on a hollowed out sand rock for coffee grounds...little round stones were potatoes, etc....She really got into it and had a great time....but we lost interest and never played there again....'Miss' Mariney Beasley....a wonderful neighbor.... Remember when the canned milk , called 'cream' ,was left setting out on the table winter and summer to pour into folks coffee?....I remember it had 2 little holes poked in the top with an ice pick ... Never knew of it spoiling...In later years my thrifty ex Mother in law would pour a small can of Pet milk into a quart milk bottle then fill it up with water to use in coffee...this was refrigerated between uses....
