We have rain rain and more rain with just a bit of wind.........the rain that is heading away from me appears to be much worse. The east coast is getting much worse than us'ns here on the west coast. The storm is spawning tornadoes so batten down the hatches and prepare for those evil spinners. I watch a web site called the "Golden Triangle Weather Page" . They update every 15 minutes. You reminded me of when I made grape juice. I did it the lazy way. I found a recipe where you put the grapes into the jar, covered with the water mixture, and it made juice in the jar. I didn't have to mash the grapes and make the juice the regular way. The juice was good but awfully sweet. Stelllllllllla..... stella....... thanks for the thoughts .... at dad's it was 9;00 pm when the first siren went off......someone called to tell us about the tornado warning as the tree limbs were flying past the living room window. I secured what I could and that was it until midnight. I was still up and watchin' out the window at midnight when the 2nd siren sounded. Dad had fallen asleep and his snoring almost overwhelmed the sound of the siren....... no wonder I couldn't sleep!!! He slept plumb through the 2nd big blow and the power failure. :HE:Y!!! check your email address for me cuz I had only a very few emails. I did eat some goodies from the garden after yankin' out weeds. The tornado took out the zoo-key-nees (now how in the world is that spelt???) Lots and lots of tomatoes on the ground that needed to be staked up..... what a job. Lost a few big limbs from peach tree but harvested a bushel basket of fruit. Let me tell you that soon as I got off the plane, I headed straight for a White Castle..... OH MOMMA!!!! YUMMMMEEEE!! I think some of y'all will be getting the effects of TS Fay. Still waiting to see ifn she turns into a full blown hurricane. Am mostly prepared.....just a few last minutes things to secure. Well, this is the way I heard it... A giirl potato and boy potato had eyes for each other, and finally they got married, and had a little sweet potato, which they called 'Yam.' Of course, they wanted the best for Yam. When it was time, they told her about the facts of life. They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato' and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots. Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her! But on the other hand she wouldn't stay home and become a Couch Potato either. She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins. When she went off to Europe , Mr. and Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland. And the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. And when she went out west, to watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get scalloped. Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks that say 'Frito Lay.' Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's PotatoUniversity) so that when she graduated she'd really be in the Chips. But in spite of all they did for her, one day Yam came home and announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw. . Tom Brokaw! Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset. They told Yam she couldn't possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he's just...... a...well...a .. . Are you ready for this? . . .. Are you sure? * * OK! Here it is! * * * * * * ** A COMMONTATER

Yes, I have the same memories...we picked them every year. Mama made pies too. I saw them this week at our farmers market but I prefer jelly from Scuppernongs, now. Stella
As I checked out the grapes at Wal Mart I began talking to a little old lady about them, and she said she remembered a type of wild grapes that folks called Muscadines...With a faraway look in her eye she softly describes the vines and the way they grow up in the trees and bear small clusters of 'black 'fruit...I told her I knew about them and loved them...She said she grew up over in West TN near where Loretta Lynn's Ranch is now, but 'Of course nobody had ever heard of Loretta Lynn back in those days'...We had a good time reminiscing, and I told her Wal Mart gets Muscadines in , and went and asked a nearby stock clerk when they would get them...He said the middle of August or first part of September, and they would be stocked near the strawberries....I told the little old lady they would be pricey, and she said she'd store them in her refrigerator and just eat a few along and remember the good old days as she savored them.... I got to thinking............What price would you put on a happy memory, when you were young and your entire life stretched out ahead of you ? It was a simple thing to climb trees and pick the juicy 'grapes' for Mama to make into delicious jelly and the hulls were made into preserves......Back in those days I had no aches and pains, no wrinkles or handfuls of pills to take...I reckon those Muscadines will be worth more to her than just about anything.....Jeannie T ____________________________________________________________ It's never been easier to change your name. If all kids enjoyed gardens as much as Ol Buzz more folks would plant them...That's the first place he wants to go when he visits...and claims the entire garden, not just his wide planting row, where he grew potatoes, carrots, purple beans and snow peas..... He loves almost all vegetables, but not crazy about meat..... I stay with sister Reba when I go to West TN and her grandson Alex is right up there with Buzz when it comes to being precocious....I set him out a 'volunteer' tomato plant and he waited impatiently for it to bear ....One day Sis pointed out to him that it had 3 little 'tommy toe' tomatoes on it..one turning orange. She asked him what he was going to do with it and he said ' COOK IT !" Then he got all excited...said " We can open a fruit stand !" She told him most people considered tomatoes to be vegetables...Unfazed, he said 'Well, we'll open a VEGETABLE stand then ! Ah, the innocence of youth....I don't know what sis did to that poor plant, but I don't think she inherited a green thumb ! *grin* Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ On Tue, 12 Aug 2008 20:18:56 -0700 "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> writes: > It would be good if kids nowadays could grow even a small garden to > see where their vegetables come from.
