    3. Bobby, I like to peel, and slice apples, in small slices and drop in cold salted water..and when you get about a quart strain off water, (I pick them up by hand out of the water) and put in freezer bags for winter. You can make pies, stew them with sugar and cinnamon, or just heat and eat with oatmeal as I do, unsweetened.. Stella

    3. In 76-77 there was a small resturant in Joilet on West Jefferson that had fine biscuits and gravy, but they imported a hill girl from Tenneesee to show them how. I ate many a down home breakfast there while working in an electrical wire plant, preparing it to relocate to Arkansas. Lots of good ole southern boys heard about them or possibly smelled them cooking and stopped by early mornings. Bobby

    3. How about like 3 hours? In boiling water in a cold pack. Less if you have a pressure cooker which I never had. Buy a Kerr or Ball canning book and follow it exactly. That's how I learned to can. Green beans and corn and vegetable soup, I remember took 3 hours. I think baked beans did too. My husband loved them so I would can some quarts of them for him and the kids. I've never cared that much for baked beans. That is an all day affair to can them. This is from memory but I soaked the beans overnight. Then cooked them the next morning. Then put them with all the additives (catsup, brown sugar, etc) in a roasting pan and baked them for so long. Then I put them in the jars and processed them for 3 hours. Now you can tell how much I loved my husband. <grin> It really was an act of love, with all the work involved. Well, last winter was the coldest I remember, here in a long time, and the low temps lasted for days, which is unusual here.Lots of plants were killed, from it Paulette, they are basing that on the oceans conditions...most think that global warming has a lot to do with it...but i think we all just know about it now, from heavy population and communications. When I was a kid...I didn't know what it was doing even in Fl. But the trouble will be affording heat. I wish I still had my house. had a wood insert in my big den fireplace. Oh well.......... 3. I'm reading how y'all take advantage of the local produce and why oh why didn't I ever think of buying and canning?? Sometimes I just amaze my own self with my own silliness. I can't do the freezer but I surely am able to can. We have a couple of farmers' markets where I could get some goodies. You guys are such an inspiration...... now I've got to get out and find a canning pot...... and *I think I saw one at WallyWorld and it was affordable. I did put baggies of strawberries in the freezer. It's ok to can corn, right? paulette in sw fla usa.... I feel my southern roots protruding.... * On Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM, Peace Roses <Roses4831@msn.com> wrote: > I had a large 22 cu ft chest freezer until I sold my house after my husband > died. 3. Paulette, We sometimes have a problem with ants, leaving a bit of honey, syrup or grease around the sink can draw thousands of them to share . We have to make sure we don't leave anything out for them to get to. Water bugs and spiders appear now and then but not often. These homes have no basements or attics so the bugs have to have someplace to go. I haen't seen a roach in the 7 years we have lived here, my daughter seems to be a pretty good housekeeper. The extremely low humidity also keeps them from multiplying very fast. My friend in California puts crumbled 'bsy leaves around in her kitchen cabiners, says they keep the bugs and ants away. Hope you are doing ok and had no damage from the storm. My best to you, Belle in North Las Vegas, Nv, ----- Original Message ----- From: "Smoochie Newton" <smoochieangelpie@gmail.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 1:39 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Cold Winter > golly STella...... long long long time ago I had a great house too......had > a fireplace that I just loved....and a bay window that had doors opening out > to the yard.
