I'm with you ! Theres an ad in the local paper that they are paying $10.00 per hundred pounds after they are shelled....If the kids and all picked up walnuts they could make a tidy bit. You can rake them up in a pile, scoop them into gunny sacks. Some folks around here do it every year...LOTS of them this year...A young tree down by the garden is bearing for the first time as far as I know, and is loaded down with nuts....The one that volunteered up out behind our storage shed has huge walnuts on it...and taste good , too....My flower beds are littered with seedlings....Guess we have forgetful squirrels....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ On Wed, 1 Oct 2008 08:33:00 -0700 "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> writes: > Back in the early 50's, before we had any kids, my husband's distant > (and I do mean distant) cousin had just got married and we were > friends. Back in the early 50's, before we had any kids, my husband's distant (and I do mean distant) cousin had just got married and we were friends. They were saying they couldn't find work and his car was broke down. This was in the fall. Both my husband and I were working. I worked day shift and my husband worked swing shift. We had taken them a sack of groceries once and maybe twice just to help out. So they could have an income, my husband told his cousin that since it was walnut picking time, I would take them out to the fields in the morning and pack them a sack lunch, and I would go back and pick them up after I got off work. We realized they wouldn't get rich but they would have some money coming in. His cousin told him he would rather starve then pick up walnuts. My husband said then they could starve. He told me I wasn't to take any more groceries to them. When we were first married and moved to Oregon, we picked beans to have an income so my husband didn't see anything wrong with them doing some work too. I also stock up on Cheerios and other things when they are two for one or a good sale. There's a Sav-a-lot fairly close which usually has deals on canned goods.....they had canned peas for TEN CENTS a can.... probably not the best in the world but good enough to put in soup or to mix in the hard food for the doggies - can't forget out my critters. paulette in sw fla usa...... beans beans and more beans... Mornin' all..... I wasn't here for the depression either but I have heard many who were there talk about it....my dad for one. I've tried to store up everything we use all the time.....day to day items. All sorts of canned goods / nonperishables. Even if nothing at all happens, this will all eventually be used. Dad told me that he recalls getting a sack of flour, a sack of cornmeal, lard and yellow coloring for the lard, taters sometimes. Some men had jobs to chop trees; then they got to keep some of the wood for their stoves. Grandpa was in charge of a WPA work crew so grandpa received $2.00 more per week than the crew. There was a bit of money but not enough to make life comfortable...... everyone just existed. My father-in-law told of having no shoes at all (ten kids in that family) and wrappin' his feet in paper or rags to keep them warm. All my grandparents had gardens of some sort. Anyhoo..... as J.t. said.... blankets and things of that sort too.... sewing notions....etc. My brain has gone outside, I guess.... I can't think straight..... somebody give some good advice... I don't really believe our economy will be in that sorry shape this time. As STella said, things are different now. Judy...do you live close to a Dollar General store? I found out last year that a large tomato growing and packing , family business in Indiana is RED GOLD...and they raise, package and ship under three labels. The label called VINE RIPE is to discount stores, school and hospitals etc. And I found it at Dollar General. They have 3 tomato paste for 1.00...2 large cans tomato sauce for 1.00 and large cans spaghetti sauce...and sometimes large cans tomato Juice. They have bags of pinto beans (raised in AR. for 1.25...also Garbanzo beans, and 2lb bags brown sugar for 1.25. White sugar is 4 lbs for 1.75. I call that staples. I also have cans of good brand vegetables...with the date code as far ahead as you can find. Spaghetti, macaroni and any pasta you like, will keep well if wrapped again...or in freezer. Also boxed oatmeal is a good staple food.If worst came to worst...and I did not have butter...I could eat oatmeal with brown sugar and cinnamon. I bought several jars of my favorite coffee creamer, and coffee too. I like cherrios and eat them for my cholesterol...so I have a freezer full...ever time I see them on sale...I have most herbs growing outside and inside too.. all I buy is garlic, and garlic powder. because I moved off and left my garlic. But just think of good sturdy soups if your family will eat that...and buy the makings..if you like cheddar cheese soup, or broccoli or whatever. I like vegetables in tomato sauce or T.soup, with a little macaroni in it. I bought a 7.2 cubic foot freezer in July...and I went to farmers market and got fresh foods and it's about full. I noticed that the Dollar store had the cans of Lite spam...my hubby used to like that. It is fairly decent ingredients. I didn't get it though...I watch the sodium. They also have large cans of Campbells chicken and dumplings that my brother likes. If you are firing up a BBQ grill instead of the stove you can warm such things as that. We will have food of some sort to eat, I don't doubt that.. The Bible says "Do not be anxious about tomorrow, or what you will eat or what you will wear, because your Heavenly Father knows you need these things" I try every fall, to stock up on staple soup ingredients, juices, and other drinks, like teas, in case I get sick. Then I don't have to call anyone. Wish I could find some of that 4.00 honey...I paid 8.50 for a plastic bottle, not a full quart...of local raw honey. See ya later...Stella

Belle, it is not gonna come to that kind of living this time...Too much money out there.(and majority do not know how, or do not have the means) They have all been moved to 'town' and farms not operating...they could not live...Something will be worked out but it will be tough on honest hard working folks for a long time, those who are striving to raise a family on nothing but a job, and minimal payday.....you know in the 1930's depression,Roosevelt(the Gov.) bought up a lot of the houses...and the people were allowed to stay in their homes, with much smaller payments adjusted rates etc...and the government actually came out fine and ahead, but there is no comparison now....Too many institutions lending corporations, and banks and finance companies now...and this global commerce is all wrapped up in it. My husband used to say,(thirty years ago) it will get to where if you 'spit' it will be held against you in China". You know...we used the country of China in a lot of expressions before we even knew what China was...guess we always knew it was 'far off' or something...like the old song, that I loved in high school......"slow Boat To China" . Ya'll hold down the fort...I have to go to the rehab and take my brother some clothes...(after I launder them!) Stella . "THE LOVE OF MONEY! " The root of all kinds of injurious things!

I see the trouble here in Tuscaloosa..in housing. Every developer (and his wife)...going in business, of using a bank for money, and his property for collateral...and goes out to all suburbs, including the hills and 'gullies' and clears away trees, pulls down the hills, builds shoddy 'hurry up' houses and most are just three bedrooms...but contain up to 34oo square ft or more. Some are all in the four to five hundred thousand.... and the appraisers and brokers making deals to get people in them. Most are sold before they are fiinished...that way they can select the latest appliances and colors etc. All the young people think they have to have one, (and parents of young couples..seem to help them get ahead of their friends or something!.)..now after the period, of the fine print that they don't read..like three years...when the mortgage balloons, and payments are higher...and interest rates not so good, and with inflation, and by then they also had bought two to three vehicles...with a child or two...and a boat, and pets that cost as much to take to the vet as a child to a doctor, and eating places here in every direction, almost touching, parking lot to parking lot, nobody cooks much anymore...put it on "plastic"...people are in over their heads.Add to that...factories and companies closing...moving overseas, and the like, and the house payment, does not get paid after the credit cards are maxed out... This is all true plus more..my oldest daughter is a realtor. The fabulous garden homes and rows of condos..here are going... one by one with a sign out front. I plan to get sugar today...Paulette, funny you would mention that! I could so easily see why that deal was rejected yesterday...I had already told my son, that I doubted if those millionaire, ones in congress, had had enough time to contact all their "buddies" back home to get the private financing, from them,(lending corporations and such) so they will make money off this...we know an attorney here who is in an advisory group to them...giving advice on this...they were not considering the middle class, when they voted NO......they were looking out for the fat cats who line their pockets. 'You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" deals. They are working to get their friends to put up this money, not the treasury....because they will get a cut from the payback when it comes.Wait and see they will have made some deals by Thursday, or have it in place to do,they will vote onThursday...and maybe won't try to blame someone else, they are probably gonna make out like McCain is hlping them...I had rather see the government own an equity in the properties than a bank, or lending corporation. One of the house of Reps, from this district already has his name here at the New University Law Building, and a bypass to the interstate that everyone says we didn't need...and he owns several of these big developments (apartments and Condos ) This is very serious for little people..but they make it sound like it is a bail out of wallstreet...it is nothing but greed, the way they turn every deal to make themselves money, Doesn't bother them, if the little people who are struggling, get caught up in it. Dear Stella, Thanks for your concern. I think you are right. We are ok at this point as are most of my close kin. Nobody knows what will happen next. Even those of us who thought we were well covered can't be sure of anything. Both sides of my family hsd great losses back in the last depression, property, money in the bank, businesses, etc. We lived on property where lots of food was grown. That helped get us and others through some of the bad times. My father had a small restaurant and always had soup and cornbread on hand whether one was able to pay or not. Farmers in the area donated produce for cooking and feeding many who wandered through town. It was a small town and no jobs other than on the farns. He never let anyone go away hungry. He did have to close it up after awhile, just couldn''t keep it going.Too many in need. Mornin'..... well, stella,,,,, I'm in your boat so scoot over a little bit. My hope and dream was to be self-sufficient at this point but that just didn't happen for whatever reasons (about a million and one). So.... I have stashed enough food away for us and any kids that will show up when things get really bad. One has landed back in the nest all ready. I also noticed the prices creepin' up so for those who can, better get in some supplies before that bag of sugar costs $10.00. Boy oh boy,,,,, I sure do wish I still had my house from years ago..... dang dang and double dang! I ; am almost afraid to vote..... either way seems disastrous. The Libertarians and other party candidates don't have a chance of a snowball in sw florida so voting form any of them seems senseless. What is the answer??? The Elder Bush talked of a One World Order....he mentioned it many times during his presidency...... looks like that's where we're headed. If things are going to be as bad as some think (depression era bad)..... maybe those with kids would want to buy some clothes for next year at this year's prices?? From what I've been reading,,,,, this debacle began back in the Carter administration; carried forward and has been laid at our feet. We must get through this without going insane. I know we can help each other in some ways.. Personally, I would like to know that those people at the top end of this disaster, the crooks who manipulated books and made millions..... are held accountable. paulette in sw fla usa..... I've been praying but I don't think God is listening xoxoxoxoxo On Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 1:36 AM, Stella Roper <busmar1852@webtv.net> wrote: > Well...girls and guys, it seems the hard times we thought wascomng, was > dumped in our laps.If you have any mutual funds, or money market money > that you wlll need in the next ten years..you best draw it out. I told Son bank accounts are insured and he said something that made me stop and think/sweat..He said "It may be insured , but they don't say how long it would take you to get it..."..Hmnnnn.....The shape the government is in right now ? No telling ! I wonder if it would be a good idea to postpone the elections for awhile ? Not because I like the present setup, but things are in such a turmoil....What we do affects other countries, so watch as other banks, etc. around the world start sliding. Mama said years ago that all it would take is one main country going down the tubes...It never occurred to me it would be US ! Son said Wal Mart only had big bags of sugar recently so he bought one..I went to that store a week later and 4 or 5 lb. bags of sugar was on the shelf, but at $3.89.....I saw it here for 2 dollars...and at a regular market the other side of him in W TN 2 for $4.00....Don't know if theres a shortage or not. I bought 4 cases of quart jars of honey while I was in W TN..so we'll be able to have sweets if we don't mind honey for a long time ! It was $4.00 ajar, but is going up to 4.50....No telling what it will be by the time we run out! Bees are scarce on the ground now...diseases and pollution, sprays...I used to keep bees..may get a hive if I get the chance.... We own our home and two cars , no debts , have fruit trees and vines, a big garden spot, room enough and ordinances OK for a few chickens and rabbits...maybe a milk goat if we buy hay..Maybe make arrangements to let it eat the underbrush in the wide swath of woods behind our property....Lots of fallen trees in the woods we could burn ...I have the attic full of stored stuff, so good insulation, possibility of making craft items to sell or trade for things.....Water heater has a timer on it that comes on in the morning and gives us hot water for two showers or a load or two of clothes.....We are about a mile from the Cumberland River that never has frozen over in winter in the 25 years we've been here....So could fish...We have a good dryer, but hang our clothes on the line.....Have a large extra tank of cooking gas on hand......Got a new deep freeze..upright..a few weeks ago...LOTS of canned food ...Dry beans, etc. Will be thinking on how we can prepare better.......We are indeed blessed...and about as ready as we can get. Hubby said we need to get a can or two of heating oil for the heater we have stashed...only used it once since we've been here..Have cell and regular phones....We don't keep money here and will defend what's ours very firmly.... I started getting ready for this 30 years ago..bought a wheat grinder, have meat grinders and bread machines, stainless steel mixing bowls and pans, iron skillets, PLENTY of towels, sheets, warm blankets, quilts, etc. It's just taken it a bit longer to get here, that's all ! Hubby and I both grew up poor, so we know how to survive.....I used to lecture on edible wild plants....have lots of books on home steading, etc...If you don't have Carla Emery's old fashioned cookbook better buy one....Tells how to care for critters, make cheese,...garden...Everything ! Theres TONS of deer here, and lots of wild turkeys... With everything going on in the economy and the world my frustration level is beyond my tolerance level. Today, listening to the radio, I heard someone liken the current conditions to "birth pangs".... EGADS.... my three hairs immediately stood on end. Then a bit later someone else mentioned that China wants a ONE WORLD CURRENCY... YIKES!! The three hairs that were previously standing on end completely fell out. I am so mad that I just can't even think straight. I took; what few cash dollars I have and bought non-perishables. Am worried about having NO FOOD or having enough food to feed anyone that will likely show up here if the economy tanks. Here's the delima...... should I invest in canning equipment (jars, canning pot) and put up my own stuff or just keep shopping for cheap goods? And what would be cost efficient enough to can myself?? I'm ready for any and every idea..... HEL:LLLLLLLPPPP!!!! paulette in sw fla usa..... p.s. I'm likely gonna glue those three hairs back on to my now bald head..... bald is definitely NOT BEAUTIFUL on me!!! ~~~: )~
Fall Schmall!! Now there's attitude for ya! I do miss the coo fall nights. It was almost cool here last night.... enough to leave the windows open most of the night until the humidity bumped back up.
