    1. Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Pressure Canner / Regular Canner
    2. My Ma canned small Iris potatoes in the lean to kitchen of her big log house, and she never had a pressure cooker in her life! Just a wood burning stove...She canned meat, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, small Irish potatoes ...etc...Mama canned thousands of quarts of food with a water pack canner most of her life but finally did get a canner...She'd can a hundred quarts of green beans, etc. I wish I could find that list she made one time ...it's mind boggling.....AND we had no electricity till it came through in 1947 or so...She canned on a wood cook stove with no cooling other than open windows and doors....No modern woman could do that....in my estimation...Some areas that have large migrant families might have a community kitchen with canners.......Some 'snow bird' MIGHT have a canner to sell.... Canning strawberries sure changes the flavor....DO you make preserves ? No pressure cooker needed...Son has decided he wants the big canner lost in my attic...I will hang onto the small canner that cans pints for now....Have given up on canning stuff and put bits and pieces in the new freezer....If the power goes off for good we'll can stuff on our gas stove or over a fire out back, I guess. I don't think it will get that dire....Have BooKoos's of canning jars of all sizes...Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Mon, 06 Oct 2008 18:54:27 +0000 smoochieangelpie@comcast.net (Smoochie Newton) writes: > > Which to choose? 2. TRY IT ! You've seen the yogurt with granola on top, right ? I fix my oatmeal the way I want it, then crumble up 3 wheat saltines from Kroger on top. Can't handle it straight any more.....The salt adds to it... Cracker bologna has a better flavor than regular bologna and is made in a roll that is a good size to fit on a saltine cracker.....I don't buy any other kind now...Hoop cheese is a type of Cheddar cheese...sold in wax covered hoops or circles...about a foot and a half across or bigger, and about 6 inches thick..Two kinds...Mild Cheddar in red wax, and sharp Cheddar in the black wax...Most stores sell it already cut now.... You're not the only one suffering with the heat...My nephew in LA said it was 103 deg. a couple days ago there...Said he took his Jack Russell for a walk and turned around after one block...Told him..'That's enough walking for today." 2. Isn't $3.00 a lb. a good price for ANY cheese ? I've heard of the Tillamook brand but have never been lucky enough to taste it...I keep wrapped slices of a good American cheese in the fridge, buy Swiss cheese in the Deli when I think of it, and go to Food Lion for the Amish made Hoop cheese once in awhile. I used to get Kroger brand Colby Longhorn but they discontinued it,.....Hubby and Buzz eat quite a bit of cheese...actually Buzz won't eat cheese at all, but he loves 'Colby', so hubby calls it all Colby....Strange child ! 1. Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Good ol' Bologna
    2. A few /many years ago when 4 of us dingbats went to California in a 9 passenger van we always stopped at a market for our lunch...and it was much more fun than eating at a restaurant....All areas have different things in their grocery stores...and I still enjoy browsing through Supermarkets...We got a chance to walk around and stretch our legs and buy all kinds of interesting things to eat...I remember friend Vivian putting potato chips on top of her sandwich..... If you count up all the lunches you fixed for your growing family I doubt they remember many of them with the warm memories of your cheese and bologna sandwiches......Bologna tasted better back then , anyway, because they put better meat in it....That was before all the preservatives, additives, and imported scrap meat came to be..... You could fry the bologna to give it a whole different taste...now days it's rare to find bologna that 'fries' good...The small rolls of Spring Hill 'cracker 'bologna is the best I've found lately....Cumberland Gap made a great bologna, plain or you could fry it, but they discontinued it. I told the butcher that's the main reason I shopped in that store but he couldn't get it any more...Said they'd had lots of complaints....Oh well, tried the small roll of cracker bologna { Sized to slice onto crackers }when it was on sale , hubby and Buzz love it...Wonder when they will drop THAT ? Seems like that's what happens....Find something unusually good and they drop it...... Hubby grew up eating a type of bologna called 'Rag' bologna, because it's encased in a wax covered cloth sack...It's a little like braunswieger...At the meat market where Son shops they sell it in one pound rolls...I occasionally buy hubby a few slices of it when I stop in on my way home...And of course I buy 3 homemade peach fried pies..I eat one on the way home and hubby never knows ! *grin*...He wouldn't care either, come to that, but it makes me feel slightly wicked....I also get him some Hoop cheese...you hold up fingers to measure off how big a hunk you want and they cut it with a big knife...Theres two types of this cheese in glass 'cake cover' type deals setting up on the ecounter....It's good cheese, but kinda pricey...You can get all those wooden boxes there that you want for less than $5.00.....I look at them, but have so many different sizes of them in the attic already...and not doing anything with them...Yes, my attic is an interesting place... One time on my way to my Son's I stopped in that store,{Trollingers, near Paris, TN], and noticed they had an end piece of roast beef...asked the price they said it was a little cheaper that way...WRAP IT UP ! I then had them round up every end piece of lunch meat they had if it was a sort I liked. Each piece was wrapped in white paper and taped..Bought a few slices of smoked turkey for John, I also got a few small packages of different neat cheese...and some salt pork for me and Son...we just love it fried up crisp and lightly browned ! For supper that night we all sat in a circle and I opened each pkg. and passed them around so each one could take a sniff of the barely opened pkg. and write down what they thought it was.....I thought Son would be able to tell by smell better than he did....By the way, I didn't aim to include the salt pork in the guessing game ,but that got the biggest laugh of all...We divvied up the food and ate chunks of it with crackers and pickles....Now don't you think that was better than just plain old sandwiches ? The kids still mention it once in awhile...Maybe sometime when Buzz will be over there visiting I'll do that again.....John's girlfriend is sure to be there.....She should enjoy sharing one of his memories....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ On Mon, 6 Oct 2008 10:26:39 -0700 "Peace Roses" <Roses4831@msn.com> writes: . When the kids were still home, and we went on a car trip to somewhere, we would stop and get a loaf of bread, a package of bologna and a package of cheese. I would make the sandwiches. The choices the person had was bologna and cheese or cheese and bologna. What was the difference you ask? It was all in the way I handed the sandwich to the person. Cheese and bologna sandwiches had the cheese on top, bologna and cheese had the bologna had the bologna on top. I know, dumb, but we had fun with it. 3. Paulette...the old grocery stores got cheese shaped in a large "round wheel" called a hoop of cheese. It came in a round wooden box with a fitted lid. I still have one stamped with T.U.Crumpton" (The store where I worked for two years after school and on Saturdays.) The hoop of cheese, was covered with a thick red covering that held the oils inside and kept it from drying out...It was placed on the counter on a black iron "lazy Susan" looking holder with a cover too...The cover was removed, and the knife that was 'fixed' onto the bottom of the holder was raided and brought down, to cut into the desired amount.(cut through the covering which was always left on until eaten) Like a "wedge" of cheese. The measurements were on the turntable that held the cheese, up to a lb. I remember the store I worked in in the late forties...had one...and the men all came in from road work crews and got a small box of "soda" crackers, and a cut of cheese...usually 5 cents worth, a can or two of sardines, and a big RC drink(Rotal Crown), and sat on the ground under a tree for lunch. That was the norm for lunch...or add a chunk of bologna, that came in a big roll. .

I buy the 2 for a buck cards at Fred's Dollar store, and think they are wonderful !Comparable to a Hallmark ....Some are so pretty I buy a handful of the same design....I forget who I sent what to, but I figure they are as forgetful as I am and hardly anyone saves cards anymore...If they complain to me I'll just tell them not to worry, I won't send them one next time to clutter up their house.....I bought a book on making your own cards, but haven't tried it yet..I have everything to make reams of them with, but...just getting started....Jeannie T ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ On Thu, 02 Oct 2008 16:46:31 -0500 Judy Arnold <judith@omuonline.net> writes: > Stella, People are happy to be remembered with a card. They do not care where you bought it or what you paid for it. If so you are sending to the wrong people. 2. Peace Roses
    3. I have a niece who used to check on the back of the card to see how much the person paid for the card. If it isn't on there, she'll check at the store the next time she's there. Her mother was telling me this. I don't know if she still does this but she used to. I hope she's grown out of it by now. I'm just happy to get the card.
