    3. Yes, I certainly do agree with Kay & Paula. I think once you see how other people live in different countries..even on other islands, you realize how wonderful our country is!! When we were in Curacao (sp) all the homes there had fences around them. I guess neighbors would steal from each other. The people there really had a rough time of it. We were told to always wear nice clothes when we went into Willemstad to shop. The natives on the islands didn't want to see us in shorts of bermudas, They wanted us to dress up in dresses & things which made the women look nice. I had brought clothes that I could wear on the island. The island is owned by the Dutch & the first thing I expected to see Blond, Blue-eyed men & women there. Instead there were all very beautiful black people. They were so slow in doing things & it's almost a charm that they exhibit Paul & I decided to stop at a KFC for a bite to eat. I had on a sundress & sandles. The woman who was working at KFC looked as though she was going to church. High spike heels, a beautiful dress. She was clean & you could tell that she took care of herself. The people on this island were some of the most hospitable group I have met in a very long time. I remember one day we ended up in this French Restaurant. We kept seeing girls going up & down stairs which lead in to the building. It turned out that their building was a brothel. The people over there called those places "Happy Houses". Before we left our hotel, my husband gave the maid who had done such a nice job of keeping our beds changed & made up every day. Plus, if we asked her for something..we found it waiting for us when we got back to our rooms. He gave the maid $10.00 & she started crying. I guess that was a fortune to her. ~J in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "*paula*" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 5:30 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Travels.. > Hi Kay and all.... 3. Who knows, you just might make it there, yet. My pastor, in his new year's sermon, told us never to underestimate how our dreams could happen. He suggested that we all get passports because he felt that a lot of us would be going on missions trips this year. We had our passports renewed 2 years ago, so I'm ready when the right trip arises. Have you been to the Grand Canyon at sunrise and watched the colors change as the sun comes up? Have you sat on a Pacific Coast beach and watched the sunset? Have you been to the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings near Durango, Colorado? Very interesting. Have you been to the French Quarter in New Orleans and eaten a praline sold by a street vendor? Had a cup of coffee that will let the spoon stand alone? Just some of the things I remember. 3. hi Emma...and all... had to chuckle at the "hole" experience. I have seen such things and had similar experience. I was en route to Tampico, Mx. (taking a bus ride through Mexico) when the bus stopped for a potty/food break .... there actually were toilets but all were completely clogged with this, that, and the other.... the only paper was what locals brought with them for the purpose at hand. Having no recourse (in their minds) the very long sink was the only option..... and that was what they used.... women and children....old and young. Hey, gramma can't get up there - give her a boost!! I think the hole in the floor would have been an improvement over this. I went on back outside and found me a safe (if there was such a thing) spot for just a whizzer. That wasn't the worst place I ever had to potty in my travels..... ever use a communal potty house? egads!! Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become detached spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, 'It's their life,' and feel nothing? The nurse said, 'When they get out of the accident stage.' My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked incessantly, disrupted the class, and was headed for a career making license plates. As if to read my mind, a teacher said, 'Don't worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.' My dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle. There was nothing I could do about it.. My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. I continued to anguish over their failures, be tormented by their frustrations and absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my dad's warm smile and his occasional, 'You look pale. Are you all right? call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?' Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of human frailties and the fears of the unknown? Is concern a curse or is it a virtue that elevates us to the highest form of life? One of my children became quite irritable recently, saying to me, 'Where were you? I've been calling for 3 days, and no one answered I was worried.' I smiled a warm smile. The torch has been passed. PASS IT ON TO OTHER WONDERFUL PARENTS (And also to your children. 3. Hi freckle toes, missed your chats, glad to see you back. Are you keeping warm in cornpone, IN? That potty experience in Mexico is one that I could certainly do without. We just don't have any idea how fortunate we are in this country until you hear about how the rest of the world lives. 3. Heavens, sounds terrible. I'd be in a mess with just 3 sheets of toilet paper, can't believe how many rolls of t p we go through in a month. In a lot of foreign countries one must take toilet paper because it isn't furnished. Kay In a message dated 01/13/10 22:30:29 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Many restrooms/water closets did not separate the sexes, get in line for the next open toilet. Many had no seats. In Italy you paid 150 lira, handed three sheets of waxy toilet paper, a cheap paper towel . When you were ready to leave you were expected to tip the attendant sitting at a table by the exit. The Vatican museum did separate the sexes and didn't charge. Paris had individual ' toilets in the medians of some streets. They were small metal stands, you put two francs in the slot, music played and you waited until it stopped before opening the door. The toilet was being 'sterilized' for you. 3. That reminds me of my good friend. She is a missionary. One time she and another lady were in Africa and had gotten onto a bus to go to a different town. She said there were African warriors on there with their spears, and a diversity of people on the bus but they were the only females on there. The bus would stop periodically for a "potty" break. She said she and her friend would take turns waiting at the bus until the other one returned from the bush to make sure the bus didn't leave before they were both back on the bus. Emma > Date: Thu, 14 Jan 2010 14:45:56 +0000 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Travels.. > > hi Emma...and all... had to chuckle at the "hole" experience. That wasn't the worst place I ever had to potty in my travels..... ever use a communal potty house? egads!!
