    3. Belle.... one of my most favorite places was the French Quarter...and Cafe Dumonde... I still have a coffee cup from there that I've had so long the handle broke in one of my moves...but I still kept it. You sure have some wonderful memories....what would we do without those?? xoxoxo ~~~: ) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... time for the sand man! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Belle Shepherd" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 9:39:22 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Fwd: Travels.. Paula, I'm sure you have seen many things, been many places and certain things stick in your mind. They do with me. Have you been to the Grand Canyon at sunrise and watched the colors change as the sun comes up? Have you sat on a Pacific Coast beach and watched the sunset? Have you been to the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings near Durango, Colorado? Very interesting. Have you been to the French Quarter in New Orleans and eaten a praline sold by a street vendor? Had a cup of coffee that will let the spoon stand alone? Just some of the things I remember. Sent: Jan 14, 2010 6:27 PM Hey Belle..I have been to the Biltmore Home. I love the history of the surrounding area. That mountainous area was the 'cool summer' spot, for the rich and famous, mostly from the hot city of Nashville, but a lot of Chicago names are mentioned too.I saw pictures of hotels, etc that were there once, and a list of folks, who came there by stagecoach and carriages. we went gem mining close to there, in the small stream (I forgot the name ) and they handed out a brochure about the large gems found there...(I suppose it was true) We stayed at a new resort built next to Bald Mountain where an 18th century lodge had been. The corner stones were still in the ground. I took my young son on vacation there in 1984, hoping I could get him interested in junior golf. Friends took him to play golf a lot after his Dad died and he was really good. I bought the equipment...but he never really did it.I told him one day...he might have been a Tiger Wood and I might be rich! He just grunted! My brother Gene, is sick.X-rays showed a spot of pnumonia in left lung...but so far he is not in the hospital. Fever has not worsened. And Linda I made a mistake when I said '86 year old' He was born in 1925. So he is not that old. My sister is. I have been able to see much of it but not as much as I would like to see. never got to the new England states, Alaska or Hawaii. I have some favorite places that I would like to see again but know that I won't be able to do. I love Charleston, South Carolina. My paternal grandmother was born there .The old family homes were on Church Street and Atlantic Street, they are now on the list of homes in the tour, close to the Battery Park and the ocean. One of the homes is said to be haunted. Seems the great-grand parents kept a Bible on the table in the front hall for the use ofguests. They would take it to their room. In the morning they would look to take it back to the table, it would not be there because something had taken it and put it back on the table, no human hand had done it. I really like North Carolina, the scenery, the people, the food. Some of my ancestors lived there, the Lenoir family had a county named for them. The Biltmore House in Asheville is worth se Belle ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

    3. Dear Stella and all. I'm glad you liked my posts. I never kept many notes but I made lots of pictures. My memory has been pretty good up to now. Of course there are many things I would like to forget. 1978 we ordered a 35 ft. Kountry Aire 5th wheel and it done with all the extras, stack washer/dryer, air condioner, heater, etc. We bought a 3/4 ton XLT Ford pickup to pull it. We each took a month off from work and headed east from Orange Co. California. We went the Northen route to Ohio, down through Kentucy to North Carolina into Georgia where most of my family were living. We stopped many places along the way. We got on the bridge at the arch in St. Louis but couldn't get across because a cement mixer truck had an accident on the bridge. With help of the police and some other travelers we were 'backed' off the bridge and sent on another route.Got to Ohio, spent a couple of days with kin. All their neighbors made a tour of the 5th wheel. Got down to Hazard, Ky. and had a problem with the hitch. The man who fixed it was also a SHEPHERD, he refused payment, said he might be a cousin. We went on down into North Georgia, visited some of my kin. Everyone liked the 5th wheel. I was able to pick up some items I had stored at my dad;s. My antique maple bed and my grandmother'strunk. My aunt in North Georgia had given me two bushels of those great mountain apples. We had given some along the way but still had a lot left. We soon headed back to California. One rainy night we had parked in Van Horn, Texas with lots of apples. We gave some to the folks in the next space. Itold the lady that we would be going through the inspection station at Barstow and they would take my apples. She said no, we could avoid that by peeling and slicing the apples, putting them in lemon water in plastic containers and bags. Well, we worked a long time, she and husband helping. Guess what? When we got to Barstow, the Inspection Station was CLOSED!!!!!!!!! 3. I've kicked myself over and over that I didn't go on an Alaskan cruise several years ago. Bill Gaither takes people on an inland Alaskan cruise quite often. My girlfriend and her sister were going and when I found out about it, they kept encouraging me to go too. Even my kids kept after me to go. This was before my foot trouble, so I could still walk well. I was being too cautious and decided I didn't want to spend that much money, just to go on a cruise, even though I wanted to see Alaska and I thoroughly enjoyed the music Bill Gaither provided on one of his cruises. So, the Schooge side of me won, and I didn't go. It wasn't long after that that I started having my feet problems, now if I went, I would have to go in a wheelchair. So, my traveling days are over. How I wish I had gone with my girlfriend. That would have been a lot of fun, and I could have seen all the places I had been wanting to see.
