Kathi, thank goodness the smell of the paper mill is gone, but so are the jobs connected with it. That was hard for the workers. Yep, your hair will be a mess by the time the 48 hours is over, in fact, just a few hours of all those electrodes and hair has to be washed. Hope you get good results. Miss Emma is right abt OR.I take exception to crossing the border and you smell the difference.Maybe at one time it was that way because this part of CA was industry .So it may have stunk.Than there was little problem abt the spotted owl and the tree huggers etc.so now we have a 12 percent unemployment .But it doesn't stink .Well anyway no worse than anywhere else.OR does look and smell good. Kathi I admit...I wasn't thinking of football when I said that about the summers. But now that I usually resort to watching on TV...and most of my kids have lives of their own...I would have it made to be out there, if there are good doctors, it seems that is all I need now, good doctors. But really what I meant...was my lungs functioned better...the humidity was great, and the sea breeze and tempertures were wonderful.I walked to the beach in early morning, watched the sun come up sometimes...made friends with a lot of little creatures there, as they scrambled for food. I had to wear Gary's jacket, so I learned to fill the pockets with food for the birds. But I am not into antiques, or selling anymore. So life has really slowed. I could not make that beach walk now, or climb the hilly slopes. It is just a very pleasant memory. Stella

That was so long ago that I don't remember much about the trip. It was my first experience with Mexican food and I absolutely fell in love with it, the hotter the better. I also bought a wool serape (sp) which had been washed so much over the years that it finally disintegrated and had to be discarded last year. It was such a warm blanket to cuddle under and I miss it, hope to find another one. Only paid $10.00 for that one, sure the prices have greatly increased. Back then, $10.00 was a lot of money for a single girl, just out of school and starting a career to spend on anything. We also made a one day trip to Disney Land and I was blown away, never seen anything like it. Yes, Kay, that was one trip which I really enjoyed. We were both burnt out from working & we had gone to the travel agent with the request that they find us some place where we could just go & relax. We took Buffalo Air out of Chicago & that in itself was an experience. Somebody's back of their seat fell off half-way through the flight. Actually, once we got into Miami..it took a very short time for us to get there. Before they would let us deplane, they fumigated the whole plane & any luggage which people had on board with them. (We understood why they did that because when we went into town in the AM...people would have big slabs of fish & other fresh foods out for sale & not one fly or insect was around them.) We found out after we had been there for a few days that this island had very few tourists on it. The most these people saw of tourists was when people came off of ships which would dock at their ports for a few hours. There was only about 2-3 hotels on the island. I went looking for souvenirs & there were very few. I couldn't even find any postcards to send home. I finally found a really nice picture which was hand painted by an artist on the island. I bought that & brought it home & had it framed. We also visited a liquor factory on the island. That was the day that Paul & I had gotten too much sun (we had only stayed out 10 longer minutes than we usually did...but Curacao is right on the Equator. (The temps range from 82-83 degrees but there is a constant breeze, so you never feel the heat.) That day, we had taken a tour bus to go to the liquor factory. I was wearing a dress & Paul had on bermudas. We were fine when we were inside the bus...but the minute we would take a step off of the bus, the heat would hit us & we really felt our sunburn. We were suppose to go to a buffet that night..but we both stayed in our room. We were both so burned the we figured our vacation was over...plus, we couldn't even cover ourselves with a sheet. All of a sudden I got the bright idea that I had brought an after sun treatment that was mainly Aloe Vera. We got up & put that all over ourselves. The next day we were fine. We were on the island for 2 weeks. We did nothing but just relax. We met a couple of nurses from MN who taught us how to make our waste basket into a refrigerator. So when we were in town, we would pick up fresh cheese, something to drink & maybe some crackers. Then at night we would sit out on our patio & relax some more. One night Paul noticed that the leaves were 'moving' around us. He mentioned it to me, but I didn't see it. Later he told me that he had seen some cock roaches the size of larges leaves moving around us. I'm just as glad that I never saw that. I'm surprised that the roaches ended up at the hotel...but I guess the people did bring things that to their rooms...like we did. We had a complete album of when we were on that island. ~J in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 15, 2010 8:24 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Travels.. > Jen, sounds as though you really enjoyed your trip. Emma, maybe you can find somebody who would be willing to push you in the wheelchair. Kay In a message dated 01/15/10 01:58:16 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I've kicked myself over and over that I didn't go on an Alaskan cruise several years ago. Bill Gaither takes people on an inland Alaskan cruise quite often. My girlfriend and her sister were going and when I found out about it, they kept encouraging me to go too. Even my kids kept after me to go. This was before my foot trouble, so I could still walk well. I was being too cautious and decided I didn't want to spend that much money, just to go on a cruise, even though I wanted to see Alaska and I thoroughly enjoyed the music Bill Gaither provided on one of his cruises. So, the Schooge side of me won, and I didn't go. It wasn't long after that that I started having my feet problems, now if I went, I would have to go in a wheelchair. So, my traveling days are over. How I wish I had gone with my girlfriend. That would have been a lot of fun, and I could have seen all the places I had been wanting to see. I remember way back in the 60's going across the border into Tijuana with a group of young people and having all the fruit in our car taken. Kay In a message dated 01/15/10 01:57:55 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Dear Stella and all. I'm glad you liked my posts. I never kept many notes but I made lots of pictures. My memory has been pretty good up to now. Of course there are many things I would like to forget. 1978 we ordered a 35 ft. Country Aire 5th wheel and it done with all the extras, stack washer/dryer, air condioner, heater, etc. We bought a 3/4 ton XLT Ford pickup to pull it. We each took a month off from work and headed east from Orange Co. California. We went the Northen route to Ohio, down through Kentucy to North Carolina into Georgia where most of my family were living. We stopped many places along the way. We got on the bridge at the arch in St. Louis but couldn't get across because a cement mixer truck had an accident on the bridge. With help of the police and some other travelers we were 'backed' off the bridge and sent on another route.Got to Ohio, spent a couple of days with kin. All their neighbors made a tour of the 5th wheel. Got down to Hazard, Ky. and had a problem with the hitch. The man who fixed it was also a SHEPHERD, he refused payment, said he might be a cousin. We went on down into North Georgia, visited some of my kin. Everyone liked the 5th wheel. I was able to pick up some items I had stored at my dad;s. My antique maple bed and my grandmother'strunk. My aunt in North Georgia had given me two bushels of those great mountain apples. We had given some along the way but still had a lot left. We soon headed back to California. One rainy night we had parked in Van Horn, Texas with lots of apples. We gave some to the folks in the next space. Itold the lady that we would be going through the inspection station at Barstow and they would take my apples. She said no, we could avoid that by peeling and slicing the apples, putting them in lemon water in plastic containers and bags. Well, we worked a long time, she and husband helping. Guess what? When we got to Barstow, the Inspection Station was CLOSED!!!!!!!!! Jen, sounds as though you really enjoyed your trip. It is great to learn about other life styles and meet people from other countries. Kay In a message dated 01/14/10 22:26:07 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Yes, I certainly do agree with Kay & Paula. I think once you see how other people live in different countries..even on other islands, you realize how wonderful our country is!! When we were in Curacao (sp) all the homes there had fences around them. I guess neighbors would steal from each other. The people there really had a rough time of it. We were told to always wear nice clothes when we went into Willemstad to shop. The natives on the islands didn't want to see us in shorts of bermudas, They wanted us to dress up in dresses & things which made the women look nice. I had brought clothes that I could wear on the island. The island is owned by the Dutch & the first thing I expected to see Blond, Blue-eyed men & women there. Instead there were all very beautiful black people. They were so slow in doing things & it's almost a charm that they exhibit Paul & I decided to stop at a KFC for a bite to eat. I had on a sundress & sandles. The woman who was working at KFC looked as though she was going to church. High spike heels, a beautiful dress. She was clean & you could tell that she took care of herself. The people on this island were some of the most hospitable group I have met in a very long time. I remember one day we ended up in this French Restaurant. We kept seeing girls going up & down stairs which lead in to the building. It turned out that their building was a brothel. The people over there called those places "Happy Houses". Before we left our hotel, my husband gave the maid who had done such a nice job of keeping our beds changed & made up every day. Plus, if we asked her for something..we found it waiting for us when we got back to our rooms. He gave the maid $10.00 & she started crying. I guess that was a fortune to her. ~J in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "*paula*" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 5:30 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Travels.. > Hi Kay and all.... what does that word RECLAST mean ??? My doctor insisted on it, and even though I had some reservations about it; you know how you have that inner intuition when something isn't right? Well, I've been extremely sick since then: a kidney infection that won't go away, headaches, dizziness, nausea, some vomiting, and now I think my heart may be involved. It does an Irish jig in my chest from time to time, so I'm seeing a cardiologist next week. If you know anyone contemplating this infusion, tell them NOT TO DO IT! About 40 people have died from complications and four times that many have had to hospitalized in serious condition. Why won't they be honest about these drugs?? > > I know I promised you a long, newsy letter, Belle, but I just haven't felt well enough to keep that promise. I answer my emails and then go back to bed! Hopefully, I will do better! I'm sorry I let you down!
