Natalie, looking forward to hearing from you again. Wonder how many more people out there who are "lurking", we might all be surprised. Kay In a message dated 01/17/10 20:39:36 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I'm sure no offense was intended since I have never made a comment or post to this group. I have read the many posts with religious connotations (as well as the political) throughout the past several months. As someone else said, since I have never spoken then I have no right to comment on past conversations. Although I don't agree, I will agree. I am quite familiar with Jesus of Nazareth. It just seemed odd to me (for no particular reason today than any other day) for someone to say "where would jesus be". Then thinking back on some of the other correspondence making reference to jesus, I wondered if anyone ever considered that some people don't wonder where jesus would be or what would jesus do. I have enjoyed immensely some of the chatter until religion in interjected. Likewise with politics. Thank you for allowing me to contribute. In a way this conversation is amusing in that I was telling a friend about the "what would jesus do" remark. She, being a Wiccan, said she wo! ! uld ask "what would Mother Nature do", then went on to say that we pretty much saw what she would do. I thought this very interesting. Again, thank you for inviting me in. I really don't think that anyone was trying to offend you by mentioning the name "Jesus". Many times the members of this group ask for prayer for what is going on in our lives and we tell each other that we will keep them in our prayers. You have a wonderfully rich heritage coming from a long line of Jews. The foundation of our Christian faith is based upon Jewish beliefs. There are so many things in common with the two faiths, the main difference being that the Jews are still looking for their Messiah to come and we believe that He came in the form of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Simply stating fact, not proselytizing Some of the greatest hope I see is when leaders from various faiths come together to pray for each other, for their communities and for the nations of the world. This members of the Southern Chat group have many "southern" things in common, but we have profound differences politically. Still we can be civil to each other, express our views and agree to disagree on many topics. Please feel free to express your feelings and views and enter into the conversation. I would be more that happy to have any member of this group in my home, even though we have very different views on some things. Kay In a message dated 01/17/10 11:39:52 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hi there. I've been lurking for a while but thought I would add a little something because I read a line after someone's name that I feel is not appropriate to this particular list. I will make this brief and in no way intend to offend or upset anyone. I am referencing the line "where would Jesus be". To me, this is inappropriate (at least to this list) because not everyone believes in "Jesus". One might even consider this type of statement to be an attempt at proselytizing. I come from a long line of Jews but myself am agnostic. It might make for better relations and friendships if the religious connotations were left off. Thanks for considering this. Golly Kay, I just took it for granted that there would be a useable runway! I didn't know that the port had been destroyed until yesterday. We have an aircraft carrier just off the coast. When they saw the airport, they decided to use helicopters to ferry to shore what they could. I was so surprised to learn that the Chinese were among the very first country to arrive. They were so appreciative of the countries that sent help to them after their awful earthquake. Good deeds breed other good deeds, sometimes from surprising places and people. Yes, it sounds good & we do eat a lot of chicken..so I'm sure I will be using it. I know I have a good potluck dish in my recipes. My mother always called it Spanish Spaghetti & it seemed like everyone always liked it. I also have a good recipe from when I was doing my student teaching. One of these days I'll get on the ball & post a couple of casseroles. If I would make Spanish Spaghetti, I'm sure my husband would be very happy. (The reason I haven't given out recipes..other than the white chili one, is because I have to type everything out & sometimes my eyes just give out on me.) Even with that White Chili one, I learned a good lesson..was amazed when Stella told me about all the ones on the Internet. For all I know, many of my recipes may be on the Internet. ~J in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roses" <[email protected]> To: "southern-chat" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 17, 2010 3:58 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Chicken casserole I'm glad everyone liked it. Hi Natalie and welcome to the list. Good grief!!! Remember the WWJD item that we used to see so much? There are people starving to death or dying under rubble in Haiti, in our country of riches, in every part of the world. That same phrase has been used here on this list. Jesus would - I'm sorry. I can't talk about...I have always thought that using an example of someone whom one believes to be remarkable gives one a standard by which to judge their actions and thoughts. By the way, my closest childhood friend is Jewish. One of the most important people in my life is a practicing Jew and believes Jesus is the most remarkable person who ever lived and speaks of Jesus with the upmost respect. One could learn much from Jesus about how we should treat others. Tolerance is one of the many lessons...I'm sorry. I better not say anything else. I would express my concern to Emma and let her know that she has one more person praying for her - but I guess that would get me into even more trouble. My fil died from kidney failure after he made the decision to stop his dialysis. He was calm and did not suffer. Dialysis just wore him out after several years. He lived longer than his doctors thought he would. I pray that Emma's family & friends will be supportive of her decision, whatever it may be. I always thought that praying for one another is one of the most precious gifts we could give to another. If we can't express our care and concerns about others, as many faiths teach, I'm gone. One thing that makes this list special is that we do care about others and that we can express it here whereas it would be 'forbidden' in other places. Is this our list mommies trying to wash my mouth with soap? If that's the case, then so be it and I'm thrown off the list. I might be wrong, but I believe that there are many people here who care about others and who are thankful that we can speak of our faith and how faith sustains us as individuals. I can always reach my friends by private email and I can't be barred from reading what's written here. It is great that Clinton and Bush are heading up an aid program for Haiti. In times of crises people put political views aside and work together for the common good. >From the pictures of Port Au Prince it looked like a lot of multiple dwelling housing. It's too bad that it was not more earthquake "proof" (if there is such a thing). But you can be sure that out of town and in the country side, many people lived in nothing more than 4 corner posts and anything available (fabric, tin, cardboard, etc.) nailed or tied from one corner to the other. Even roofs might be a combination of cardboard and tree branches. When we were in the D R, I was shocked at the housing and Haiti is much poorer than the D.R.. It will take of lot of work to replace housing for that many people. Will they have Prefab, quickly built homes ? Will they put up barracks? Will the debris pushed into the ocean make new land and who will own it ? Would NOW be a good time to build it up into a tourist attraction , where the folks make their money off the tourist trade ? They said it was 80 degrees over there....sounds great to me ! The situation does seem really bad in Haiti. Everyone has been elated at the number of people found alive even after this many days. There is only one airport but at least the runway wasn't damaged so that is a big plus. It takes time to get supplies together and an organized plan between all countries put into place. I'm really amazed at how quickly some things have taken place. Kay In a message dated 01/16/10 23:42:09 Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hello all, I have been watching CNN and the terrible reports on the damage and loss of lives. It must be the worse natural disaster since the Vesuvius volcano destroyed Pompei in 79 A.D. Where are all these going to go and how will they survive? How can they find their own families? Dead or alive? So much destruction that will never be cleared or repaired. So many people without homes. Food, water and needed facilities may be scarce as well. Bush, Cllinton and Obama say they are going to help. I hope they follow through and it is not just false promises as has happened with other things. I received this recipe from my sister who was a renowned cook in her area. She swears by it, keeps a casserole in her freezer all the time for when company drops by. Emma Chicken Spaghetti ½ green pepper, chopped 3 stalks celery, chopped 1 small onion, chopped 4 Tblsp parsley 1 ½ cup chicken broth 2 ½ cups 2-inch spaghetti pieces 1 lb Velveeta cheese, chopped 2 cans mushroom soup 1 small jar pimiento, chopped 4 cups cooked chicken ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper Cook vegetables in chicken broth until tender. Cook spaghetti, drain. Mix hot spaghetti with 2/3 chopped cheese. Add soup, vegetables, broth, pimiento, chicken, salt and pepper. Mix well. Divide mixture into 2 buttered 9" x 12" casseroles. Cover top of mixture with remaining cheese. Cover with foil. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. This is from my sister, Ozela Haynes. She makes this all the time and said it freezes well. _________________________________
