I was chubs in school. I started working at a hospital and worked with special diet-that is when I started losing weight-I did not have an appetite. Every night my daddy had a big meal for the family. He would always ask me what I wanted to eat the next night-so I guess that he cooked for me. I love oreos also. 3. Anna Marie/Shorty, No, I didn't know your chiropractor. I'm surprised b/c we moved to Wheaton in 1944 (the year I was born). Wheaton College is a wonderful college. It's not that easy to get into. When I was checking out colleges..which was back in the early 60's, you needed nearly a straight A average to get in there. They very particular about the students who they would accept at their college. Many good things to say for that. (I apologize if I cut someone off..when I read Anna's message..wanted to answer before I forgot.) ~Jen in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anna Marie Rahfeldt" <shorty6337@hotmail.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 30, 2010 4:24 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] the Welcome Wagon > > Hi Kay, nice to meet you also. > Hi Paula-I bet you welcome wagon won't be coming back but if they did > maybe via email. > Hi Jen, > I was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois-my brother-in-law and sister > went to College in Wheaton, Illinois-she studied history and he was in > Theology. 3. Anna Marie, It would appear as though we are past neighbors. I tried to tidy up all the messages & I accidentally deleted yours. I think I remember basically the high points of your message. You asked when I attended school in Ames & that would have to be in 1967-68. I graduated from college in 1969..and I know that it was fairly soon after I had attended Ames. I was so excited...thought I would be in advertising..loved to draw & design. That school put me to shame. There were so many talented people there. I remember I dated an civil engineer who was going to school there. They were doing some work on campus & Loren would tell me that what was going on & oftentimes it was the company who he was working for that was doing the work. Aurora is a hop, skip & a jump from Wheaton. My Grandmother was in a retirement home over there called Plumb Landing. It was on Lake St & I remember driving over & taking her to lunch. My Grandmother would look at me & say "You are going to drive me??" I had pretty much grown up by then, but I guess I was still her little Granddaughter. Loved those chimes. I would walk through the campus & those beautiful chimes would ring. Had many people in my family who went to Ames. My Aunt went there, her daughter went there & if I'm not mistaken, her son went there. My parents were born & grew up in Hampton, IA. My Mother would tell me how she & her family would sit around the radio on the weekends to listen to the radio station straight from Ames. So sorry to hear about the water damage there. I was not in the area where they played basketball..but I know what water can do to a wood floor. After I had taught for several years I got the bright idea that I didn't have to work. Turned out that we counted on my paycheck more than I realized. After I quit teaching, the jobs were not that prevalent. I did some part time work..some substituting, etc. However, I really wanted to get into a regular full time job. I had a choice between being a dispatcher for a police department or an insurance claims adjuster. B/c the hours were not that regular with the police department..I would work a full time one day & the next I would be on their grave yard shift. I accepted the job with the insurance company. I spent 14 yrs working for them. Would have spent longer..but there was quite a bit of turn-over in our company & some of the gals were not the nicest in the world. I had worked for a police dept before & found that men were so much easier to work with than women. So I gave then notice & left two weeks afterwards. Since then I have had many health issues. I have spent the last 9-10 yrs between hospitals, nursing homes & rehab hospitals. I can only hope & pray that I will not start to have problems again b/c I'm 66 yrs old & am not looking forward to this health care bill which is looming over all of us senior citizens. If what I have been through had happened during the time that they had this upcoming bill, I probably wouldn't be around today. So I do feel that I have a reason to be on earth. Well, I have said enough, so I'm going to end. Welcome to Southern-Chat. I think you will enjoy being on this list, Anna/Shorty. Oh yes, we never had The Welcome Wagon come to visit us when we moved up to Payson, AZ. We had previously lived in Fountain Hills, AZ & they hadn't visited us there either. Just the one time in Wheaton, IL. I got some coupons & other things. I don't know if I ever used what they gave me. I just felt it was only right they come to our home. It was the first home that we had ever owned...thus, I thought the Welcome Wagon should visit me. I think b/c people are so transient, they don't have the Welcome Wagon like they used to. Have a wonderful Tuesday!!! :-) Blessings, ~Jen in AZ >> > >> >> Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. 3. Hey Shorty, Welcome to the list... I'm MaryClyde and I live in the Piedmont of South Carolina. We've had some terribly hot weather this summer! I guess that's why they call it "summer". We don't have a welcome wagon way out here in the boondocks! I don't think they even have it in the nearby town. Take care and let us hear from you again! 2. Anna Marie Rahfeldt
    3. Hey MaryClyde, it sure is good to meet you and the others. I know a Belle Shepherd on here and Jeanne (askgranny) from KYFolklore. It sure is good to be on here. I talk with Paula a lot-I enjoy that-I am sure blessed with her friendship. One day a boyfriend called the house, at my parents, and he asked for Shorty-my daddy didn't like that but I don't mind. We had the flood-Ames, Iowa. we had a hard time finding a way out of Ames-and people had a hard time finding a way in. So we were in really bad shape. The Iowa State University basketball court was under water-that was so sad to see. We are doing okay-water has gone down. We did have to boil our water for a couple of days. 3. Hi *Paula*!! Sounds like me. I was always skinny. I was a bit taller..5'8". Then with age, I have lost 2 inches. And of course with age, weight is so easy to put on. When we were dancing 5 times or more per week, I was nice & slim. I even had a 23" waist. That wasn't that long ago either. :-( ~Jen in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "*paula* SW FlaUSA" <freckletoes@comcast.net> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 30, 2010 6:18 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] re The welcome wagon/shorty/skinny > Hell o o o o Shorty and all..... 3. Hi Kay, nice to meet you also. Hi Paula-I bet you welcome wagon won't be coming back but if they did maybe via email. Hi Jen, I was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois-my brother-in-law and sister went to College in Wheaton, Illinois-she studied history and he was in Theology. Yes Iowa State has that Campanile bell-it is really a beautiful campus-the Hilton Colisium got flooded-that is where ISU has their basketball games. What year did you go to ISU? 3. Checked out your list, MaryClyde..thanks for going to the trouble to send it. We had just bought a dozen eggs & my husband was going to trash them. Thank goodness he didn't..b/c those eggs were not on your list. ~J ----- Original Message ----- From: "MaryClyde" <maryclyde@comporium.net> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 4:24 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Egg Recall > Hmmm... 3. Carol... thought I would add this on. I don't know what anyone would do to protect big things that have micro-chips or other elements that would be fried like a chicken leg if we got blasted with and EMP (from nuke or sun flares). I guess initially cars would be stuck on the roads, most things would just come to a standstill - at least for a time. If the pulse would be minor - maybe not much damage. We do get solar storms all the time that interfere with our cell phone reception but not enough to cook them. So, inconvenient interruption to minor damage to total fry-dom. All depends on how much of a blast. Cars in underground garages might be ok. Some things are "hardened" and won't be effected.....probably nothing the ordinary citizen will have but I would bet the government has it's act together or is trying anyway. Unfortunately there are other issues as well. Like for instance, if a person were really into electromagnetic physics, they could create an Ebomb for not a whole lot of money using ordinary junk. We got the big wake up call on 9/11..... paula in sw fla usa......just trying to prepare as best I can for I don't know what xoxoxo ----- Original Message ----- From: "carol hall" <carol_hall69@yahoo.com> To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 5:31:17 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] Hello Paulett and all ! 3. Paula, I never knew that about sun flares. They claim that we have sun spots out here..but I am not sure whether or not they are similar or not. It seems like when we have problems with our TV (we have cable) we are told it's b/c of the sun spots. How's your weather? I'm glad to be back home where the weather is at least bearable. I couldn't believe it when we got out of the car in temps of 117. The place where we stayed had a beautiful pool & oh, how I wished we have brought our swimming suits.
