Took a little trip to a mall in Sarasota. Just wanted to take a gander at what's going on around these parts. Anyhoo..... we're walking, talking, and sippin' java when I spy an "eyebrow salon". Yip. Just eyebrows - nothing else. They have a fancy sign in the winder and a video playing that shows various way a person can get their eyebrow hairs yanked out. Apparently these days, eyebrows are so important they can be shaped in different "patterns". There are even stencils!! Eyebrow stencils!! What?? Ok,,,For the "base price" of $50.00 (that's ten, twenty, thirty, fourty, FIFTY) some young made-up and costumed (think halloween) chikkie will take string, whip it around each tiny little eyebrow hair and twist it out of your head! I'm not kiddin' neither - and neither are they! Of course if you want a "pattern" the cost is more. I thought up my own cheap and painless way to shape up my brow hairs. I took some peanut butter and very carefully put it on the hairs I didn't want anymore. Then I got all comfy and called over Goober the bichon. didn't take him two seconds to gnaw off those peanut butter covered hairs!! Unfortunately, Goober didn't care if the hairs were covered with peanut butter or not....he just went to town on all of 'em..... I now have bald brows! paula in sw fla usa.......maybe I can start a new craze?? xoxoxo

Hi Shorty, Had a dear Big Sister in my college sorority. She bought me a ring with two hands clasped together. When you opened up the hands, there was a heart. I really cared about my Big Sister so much..but things happened beyond my control & I have lost track of her. It's a long story, so I won't got into it..but I would love to get in touch with Carolyn again. Carolyn also gave me a gold charm bracelet & any time there was a special occasion, she would give me a square charm with the occasion engraved on the square. I really miss her & wish I could find her again. It has been many years though, so the chances of me finding her are very slight. Someone thought they had found her in FL b/c she had posted an address in an alumni book which we all received from Hillsdale College, in Hillsdale, MI. By the time I got a letter off to her, she had either moved or refused to accept my letter. I got it back. Makes me feel very badly at times when I think of her & not being able to find her again. ~Jen in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "jkaywojack" <jkaywojack@aol.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 05, 2010 6:37 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] re > Yes, Shorty, friendship is a blessing, but they take work to cultivate. > Kay > > > > In a message dated 09/03/10 22:39:51 Central Daylight Time, > shorty6337@hotmail.com writes: > > From: shorty6337@hotmail.com > To: fromtheghetto@rocketmail.com > Subject: RE: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] re > Date: Fri, 3 Sep 2010 22:23:29 -0500 > > > > > > > > > Hi Everyone on Southern Chat. > > Thank you for the welcome to > southern chat. Hello Anna Marie aka Shorty, Wheaton College is a Christian college. Billy Graham did attend there. There were many buildings on campus which were named after him. Until he became so disabled with Parkinson's Disease (I'm pretty sure that is what he has wrong with him), Billy would come back to the college to speak on numerous occasions. When I was younger, my Father was Mayor of Wheaton & I remember my Father & Mother were invited to the college to hear Billy speak. He was & still is a very dynamic speaker. His son has pretty much taken up where he left off. I believe he also has a daughter, Ann? who does some public speaking too. If I'm not mistaken, he is at home in N.C. now. I'm thinking he's in Ashville...but that's merely a guess on my part. That's too bad that you were unable to go into nurses training. My husband's oldest sister wanted to do that; however, there were 11 children in the family & the oldest girls were asked to quit school & go to work in order to help the family out. Since Rose was the oldest, she was asked to quit first. Then Angie wanted to quit school after Rose had been out for about 8 months. By then she felt it was too soon to go back & she has always said if she had finished High School, she would have been a nurse. Knowing Rose like I do, she would be a good nurse. My husband, Paul, who was the oldest boy, had always worked 2 jobs starting when he was in Junior High. After they lost their Mother at the age of 39 yrs with her 12th child, she passed away & then Paul had to go to work full time. Their Father had a good job. He just didn't know how to handle money. Dorothy, his wife, had always handled the money in the family. Copley Memorial Hospital is a very good hospital. I'm sure working around all the nurses, made you want to be a nurse even more. Well, I guess sometimes things happen for a reason. Just the fact that you bonded with that 4 yr old little girl..sounds as though you made a big difference in her life. Just the fact that you spent the time with her, I'm sure, meant a great deal to her. You sound like me. Years after I had taught 3rd & 4th grade I ran into one of the girls which I had in my class & even though I recognized her & she confirmed that she was the same child, I couldn't believe that she was now grown up & even had a family of her own. My, how time passes so quickly!! I ended up going to Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI. It's a privately own college & has been in the news lately. I didn't graduate from there. It seemed like I had spent so much time away from home. I had gone to a private boarding school in WI in place of High School in Wheaton & all I wanted to do is spend some time at home. Finally I came back to Wheaton, worked for a while & finally signed up at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, IL. That's where I graduated from with a BA in Education & English. (Right off hand I believe my minor was English..but I graduated in 1969 & that seems so long ago.) Well, I hope that the rain doesn't do any damage this time. We are suppose to be going through our monsoon season out here in AZ...but things are so dry. Of course, our biggest fears are forest fires. When we lived in the Valley in Fountain Hills, AZ, we experienced our first desert fire. It started off some distance from us & it continued to spread until it went through a wonderful forest preserve. There were so many cacti lost. Many people do not realize how long it takes for certain cacti to grow. I know we were very concerned when we saw the fire coming at us. We had a TV truck parked out in front of our house & we stood there almost mesmerized. Paul & I discussed what we should take with us. I knew that I wanted to keep pictures & of course our beloved Chelsea (our West Highland White Terrier along with her dog food)..we kept vacillating on what to take with us. The fireman did a back burn on the fire & it turned away from us. We had ashes on the roof of our house as well as in our swimming pool. Right now, we are surrounded by a public forest preserve...so if someone is careless...we very well could end up with a fire where we live. Well, I have to scoot. Paul wants me to watch the History Channel with him. They have a pretty good show on there about dust storms. I told him that we would check out "The Grape's of Wrath" next time we go to the library. Take care now & blessings to you. ~Jen in AZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anna Marie Rahfeldt" <shorty6337@hotmail.com> To: <southern-chat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 31, 2010 6:31 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] welcome wagon/shorty > > > > > Jen, > > We were past neighbors. > We moved to Ames, Iowa 1976-we bought a house in 1975 and rented it out > for a year. > Yes from Wheaton it was a hop, skip and a jump to Aurora. Belle, You sound like you are saying good-bye & I have news for you, you are not going to get away from So-Chat that easily!! You are such an interesting person & I have learned so much from you. The stories of your travels, made me feel as though I was with you vicariously. I probably will not get to all the places which you have been too..but your stories really made things come to life for me. I think that many of us are wondering what is going to happen to American b/c of the crazy politics which have been transpiring. Paul, my husband, & myself have been trying to get ourselves as ready as possible if something should happen up here in the mountains. We experienced the hottest summer that we have ever had since we moved up here over 12 yrs ago. Our winter before that was pretty cold too. How was your weather in NV this year? I know years before I had ever been to NV, I always thought it was warm/hot 24/7. I found out that wasn't the case. We used to come to Las Vegas when we had the money to gamble. I know at night, it would get chilly & I know I was glad that I brought a sweater with me for the night. One year we drove to Reno & that was in Oct. It was really quite chilly up there. We made many stops on our way up there & coming back. We really enjoyed Virginia City. We went to it one day & then stayed over night close by so we could go back the next day & spend more time there. On our way out to NV, we had tried to stop at Branson, MO...we were unable to do so, b/c that's when they were converting Silver Dollar City into a place where country western singers would be able to come & entertain. How is Jennifer doing? How old is she now, Belle? I will always remember you telling me that your Granddaughter's name was Jennifer. Well, I best end for now. Blessings to you & your family in NV. Like I said, you are not going to get away that easily. I know that many folks will continue to write you & send you various information. You are a very beloved person on the So-Chat as well as other lists. Hello all you good folks, I am still here living with my daughter and grandaughter. Not doing very well as my old age ailments seem to be taking over and gettin the upper hand. My 88th birthday is coming up soon. I want to thank all of you for sharing your stories, feelings, ideas, advice , pictures and all. We have all had bad times and good times, I have had my shae of both. On this race track called life, I feel that I am on the last few laps with many pit stops for repairs. It has been an interesting 80 plus years. Different jobs, several moves, a chance to meet great people and make lifetime friends. I was able to travel and see many eautiful things that most can only read about. I wish all of you well and hope our America survives the quaggmire of polotics and stupid powers currently in charge. Also hope everyone will be prepared for a possible colder winter with a shortage of some items. Take care of yourselves and your families, let them know that they are loved, they need that sense of trust and security. My very best to all. Belle
Jen, We were past neighbors. We moved to Ames, Iowa 1976-we bought a house in 1975 and rented it out for a year. Yes from Wheaton it was a hop, skip and a jump to Aurora. My brothers family is still living in that area. My husband, Dale, and I went to see them the end of July. I hadn't seen them for over 12 years. I surely miss them. Now isn't Wheaton College affiliated with Billy Graham Evan? I hope that you found a good college. So some of your relatives went to ISU-that is a good College. I wanted to go into Nurses Training but my health kept me out. the doctor didn't think that was for me because of my health. I worked at Copley Memorial Hospital in the diet kitchen-I served patients up their special diets. I also took menus to patients on the different floors-I met such wonderful patients and nurses. There was one little girl, she was 4 years old, she had rheumatic fever-that little girl was so sad. Well I started going up to see her every day even on my day off-one day the nurse said that they were so glad to see me because the little girl was so unhappy giving them lots of trouble. That little girl and I became really close-I would sit down and play with her-color. I would buy her little things-coloring book, crayons. We talked a lot. I was 16 years old then. I guess that she was always happy to see me-she always had a big smile on h er face when I came in. One day my husband and I were at the grocery store and I saw her, she was grown up, and she remembered me. Hey it is storming here right now-we need the rain-but I hope that it doesn't cause another flood. It sure is good to be on here with such wonderful and fun people. Hell o o o o Shorty and all..... I was never short. Have been 5'7" since 5th grade and I sure was skinny. Boy oh boy, those were the days. Only wish I fit the description of "skinny" now - those days are long gone. paula in sw fla usa....hey, pass me the oreos! xoxoxo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anna Marie Rahfeldt" <shorty6337@hotmail.com> To: southern-chat@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, August 30, 2010 8:29:56 PM Subject: [SOUTHERN-CHAT] re The welcome wagon Hey MaryClyde, it sure is good to meet you and the others. I know a Belle Shepherd on here and Jeanne (askgranny) from KYFolklore. It sure is good to be on here. I talk with Paula a lot-I enjoy that-I am sure blessed with her friendship. One day a boyfriend called the house, at my parents, and he asked for Shorty-my daddy didn't like that but I don't mind. We had the flood-Ames, Iowa. we had a hard time finding a way out of Ames-and people had a hard time finding a way in. So we were in really bad shape. The Iowa State University basketball court was under water-that was so sad to see. We are doing okay-water has gone down. We did have to boil our water for a couple of days. It sure is good to meet all of you. thank you for accepting me on here.
