I know that many of you on these lists, if you've worked with the records of Cumberland Co at all, know Randolph Smith. I was privileged to meet him only one time at our bookfair here in Glasgow, several years ago. I've used his material so much in the last 20 years - the transcriptions of the source documents he did for Cumberland Co is almost all there is for us researchers. Joyce Stover on our SCKY list sent me this announcement which I am posting as she wrote it. Sandi, you may have heard that Laura Butler's dad, Randolph Smith, died yesterday afternoon. Visitation is at Ballou and Stotts Funeral Home today after 3, and again tomorrow. The funeral will be at 2 tomorrow at the Burkesville Methodist Church where he was a long-time member. Randolph was a wonderful genealogist and abstracted many, many county records that would otherwise have been lost. Over the years, he answered thousands of queries and to my knowledge, never charged anyone for anything he did for them. He donated his vast collection of books and files to the local library, and the genealogy department has been named "The Randolph Smith Genealogy Library". Randolph was a former mayor Burkesville and held a state office in the KY. Historical Society. There is much more that could be said about him, but he was a modest man and would not want all his accolades to be listed. I haven't talked with Laura personally to see about memorial contributions, but my husband and I will donate to the library genealogy dept. in his memory. If you don't mind, let the listers know so they can post messages of sympathy to Laura and her family. Cumberland Co. has lost one of its finest citizens! Thanks! Joyce >From Sandi - you may send email messages of condolence to Laura at: butler@duo-county.com Many of you who have attended our book fair have met Laura; she hasn't missed a year. She has been re-publishing many of her Dad's book and is a friend to man.
