Washington Post, 17 July 1937. "Ky. Bank Robber Seized by G-Men On Indiana Farm. "Reuben PAYNE, 29, gunman who robbed a bank at Summer Shade, Ky., June 29 and escaped after a gun battle with local police, was captured by Federal agents yesterday on a farm belonging to his step-father 5 miles from Delpha, Ind., it was announced by the federal bureau of Investigation. He was en-route to Louisville, Ky., last night for arraignment before a United States commissioner. "Payne entered the Summer Shade bank alone, armed with two .38-caliber revolvers, and took cash totaling $500. On leaving the bank he ran into police officers, emptied both revolvers at them and escaped into the woods. Payne's two companions, Elmore Huntley and Fred Perkins, were waiting in a car, but were captured. "Search for Payne was taken up by Federal agents and led to his discovery at the farm. Agents from the Indianapolis office of the F.B.I. raided the residence late yesterday afternoon and took Payne without a shot. Payne was unarmed. "Payne served two terms in the Kentucky State Reformatory. "Perkins and Hunley are being held at the Louisville jail in $25,000 bond, harged with bank robbery and conspiracy to rob the Summer Shade bank." No information was given as to where Payne resided.
