    1. SCKY CULTURAL CENTER - ACT II

    3. Ok gang, bear with me! I needed to run down to the Cultural Center this morning and while there, I went up on the 2nd floor to view the General Store I mentioned yesterday. I took me awhile to get to it; I had a lot of displays to see along the way - the military displays, the one-room school house, the funeral parlor, the doctor's office, the bank, the kitchen (which dated me - I remember a lot of the things there!) ... and finally I worked my way back to the General Store which one can walk through. It is fabulous, down to an authentic ledger book, supplies, toys, counters ... I felt I could walk back in time. I told Gayle Berry, Director, if they would let me watch one tv program a day, sneak me in a microwave oven, I could literally move in! In talking to Gayle we were discussing that this museum operates at no charge to the public, depending on donations made at the front desk. Most everything in the museum has been donated and reflects various periods of history of south central KY. They are always in need of and looking for things to add to their displays. Gayle graciously gave me a list of some of the things they would like to find. If you have anything on this list or something you'd be willing to donate, I know the museum would be grateful. You can call Gayle at 1-888-256-6941 (locally 270-651-9792); fax her at 270-651-2806 or send her an email at sckculturalcenter@glasgow-ky.com. Here's what they are looking for: Cider barrel, boot jack, reel to wind or measure yarn, old sampler, wooden wash tub, metal signs for a general store (before 1940), ink well and staff pin for bank, nice oil lamp for the Victorian room, calendar for bank (early 1900's), picture of the Caverna Grill, picture of Star or Twin City Drive in, old gas pump for service station with glass top, old cartridge boxes for 12 gauge shot gun and .22 rifle, coal grate for fire place, fire place tools, forged shovel to remove ashes from stove for the schoolhouse, 30, 40 and 50's small household appliances, music box from the early 1900's, cave memorabilia for Crystal Onyx, Sand Cave and Diamond Caverns), items from funeral homes such as fans, colanders, programs, memorial books. While there, I browsed for a few in the genealogy room where there are the holdings of our historical society and the cultural center. Mary, a wonderful volunteer there, said they are receiving more family books and files for the vertical files; the genealogy room is busting at the seams! The genealogy books belonging to the society and my books which were in the public library are there and new covers, replacement pages etc made due to the heavy wear and tear they had experienced. There's a big table in this room and a copy machine ... one can spend hours researching happily away while the family, maybe not as interested in family tree shaking, can take a tour of the museum. I just had to give a few plugs to the cultural center, museum and the people there; this is something that we are very proud of; it is professionally done, located just off the square, free parking and convenient to many eating spots. But it's the warmth of the people who work and volunteer here that make it so special to us. Maybe your next trip to Glasgow will allow time to stop by and say hello! I am not connected with the cultural center ... but, as I said, I'd be most happy to take up residence there!
