I did a search for Viola Smith on the 1850 census since her name isn't as common as Nancy and Allen. No luck. I did Allen but none for Barren old enough to be a father. Since Metcalf wasn't established in 1860 I checked out other counties for an Allen. I found an Allen 35 yrs old, Sarah 34 yrs old, Eliza C 13 yrs old, Jonathan 12 yrs old, "Nancy A 10 yrs old", Martha E 8 yrs old, Margaret C 5 yrs old, Robert L 2 yrs old, and Francis J 1/12 months all living in Clinton Co, KY, district 1 on page 17 of 56 on Ancestry in 1850. Barren Co., KY was formed from Green and Warren Co.,KY in 1799. Clinton County was formed from Cumberland and Wayne Counties in 1836. Metcalfe Co., KY was formed from Adair, Barren, Cumberland, Green and Monroe Counties in 1860. All these counties are connected. This census would take in the father as Allen and Nancy A born about 1839. There is an Allen Smith in Barren in 1850 but he's 17 and living with his parents. You may want to check into that.
