Just a heads up for your information. This Thursday and the following Thursday, I will be posting a 2-part series on Hening's Statutes of VA ... which had a lot to say about the county of Kentucky. These statutes were used as the basis for our early KY laws and there are some interesting statutes in the VA records including forming of Kentucky County VA, payment in land there for the soldiers and officers of the Rev War, the establishment of Boonesboro and Louisville - and some special notations about the Virgnians who had already settled in this "dangerous land" facing attacks by the Indians and their needs. Then for the next three weeks I'm running a "mini series" on Miss Jennie Wiley of VA and Johnson Co KY. If you're over 60, you might remember the very old black and white movie serial, "The Perils of Pauline." Well, no one faced perils like Jennie Wiley. This goes back to the earliest fort days in Kentucky (still a county of VA) - her capture by the Indians and her 11 month attempt at escape. We have the Cherokee, Shawnee, Wyandot and other tribes all banded together determined to make her a nice Indian wife or teacher of the wives of the chief. And what she lost would bring tears to the most hard- hearted. After working on Jennie's story, I cannot fathom what the early settlers went through, especially those who were captured by the native Americans. Whether you have any connections to way off Johnson County - or are a Wiley descendant - or have no connection at all, I think you'll want to read Jennie's story; it'll make you thankful that we didn't live in the 1770's- 1780's in the wilderness of Kentucky.
