When searching for an illusive ancestor who seemingly doesn't like to see his name in print ... researchers will go to the most obscure places to find them. I have often told the story of attempting to find a fellow here in Barren Co in the very early days of the county - his child married here, but past that - nothing. It was not until years later that I stumbled upon some old minute books of the Circuit Court and found him ... he had been fined 3 cents for swearing 3 oaths in the earshot of the justices. And I am always curious as to how our ancestors lived; little trivia about them that made them more real. In so doing, I have located the 1849 and 1850 "Jack and Stud" registrations - with a few tavern licenses thrown in - which lists the: name of the owner, the name of the animal and type, the fee paid. I ran a series on these for Warren Co in the past. So for a while, as a little extra for Friday's (or when I have a spare moment), I'm going to list these and I hope it might help some of you - or just be interesting! These are written on TINY scraps of paper and follow the same format - "I do certify that ____ this day paid me the sum of ____ the season price of his (Horse, jack, stud). Given under my hand this ____ of ____ 1849 (1850). /s/ (County Clerk and/or Deputy Clerk). John DAVIS, $2.00, horse "Shakespire", 19 Mar 1849, /s/ F BYBEE for William LYENS.
