I recently learned of google placing thousands of newspapers on line. It was discussed by Eastman in his daily column (get on his list, it's free and it's good). In brief, it's great, but partial. You can do a search for a name and it will give you an abstract of part of the article. To get the entire article, you have to pay $2-5 dollars from the paper it appeared in. Sometimes the abstract gives you a lot of info, something just a blurb. I did a quick search on Gorin - 12,000 some entries and I found a lawsuit in Jefferson Co in 1865, a divorce in the early 1900's, and several other great articles. But, I couldn't afford to order them all - I THINK once you submit payment on line, they'll open up the entire article for you online. I don't like the paying part but it's great to know if someone you're looking for is listed - then it's up to you! Now - another "goodie" Google also has thousands of books on line! Go to: http://books.google.com/ I had to work my way through this one. IF the book is out of copyright, the entire book is there and you can download it to your computer and/or print it off. If it's still under copyright, they will just show you the page(s) where your surname is listed, but many times that is enough. When you do your search (under the box where you type in the surname) you can have it search for ALL references to that name (or location or event likely), or just for the ones that are downloadable. I did my Gorin search and found about 7 hits that I could print off. I didn't need the whole book at this time, just the citation. Some of the books go back to the mid 1800's. Just for your info ...
