Mrs. Leann PALMORE, 88, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Tom WHITE, last Friday. Had been in failing health for some time, confined to bed one week. Her husband was T J (Jeff) PALMORE who died in 1913. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. WHITE and Mrs Nellie KEITH of Ocala FL. Sons are Dr Ewing and Reneau PALMORE of Glasgow and E C of Louisville. Member of Church of Christ since age 15, possessed a true Christian character. "She lived every day as if it were to be her last on earth" stated her nephew, Elder "Dick" PALMORE at the services. Burial was at Pleasant Hill. Miss Mable CLEMMONS, member of last year's graduating class married Mr. Benton BIRCH of Persimon, Sunday, Dec 29, 1940. They will make their home in Hoopston IL where he is farming. (Gamaliel). Since the birthday of Robert E LEE falls on Sunday this year, the 19th, the banks will observe it by being closed on Monday. {does anyone remember his birthday being a holiday - I don't!} Bridal shower given by Mrs. KIRKPATRICK in honor of Mrs Jenks HAIDEN BRITT nee Madaline SWANN, 11 Jan. Misses Sue Pearl CRABTREE, Irene and Katherine GRIDER received the gifts at the door with dainty opened parasols ... contest was won by Mrs B O JACKSON. Misses Nell RODDY and Mary Letta PINCKLEY and Louise WHITE presided at the punch bowl; grandfather and uncle of the bride were Rev J H SWANN and Prof Winburn SWAN. Heirloom of theirs presented and paper read explaining them read by Mrs Escoe WOOD. (they were 100 round "nappies" or glass sauces 100 years old). Explained that the heirloom had been haded down thru 6 generations, originating in NC in the Alfred GIBBS family who later settled a section of land of 640 actres at the Gibbs Cross Roads near Carthage TN. It is the famous "Button and Daisy" pattern in shades of heavenly blues, crystal, amber, canary and vaseline, made at an early glass house in Wheeling WV. Have been used 100 yrs with no nicks or breaks. Marriage law change cuts marriages to one. A new law requiring a medical examination of applicants for marriage licenses causing weddings to be rare - only one license in Monroe Co. Glasgow is the closest place for testing the blood of applicants so a local doctor has to take the blood and send it to Glasgow. The Glasgow lab only open on Tues and Thurs, so a long wait - this eliminating run away marriages. If couple violates the law, there is a $1,000 fine. If an applicant is refused a marriage license by reason of failure to obtain the blood test and certificate, he may file a protest with the County Judge. Trials will be held in chambres with all information, reports and evidence kept from the public. Appeals can be taken to the State Health Commissioner. Interesting articles!
