David P. Shaffner" <dshaff@bellsouth.net) has done all of us a major favor, and worked very hard in the process. Even if you are not researching African American roots, what he has compiled will show much information as to the slave owners, etc. His data came from a scan of the USCT files newly posted by ancestry.com. These names were located by entering "Barren" as a key word search. The one thing they all have in common is their enlistment papers indicate they were born in Barren County, Kentucky. Divid did not extract the names of military officials, although they are replete with the names of recruiting officers, some medical officers etc.A few explanations: HA = Heavy Artillery. LA = Light Artillery Mustering out place doesn't always indicate where the individual actually phycially left the service. All the Devalls Bluff musters probably were physically done somewhere in Kentucky. The documents were all sent to Devalls Bluff Arkansas for processing by the War Department.Where an application for compensation by the slave owner was filed, David tried to extract all the names, including the name of the notary, the two witnesses required for the proof of loyalty affidavitt, and the two witnesses required for proof of ownership. The compensation allowable was $ 300. None of the documents indicate the outcome of the submissions. There is much that can be written as to why these men enlisted and fought bravely for their country. I will begin with a post to follow of the information that David abstracted from these records of Barren Co. I will continue at a regular schedule, there is a lot of information for each soldier. I hope this will be of interest! Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
