You know I don't advertise books per se but I just returned from the SCKY Cultural Center and picked up a brand new book from Metcalfe Co that you might be interested in. Metcalfe was formed in 1860 with the biggest chunk coming from Barren Co and is right in the middle of the censuses. The Metcalfe Co Clerk donated to the Metcalfe Historical Society the tax records of James H Read for 1865. The society printed the forms, they are the actual photostatic copies of the original forms and Mr. Read had a legible handwriting! The pages aren't numbered but I would estimate over 100 pages, It is in alphabetical order by the first initual of the last name as was usual. A sample entry would be: Branstetter, M A, 654 acres, no slaves, 225 something that looks like horses (appears that way on every page!) a category called Plates, total 879, 1 tithe, $5.90 (due). He has columns for 1860 thru 1864 also and sometimes this shows the taxes paid for those years. It's a dream because so many of these are Barren Co names. In the back it has a list of 'Claims Sent to Frankfort Allowed at the June Term of the Metcalfe Circuit Court." The book is soft glue bound, color cover and sells for $18.00 including shipping and handling. You can order from the Metcalfe Co Historical Society, P O Box 910, Edmonton KY 42129. I think it's worth the money! Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
