COWHERD, James - VA S10482. Appeared 20 Aug 1832, age 74. Enlisted 4 Jan 1777 to serve under Capt. John GILLISON 10th VA Regt under command of Col Edward STEPHENS from Culpeper Co VA. Marched to New Castle DE, then to Bonbrook or Middle Brook NJ. Was then appt as orderly Sgt. Then sent to VA under Lt Thomas BARBEE. Returned to the army of Valley Forge and served as Sgt during winter of 1778. Aided in pursuing the enemy to Monmouth Meeting House; marched to White Plains, then to West Point. Took up winter quarters on the Raritan river. Returned to VA under Capt Alex PARKER in regt under command of Col Richard PARKER, same state. Went by boat to Charleston and landed at Musketoe Island, then went to Florady [Florida]. Was taken prisoner to St Augustine; remained there from 29 Oct 1779 to 25 Feb 1780. Released in Charleston; honorably discharged by Richard Parker.12 Aug 1832, Mercer Co - affadavit of Joshua BARBEE, he age 72. Swore that he and Cowherd had enlisted together 12 Mar 1777 - same list of locations. Elias BARBEE gave deposition at same time; said he had known soldier in VA in 1777. 20 Dec 1832 in Green Co the penioneer appeared again; said he had served a total of 3 yrs and 2 1/2 months. Had served as a private soldier for a tour of 5 months; and from 1 July 1777 until last of March of 1780 as Orderly Sgt. He was on the KY Roll of Pensions at $120 a year; cetificate issued 27 Mar 1833 and sent to John BARNET at Greensburg. CAMPBELL, Lawrence, VA, S30912. Appeared 17 Sept 1832 in Green Co. Enlisted in Amherst Co VA 1791; drafted for 6 months to serve in the militia under command of Capt George PENN in regiment of Col SCOTT. Marched near Charlottesville VA, stationed to guard the country stores for a 6-mo tour. Carter HUBBARD, Armstrong KERR and Col William BARNETT gave depositions - man of the best and highest character. Placed on the KY Roll of Pensions at $20 a month; certificate issued 12 Apr 1833 and sent to William L WILLIS of Greensburg. CHADOIN, Andrew & Sarah, VA, W2918. 2 Aug 1832 in Green Co; was 71 yrs old. Drafted 18 month tour in Buckingham Co VA in 1781 to serve in commands of Capt LOVELY & Capt CRAWFORD, regiment commanded by Col William DAVIS, brigade under command of Gen STEUBEN at Chesterfield Court House. Served 14 mos. Honorably discharged by Gen MUHLENBURG 26 Sept 1782. Had also served 2 tours - one of 3 months and one of 1 month under command of Capt Thomas HARRIS and Capt James HENRY/BENNY. Reached Williamsburg, then to Little ork; guarden Hessian prisoners at Albemarle Barracks. Francis CHADOIN gave deposition same time; brother to Andrew; Andrew had left home 2 different times to enter service. On 5 Mar 1846 in Green Co Sarah, wife of the soldier appeared, age 84. Said they married 20 or 21 Dec 1786 in Buckingham Co VA; husband died 17 Nov 1845. They moved in 1786 from Buckingham Co to Green Co. On 11 Feb 1846, Rolfe ELDRIDGE gave deposition as clerk of the court that the marriage bond of the couple was dated 20 Dec 1786 and signed by Andrew Chadoin and that John WHEELER (presumably surety, skg). Maiden name of the widow was Sarah MATTHEW. On 6 Apr 1846 in Green Co - David DRININ? gave deposition, he 60 yrs old, born Buckingham Co VA; well acquainted with the soldier and that the soldier and wife had moved to Green Co some 50 yrs ago. Also that Sarah was still a widow, their oldest child was 60 and that Andrew had received a pension. Sarah received $60 a year; certificate issued 23 June 1846 and sent to S A SPENCER at Greensburg. She also received $60 a month issued 19 Jan 1849, sent to same. Her husband was on the KY Rolls of Pension at $60 a yrs, issued 9 Apr 1833 and sent to William T WILLIS of Greensburg.
