    3. CARLILE, James P, VA, S30320. Appeared in Green Co 6 Sep 1833, age 72. Swore that he entered service the 1st time as a private in 1777, Augusta Co VA. Had also volunteered to service in the militia under command of Gen McINTOSH; employed to drive beef cattle under SHACKELFORD (Bullockmaster to the Ohio River below Pittsburg). He assisted in erecting Ft McIntosh and building Fr.Lawrnce on the Tuscaroway River. Honorably discharged at the end of his 6-mo duty. Volunteered again in Augusta Co 1778 in company commanded commanded by Cap Andrew LAWRIDGE. Marched against the Indians to Warm Springs, then to Clover Lick near the Green Brier River - stationed there 3 months. Received no discharge. Again volunteered in 1779 in the same county; marched against the Indians to a branch of the Monongahela River; served 3 months, no written discharge. Moved to KY in 1780; volunteered there in 1782 and 1783 to serve under command of Capt VANTREECE in regiment commanded by Col COX the the brigade under command of Gen CLARK. Marched against the Indians to the Ohio River; aided there in building a block house; marched to the Miami River. Served 3 months on this tour, no written discharge. States he was born 8 Feb 1761 in Augusta Co; resided for 35 years now in Green Co; remembered Gen McINTOSH, COl BROADHEAD, Col CRAWFORD and others. John GREENWELL, James WHITE and Samuel WRIGHT deposed that they were acquainted with the pensioner and had been close neighbors for years. John HARDING, clergyman and Ignatius NEWTON also gave depositions. James P CARLISLE (spelled both ways) put on KY Roll of Pensions $20 per year 14 Nov 1833; pension sent to Aaron HARDING at Greensburg. COWHERD, Jonathan & Elizabeth, VA, W8619. 28 Mar 1845. Belfield HENRY appeared in Green Co and said he was well and favorably acquainted with the soldier and his wife for 50 years. Pensioner's wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Thomas KIRTLEY and they had lived together as man and wife in VA; then moved to KY; had no doubt they were legally married. Stated that the soldier, Jonathan, was a lunatic for many years before his death; Elizabeth had remained a widow and relic. On 29 Mar 1845 William HOBSON gave his deposition - had known the soldier for over 40 years in Green Co. Swore the same. Stated that Willis COWHERD who he was acquainted with, was 65 and the eldest son of the couple and Coleby COWHERD, age 40, the youngest son. On 15 Feb 1845 in Culpaper Co VA Fayette MAUZY gave deposition as Clerk. Swore that the marriage bond was dated 2 Apr 1777 and signed by Jonathan Cowherd and Thomas Kirtley; that Elizabeth's maiden name was Kirtley. They were married April 177; had moved to Green Co about 40 yrs ago. On 20 Nov 1833 Simeon Cowherd gave affadavit; said he was the son of the soldier and Elizabeth, produced an honorable discharge of his father's. James LASKY, JP, swore at the same time that he knew Jonathan before he became a lunatic and that Jonathan had served as a JP, a Quarter Session Judge and an Assistant Judge. On 28 Feb 1833 in Green Co, Simeon Cowherd gave deposition saying at that time that his father was 77 yrs old, born Culpeper Co VA; his father had served 1775 and 1778 for a tour of 12 months under Capt Abraham BUFORD in regiment under command of Capt Elijah KIRTLEY and under commands of Maj Robert POWELL and Maj Robert ROBUCK. Father was commissioned as a LT and a Capt. Gen James ALLEN gave deposition at the same time; had known the soldier for 30 yrs and heard Jonathan speak of his service. Samuel BRENTS and Andrew BARNETT said the same. 2 O ct 1832 in Scott Co KY, affadavit of A Buford given - swore to soldier's service. Elizabeth Cowherd placed on the Ky Roll of Pensions at $120 a year on 20 July 1844; pension sent to Aaron Harding. Jonathan had been placed on the rolls 7 Dec 1833. DE SPAIN, Peter D, VA, S 14559, Bounty Land Warrant 29229-160-55. Appeared 20 Aug 1832 in Green Co, age 69. 1st enlisted 1780 in company of Capt BENTLEY in VA under command of Col HAWS for 18-mo tour. Honorably discharged at Salisbury NC. He resided in Montgomery Co VA; served in the Battles of Camdem, Guiliford Court Hout, Seige of 96. Marched from Montgomery Court House to Chesterfield, Joined Gen GREEN at Cheraw Hills on the Pede River. On 22 Mar 1856, Green Co, William Perry DeSpain and William D SKAGGS deposed; the first a son and only minor heir of the soldier. Stated that Peter had received a pension; died 31 Mar 1850 and left no widow. William Perry DeSpain was born in Green Co 2 Aug 1837; was 19 when he applied for the bounty land due him. On 19 Mar 1856, William D SKAGGS made his deposition and was appointed legal guardian for William Perry DeSpain. Gen M JOHNSTON and Perry MONEY made deposition at the same time. Peter was placed on the Ky Roll of Pensions at $60 per year,certificate issued 1 Dec 1832 and sent to John BARNETT at Greensburg. To be continued next week with DICKEN - a long one!
