Born Frederick Co MD 13 Jan 1754; enlisted in Chatham or Randolph Co NC Dec 1780. Moved from Randolph Co to Sullivan Co 1796. From there to Washington Co TN abt 1799, then to Blount Co TN in 1806 and lived there 6 yrs. Moved to Cumb. Co in 1812 or 1812; died in Clinton Co Jan 1843. Had 2 brothers, James & Joshua. John Wright made affidavit in Clinton Co K 2 Jan 1843 and said his father, soldier Joseph Wright lived in Randolph Co NC he (John) and lived part of the time on the farm of his father, Joseph Wright. He recollects that Joseph was out in the minute or light-horse service. James & Joshua Wright were in the service. John lived with Joseph many years and learned a trade with him and has lived in Cumb. Co (now Clinton) 15-20 years. In 1851 the heirs were Isaac Wright (administrator), Abner Wright and Betsey WALLACE - they the only surviving children. ** BURKS, Isham & Elizabeth W9758. This is very long and eventually comes to Cumb Co. Soldier appeared 22 June 1829 in Boone Co MO, age 70 or 71. Enlistged for 18 months in 1779 or 1780 in VA in company of Capt Adam WALLACE in the regiment of Col Abraham BUFORD & Lt Col HAWS. Served until Col BUFORD's defeat at Hanging Rock SC. Returned to VA, attached to troops of Col William DAVIS; served until 2 days before the time for which he had enlisted had expired; discharged at Chesterfield Co VA. Presently owns one mare, one 3-yr old colt, one 2-year old colt, 2 cows, 1 calf, 1 sow, 21 pigs and shoats, 1 course dining table, 2 drawing knives, 2 augers, 9-10 plates, 2 dishes, 5 glass tumblers, 4 glass bottles, set of cups and saucers, 2 pitchers, 3 crocks, 3 water vessels, 1 churn, 2 pots and skillets, shovel & tongs, a flat iron, 8 knives & forks, a looking glass, sugar bowl, cream jug, 2 razors, strop and box, 1 big wheel, reel, pair of cards, pot rack, 2 pair hooks, 1 frow and wood file, 2 small hand files, padlock, claw hammer, Bible, a Testament, Wood's Dictionary on the Bible in 2 volumes, a debt of $500-600 owing from Thomas EMMERSON of Cumb Co who is insolvent. About 18 Mar 1818 he had 7 horses & mares, a good wagon & gear between $300-400 in bank bills, 5 feather beds & furniture and $1000 owed by Emmerson - all gone except 2 feather besds & some few articles of little value. He is a cooper and turning and chair making but from age & disease seldom able to work. His family includes wife Elizabeth, aged 65 or 66 on 14 Jan or Feb last (she is crippled in the right hand) and James Payne Burks (youngest child), age 21 last May and Nancy SEXTON his granddaughter who is hired fo rhim by his son-in-law. On 29 Aug 1829 in Boone Co Isham Jr declared that he has lived near Isham Sr for 15-16 years; lost 8 horses and several milk cows. He accompanied Charles Burks from AL 3 yrs ago last fall to Cumb. Co, the residence of Thomas Emmerson, in order to collect the money owed but didn't get a cent. He offered to take $250 for the judgement against Emmerson but couldn't even get that because Emmerson took the oath of insolvency. Isham Sr, on the same day (the soldier) stated that he left Burkesville in March 1818 or 1819 to moved to the Black Water without about 31 children and grandchildren. By the time they reached Franklin Co TN he had incurred considerable expense in traveling and had to stop for a season. He raised a crop but due to the high price of grain etc he had spent most of his money. When he left TN he had only $17 left; prices for corn & grain were much higher in TN and he incurred a considerable debt to keep his family from suffering. He sent his oldest son, Charles, to KY to get the money from Emmeson but couldn't get a cent. Charles bartered one bond to Peter SIMMERMAN for dry goods work $500 and 20 per cent on the goods. Since 1818 the soldier has lost by death 8 horses & mares and 6 milch cows. Had to sell his wagon & gear to John Burks and was to receive $100. But then John was murdered and estate was unable to pay the debt. Then he lost his wagon. 3 yrs ago in Nov he started from Jackson Co AL to Boone Co MO in a 2-horse stage with his son-in-laws George SEXTON and his wife. He brought all his property and 4 persons and they traveled 600-700 miles. His tender son-in-law and daughter have been supplying for him.On 31 Aug 1829 in Boone Co Paris ELLISON & Harvey ELLISON said they knew the soldier in Cumb Co for about 15 yres. On 13 Mar 1841 in Boone Co, John ROWLAND said that Isham married Elizabeth BUrks about 1778 and shortly after Isham was called into service. On 22 Apr 1841 in Washington DC Dr George SEXTON of Boone Co MO produced the family record in Isham's handwriting. Jane GILLILAND, d/o James & Elizabeth was born 12 Apr 1817. Sally GILLILAND, d/o James & Elizabeth born 27 Aug 1822. The children of Isham & Elizabeth shown: Isham, son of John & Sarah born 1759. Elizabeth ROWLAND now BURKS born 14 Jan 1764. Charles Burks, s/o J & E born 11 Oct 1780. Sally Burk born 15 July 1782. Lidia GILLILAND, d/o James & Elizabeth born 19 Mar 1808, died 17 June 1809. James Gilliland born 17 July 1774, died Sunday 22 Sept 1822. Elizabeth Gilliland died 10 Oct 1822. Robert Rowland Burks born 6 May 1798, died 20 Dec 1791. Nancy Burks born 23 July 1791. Isham Burks Jr born 8 Nov 1794. John Burks born 21 July 1797. William Burks born 28 Sept 1800. Mahala Burks born 3 Dec 1802. Wesley Burks born 27 May 1806. James Payne Burks born 29 May 1808. Grandchildren: Isham Burks FLETCHR born 3 June 1809. Wilson Lee Fletcher born 18 July 1811. Sally Fletcher born 11 or 18 Oct 1813 (both dates shown). John Burks was murdered byGeorge BEAULY 23 July 1822 and was buried 24 in the midst of weeping friends and Neighbors. Sarah SIMPSON mother of John Rowlan and Elizabeth Burks died 28 Jan 1829 about 15 minutes after twelve o'clock aged between 80 and Ninety year. Nancy MAHO, former Nancy SEXTON died Wed 18 Nov 1830 about midday aged 22 yrs, 2 months, 10 days. Deceased last night the 19 of Instant the youngest son of Rowland and Mahala FROST. Isham was placed on the Missouri Pension roll at $8 per month, certificate issued 12 Oct 1829. Elizabeth Burks, his widow (Isham died 22 Aug 1839) went on the rolls 21 Apr 1842. ** AMYX (AMICKS) Matthew S6501. Appeared 16 Dec 1826 in Cumb Co, Shown as a Sr, shown as AMICKS alias AMYX. Served in Co of Capt Henry PAULDING in the regt of Col Charles LYNCH; name placed on the VA pension roll. Moved from VA abt 8 yrs ago, lives now in Cumb. Co. Died 12 Mar 1832. He was a disabled by a wound received in his left arm. Pension was one-half disability at $2.50 per month, raised to $4 to month. His children were granted unclaimed payments on 6 Jan 1854. Next week, the pension applications switch over to Monroe Co for a time.
