DD: An abbreviation usually found in the margin of a grant - Deed Delivered Deed: Subsequent conveyance after initial patent is issued or after land is sold by one to another; filed with the County Clerk. Deputy Surveyor: Assistant county surveyor; he could conduct the field survey. Director of Survey: See "housekeeper". Distd cc: Abbreviation use in a survey description. Meant disinterested chain carriers. Can also be shown as "distd cm" which is an abbreviation for "disinterested chairmen." In other words, these chain carriers could not have a connection to the individual having the land surveyed. Draw: A land basin that water drains into or through. DSMC: An abbreviation in the survey description. Meant Deputy Surveyor (Mercer) County. The third initial abbreviates the county in which the land is located. Thus in Barren Co, it would read DSBC. Entry: The 2nd step in land patenting. Filing in county surveyor's entry that reserves the land until the field survey can be made. Exchange Warrant: This replaces a lost or mislaid warrant. It may also be issued to divide a larger warrant into smaller denominations. For example: A 10,000 acre treasury warrant may be "exchanged" for ten 1,000 acre treasury warrants. Ex'd: Executed. Exmd & Recd: Examined and recorded. Federal Public Domain: Any state that is not a state-land state. Land appropriations overseen by the Federal Bureau of Land Management. First-rate land: This was for tax purposes; had the highest appraisal rate; similar to lands in the Bluegrass area. Also indicated the richest land which was normally nearest a waterway. French & Indian War Warrant: Issued as payment for military service in the French & Indian War. Does not convey title. May be assigned or combined with other warrants to patent land. Authorized patents in the Virginia & Old Kentucky Patent Series. Grant: The 4th step in land patenting. The document issued by the Governor conveying title to previously unappropriated land. Grantee: Individual or entity acquiring land title. In a deed, this is the receiver of the land from the grantor. Grantor: The entity or person conveying title in land patenting. In patenting the grantor is the either the Commonwealth of Virginia or Kentucky. In deeds, it is the owner of the land who is selling to the grantee. Gt Isd: Abbreviation on found on the back of a survey - grant issued. Gully: a narrow ravine, hollow work in the earth by a current of water. Gut: a narrow passage or gully as of a stream or path.
