Omer James Simmons MIA WWII from Glasgow, Barrren, KY Enlisted in Army December 30, 1941 Reported missing January 3, 1943 BARREN COUNTIES WAR DEAD - BARREN CONTY LOST 73 GALLANT MEN IN WW II “SIMMONS, Omer James, 23, Pfc., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harrison Simmons, Glasgow, KY, Rte 6, reported missing January 3, 1943 in New Guinea while retreating from the Japanese in the Buna, New Guinea campaign which made it necessary to swim a river. He is thought to have suffered a heart attack which caused him to drown. He was given up as dead May 1, 1944. Simmons was a member of Co. G., 126th Infantry of the 32nd Division.” I have the wartime letters and artifacts of Uncle Omer. One suggests he was buried. Because of that I have been working with the National MIA/POW office to see if his remains are recoverable. So far they have not been found. …Barbara Simmons Reeves
