As you know, Warren County is the parent county of Barren, thus the grandparent of counties which were formed from Barren Co. Many of Barren's early citizens thus were originally found in the records of Warren Co. The Circuit Court Order Book 1 of Warren County covers the time frame of 1797 thru 1801; Barren Co was formed in 1798. For a time, I'm going to take a look at this order book - which was the record of the transactions of the Circuit Court. 6 June 1797: Held at the house of Robert MOORE with Burwell JACKSON, John SHANNON and John HALL, Esquires, present. Havilah CRUMP produced a license from the Judges of the Court of Appeals allowing him to practice as an attorney. He took the oaths required. A jury consisting of John CURD (foreman), John COX, Gladin GORIN, William MEANS, William JONES, Henry GORIN, Freeman JONES, David BOYLES, Joseph SNODGRASS, William ALLISON, Alexander STUART, William ANDERSON, Vincent ANDERSON, John MILLER, Benjamin HAMPTON, John COOK and Frederick BARNS were sworn in - retired - returned and made the following presentments: On the recommendation of William CHAPLINE, Daniel CURD was sworn in as his deputy. Thomas STUART made motion allowing him to act as an Attorney at LAW in this court; took oaths. A deed from CROGHAN to AMOS & STEELE proven by the testimony of John BROOKS and Charles AMOS, certified. ROBERT COLEMAN allowed to practice law in the Court, took oaths. A case of James STUART vs William McFADIN dismissed; defendant came into court and said he did not believe the plaintiff to be a thief but instead an honest man. Defendant paid $10 for the cost of the case. Adjorned. Next week the Sept. 1797 session.
