I normally don't post on Friday's, but I recently found this and thought it might be of interest to some of our readers. I have been working with the applications for pension for Confederate soldiers after the Civil War. As with the Union soldiers, many of our young men came home ill, broken in body and in poor financial shapes. Their families back home were suffering the same; their cattle might have been taken to feed the troops, horses taken for the war effort and food and money taken. It was a time of great hardship for many. Ambrose S. Clayton of Barren County applied for a pension when it was offered. Many pages of documents were filled in with information that would help descendants, many years later, get a picture of his life, both in and out of service. In his application for pension, Ambrose stated that he lived in Glasgow, Barren County and served from there in the war. He was in Company E, Sixth Infantry, The Orphan Brigade, Breckinridge's Division, Army of Tennessee, C.S.A. He had enlisted on Nov 20, 1876, Jo Lewis Regt, 6th KY. Company officers he listed included Col. Jos. H. Lewis, Lt. Col Martin H. Cofer, Major T. H Hayes. When asked if he had ever been in prison he said yes, in Glasgow, for one week. He was not paroled. He had taken the oath of allegiance to the United States Government in order to be discharged. He was now not employed because of his disabilities caused by the war. His estate was about $1500. He was asked what estate his wife had - none, she was an invalid. His income for the past year was about $100. He was asked if he used intoxicants and he replied "None at all." He had been a resident of KY all his life. His attorney as J. A. Murray of Glasgow. He signed the application and it was witnessed by Wm. Steenbergen and Dr. C. Grinstead. Statements were taken of both with Dr. Grinstead stating some of Clayton's injuries. Steenbergen wrote of Clayton's service as he knew it. Next week - the report of the Pension Examiner's office in Frankfort and more.
