I think Fleming C. Bowles was a son of Elijah and Emaline (Carder) Bowles, and a grandson of Hezekiah Bowles. Fleming apparently married again, at least according to the 1900 census record. 1900 Federal Census: Kentucky, Monroe County household 253/254 Bowls, Flem C. - head, W M 33, born Sep 1866 in KY, md 0 years, parents born KY, farmer Bowls, Sarah B. - wife, W F 34, born Feb 1866 in KY, no children, parents born KY Bowls, Earney - son, W M 6, born Sep 1893 in KY On Wed, Sep 3, 2014 at 8:58 AM, Sandi Gorin via < south-central-kentucky@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Taken from Volume 5 of same of my publications. > > Note: the wording is very pointed in places and I will not include all. > > Plaintiff: F(lem) C. Flem Bowles and Sarah Smith married December 3, 1891, by J. S. Sewell, M.G., at the Courthouse, Monroe County, Kentucky; witnesses were Ben Franklin and Dr. F. Duncan. Source: Marriages, Monroe County, Kentucky, Marcella P. Headrick, p. 12. Sarah Smith's full name was Sarah Lou Ann Smith, one of 10 children of a Methodist minister, Andrew Jackson "Uncle Jack" SMITH (30 Dec 1829, Clinton Co., KY - 22 June 1910, Glover's Creek, Old Eighty-Eight, Barren Co., KY) and his wife Elizabeth (MOULDER) SMITH (27 July 1834, Warren Co., TN - 20 December 1920, Barren Co., KY); and she was affectionately called "Aunt Lou". Reverend Andrew "Uncle Jack" and Elizabeth (Moulder) Smith are buried in Payne Cemetery. Elizabeth (MOULDER) SMITH was a daughter of Samuel MOULDER and Nancy (LUSTER) MOULDER. Andrew Jackson (A. J. or "Uncle Jack) SMITH was a son of Robert SMITH and Virginia Jane "Jenny" (LUSTER) SMITH, of Clinton Co., KY. Jenny's Nob in Clinton County, KY is named in her honor, as her family lived near its base. My great-grandparents were Joseph David "Joe D." WALKER and his wife Cordelia "Cordie" Kittybird (SMITH) WALKER (daughter of Andrew J. SMITH and Elizabeth MOULDER). Joseph David WALKER was a son of Samuel Houston WALKER and Martha Jane EMBERTON, members of Mt. Gilead Church, Monroe Co., KY. My Walker ancestors were (and are) musicians ("The Walker Family"), in the area called Nobob, KY. My Smith ancestors, among the earliest members of Clear Fork Baptist Church, descend from George SMITH (Schmidt) and Rebecca (BOWEN) SMITH of Wayne / Clinton Counties, Kentucky – very early settlers there. The minister "Raccoon" John Smith is from this lineage. Sarah "Lou" (Smith) Bowles married again: Thomas William "Will" Dillon. They lived for a time in Clay Co., Missouri, then returned to the Temple Hill area, Barren Co., KY. Thomas William "Will" Dillon died April 8, 1930; and Sarah Lou Ann (Smith) Bowles Dillon died January 17, 1955. Fleming "Flem" C. Bowles and Sarah Lou Ann (Smith) Bowles had only one child, then divorced. Flem probably subsequently married Sarah Bell Carter (12 Feb 1866 - 29 Nov 1925), who is buried beside him in the Carter Cemetery, Monroe County, Kentucky. Obituary of father of Sarah Lou Ann "Aunt Lou" (SMITH) BOWLES DILLON: “Rev. A. J. Smith, an aged Methodist minister, died at the home of his son-in-law at Eighty-Eight, a few days ago. He was eighty years old, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow and six children, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Rilda Sabens, Miss Lou Smith, and Messrs. Sam and Millard Smith – the two last living in Glasgow – and Mr. Bunyon Smith, of Illinois. The remains were interred in the Payne burying ground in the edge of Monroe County.” Source: Glasgow Times, July 7, 1910. In the above obituary, Rev. Smith's son-in-law was Joseph David Walker (m. Cordelia Kittybird "Cordie" Smith), my great-grandparents. I have not identified the Methodist Church, with which my great-great grandfather Andrew Jackson Smith was affiliated. If anyone has information, I would be grateful. He was born in Clinton Co., KY; and sometime during the Civil War, they escaped the atrocities of "Champ" Ferguson and others, by removing first to Tompkinsville, Monroe Co., KY (before 1870), then afterwards to Barren Co., KY. I've wondered if Andrew J. Smith's Methodist Church affiliation was first with a church in Tompkinsville? I also would appreciate a more full accounting of the trials and tribulations of the failed marriage of Flem and Sarah "Aunt Lou" (Smith) Bowles. I imagine it's quite salacious and sexist, given the context of their timeframe. "Lou" was the sister of my great-grandmother Cordelia Kittybird "Cordie" (Smith) Walker.
