Revolutionary War Warrant: issued as payment for military service. Does not convey title. May be assigned or combined with other warrants to obtain a land patent. Authorized patents in the Virginia, Old Kentucky & West of Tennessee River Military Patents Series. Rod: surveying measurement. One rod equals 16.5 feet or 25 links. Also called pole. Sct or SS: Usually written by the county name. This is an abbreviation for the Latin word "scillicet" meaning "in particular" or "namely"; included to the right of the venue. Second-rate land: For tax purposes - the second highest appraisal rate; usually on gently rolling hillsides. Secretary of State: Overseer of KY's land patents from 1934 to the present. Section: 640 acres or one square mile. Senior Patent: A patent that may pre-date later patents on the same property. Shilling: Colonial American coin, varying in value from 12 to 16 cents; monetary unit of the United Kingdom equal to 5 (new) pennies of 1/20th of a pound. Symbol: / SMC: An abbreviation in a survey description. Identifies the name of the county surveyor; middle abbreviation matches the name of the county. In this example it could be Surveyor Madison County. In Barren Co it would be SBC - in Hart Co it would be SHC. South of Green River Patent Series: Land patent series developed for the former military district in southwestern KY. Warrant recipients met age & residency requirements.
