As an explanation. Many years ago the WPA employed people to transcribe various county records. I am working from their transcription as the original records are no longer available. I am quite sure that they had difficulty in reading the handwriting and many of the spellings of names were as they "saw" them. 7 June 1798. Same Justices. MAGEBY vs SMITH & others - case dismissed. New Jury: John CURD, Maurice KAIN, Robert HERIL (HERRALD), Dennis DUNHAM, Will MARRS, James CAMPBELL, John COOK, Isaac MILLER, Aaron LEWIS, Will SMITH, Jeb LOYD & Charles LOYD. Verdict for 1 shilling in damages. Robt KING to pay John ANDERSON & Solomon RUBY for 3 days as his witnesses and Henry JONES for 2 days. Adjourned. Called Court 11 June 1798 to examine John LUPES (likely LEEPER) charged with passing counterfeit money. Burwell JACKSON & John SHANNON, Justices. Defendant appeared on his own recogtnizance. Prisoner led to the bar in the custody of the Sheriff. It was demanded of him whether he is guilty of the charge. He says he is in no wise guilty of the charge. Sundry witnesses were heard in behalf of the Commonwealth and the prisoner in his defense. Verdict: Prisoner be discharged. Adjourned, Burwell Jackson signed. To be continued.
