    3. Plaintiff: C. E. England Defendant: James G & T L England Date: 24 Apr 1891 File No. 153 Depositions continued. Copass deposition continued. Had heard defendant threaten to thrash the plaintiff and wear her out; that he would whip her if she didn't give up sanctification. Others present included Chrinteener (sic) England, Andrew England, Eller England and Sarah J. England. In January or February he threw all the beds out. He had heard him talk short to her on the evening she started to church. When asked how many times Copass had seen or heard the defendant speak so - didn't remember. Extended questioning followed re the mortgage on the cow and calves. The next witness was Thompson PEDEN. Knew both parties; 69 years old, resides Monroe Co. Said he knew they had been married for some time; she is living now at her brother's home in Monroe Co; he is also in Monroe Co - married maybe 18-19 years. Separated about March of Feb 1891. When asked to describe any ill treatment: At Bethlehem some time about the time a meeting was being held, he had gone out to the gate where both parties were standing. They invited Peden to go home with them. Peden told her that I thought he would and that he had heard that she had gone on to higher ground in the way of Christianity. Defendant said he had no use for this sanctification and would cut his throat before he would live with it. Defendant turned away and left her standing there and headed towards their home. The meeting was in Aug or Sept 1890. Defendant was very angry. Witness stated that defendant is a stout, hale and healthy man and plaintiff is now a very feeble woman and has been for the part year or more. Peden was cross examined and stated that he had been to their house many times. They always had plenty to eat; he was a good worker. They had lived together for about 6 months after the Bethlehem meeting. Depositions continued on 23 June 1891 with B. H. Page questioned. Age 31 years, resides Monroe Co, knows the parties. Same general line of questioning and answers. Knew defendant had mortgaged his things to Tobe England for $40. Mentioned the TREVITT boys - might be related to the wife. Listed neighbors who knew it was pretty bad: Wm. CHISM, John SMITH, Tol THOMAS & W L MARRS. To be continued next week with deposition of John D. SMITH.
