Yesterday, I was contacted by a historian at a museum in Iowa concerning Merle Leroy Smith, grandson of Harmon T. & Sarah Elizabeth Carder Smith of Monroe County. Merle died in Stalag 9-B in Berga Concentration Camp, where he, along with 72 other Amercan POWs, was worked and starved to death in inhumane conditions.
